While at CeBIT 2007 I took a tour around the Samsung booth. They had a lot going on, and probably the most traffic of any booth on the floor. They did not dissapoint, many new products and updated existing products were to be found.

Samsung Q1 "Ultra"

First of all, I have to question why Samsung didn't just call the next generation UMPC Q1 the Q2. Instead, it's the "Ultra Q1", so does that make it an Ultra, Ultra Mobile PC? Whatever the case, Samsung chose CeBIT 2007 to show off the updated Q1 UMPC that was launched at this very same show last year. The Q2 has a nicely updated design with a split keyboard approach, fingerprint swipe for security, and integrated HSPDA or WiBro for internet connectivity from anywhere (if you pay for the necessary monthly subscription from a provider).

The Q1 specs are as follows

• Intel Core 2 Duo ultra low voltage processor (800MHz)
• 7-inch touchscreen display 1024 x 600 WSVGA display
• 1GB of RAM
• 60GB Hard Drive
• Bluetooth, WiFi, HSPDA/WiBro

The new form factor is cool, I really like the thumb pointing stick for moving the cursor, but it's still too big and clumsy feeling to use. Nice idea though, good that they're taking different design approaches and being creative.

Samsung Q45

Samsung unveiled the ultraportable Sensa Q45 at CeBIT. It comes with Vista Premium, Core 2 Duo processor, built-in camera, integrated HSPDA/WiBro and the latest Intel 965 chipset. It will also come with some flavor of the upcoming NVidia 8000 series graphics cards.

Samsung R20

The 14.1" screen Samsung R20 was leaked in the news last week, but officially it was released this week at CeBIT. The is all black in color with some pretty weird swirls at the top of the keyboard. It's made mostly of plastic, but from a distance you can't tell. Specs wise it has a Core 2 Duo processor, Windows Vista Premium, BlueTooth, Wi-Fi and uses the ATI XPress 1250 for graphics. It's apparently going to be a budget play.

Samsung R70

The 15.4" Samsung R70 is the new big boy on the block for this company. It's going to carry the highest end 8000 series graphics card from NVidia (the 8800), Intel Core 2 Duo processor, HDMI output, integrated camera, Windows Vista Premium and built-in DVB-T (digital video broadcasting -- works in Korea only).

Too bad this machine will never sell in North America, maybe Korea and Europe will enjoy it though.

Samsung M55 gets Blu-Ray

Worth a mention is the pretty M55 laptop from Samsung. It now has Blu-Ray as an option.

Samsung G15

I couldn't figure out why the Samsung G15 was so weird looking relative to the other laptops in the Samsung stable. I realized that it's the only notebook they had on display that was not widescreen, which made the screen appear really tall in comparison. Odd how the times change and widescreen was novel a few years ago. Anyway, the specs on this laptop aren't too exciting: 15.4", Core 2 Duo, ATI Xpress 1250, SXGA resolution (which is nice), and Vista Premium.

wow, 8000 CPU on a 15.4"........I wonder how it's going to handle with the cooling on the R70. Hehe, the right crtl key is loose on the R20 :p, unless it's meant to be that way

I really like the R20, loose Ctrl key and all. Pity Samsung notebooks are not widely available in the US.

Nice observation, I missed that even in person, there goes my credibility out the window.

I ensure you it is not supposed to be diagonally oriented. Points off on build quality and presentation already I guess.

The Samsung R20 has already been on sale in UK for a couple of weeks. There is more about that model in the Samsung forum.

The Q45 has many similarities to the existing Q35 and appears to keep the PCMCIA slot but acquires a webcam.
