Awesome article! +1

Yay! Folding @ Home is such a great project.
I've been folding since 2008 I think. For another team, but the real point is to do it to help the research on the various diseases protein misfolidng causes (and it's lots of the big ones).
Right now I Fold 24/7 on a Dell desktop, and an Asus G74.
The Dell has:
2.8GHz Core 2 x2
96 core Geforce GPU
The Asus G74 has:
2GHz Sandy Bridge x4 (which overclocks itself constantly to 2.5GHz...every time I've looked since I set it up to do this last Thursday it's always been 2.5GHz)
192 core Nvidia GPU.
I fold 24/7 on both the CPUs and GPUs, the SMP client for the CPUs, the GPU 3 client for the GPUs
My points per day have like tripled since I just added my Asus G74 to the desktop! Not sure if it can hold out like this forever, since it's a notebook, but so far it seems to be shrugging off the workload like it's nothing... -
Been folding as well on my Toshiba X305-Q708 for well over a year, on my own team. The QX9300 runs the SMP client well, while I have one of the graphics cards running the CUDA client. Tried the same on a Toshiba X775 notebook more recently and got even better PPD.
I would love to grab a quad-SLI rig on a 2011 mobo and set up a dedicated folding rig to run 24/7, but like always, money gets in the way.
Those lucky enough to have a folding farm - I envy you! -
If I had more money, I've been drooling over buying an HP desktop with either a 4 module Bulldozer, or 4 core Sandy Bridge, plus a Geforce GTX 580, and letting that run the SMP and GPU clients 24/7 :-D
Adding my Asus G74 24/7 has shot my points from like 5000-7000 up to like 19000-25000 per day. I can't imagine how much my points would jump with a desktop like that!
Actually I DO have a 2003 desktop I could use...but it's AGP...if I could get a GPU for it that would Fold, but I'm not sure anything exists. All it can run is the single threaded regular CPU client. -
This whole thing really confuses me still even after reading about it on the website. Also what do points do?

Awesome! We're top of the top in F@H lol.
Currently only fold on my sole computer, the W520 (specs in sig). Surprising that I'm in the top 10 within the team, considering that most of guys above have multiple folding rigs and whatnot.
-
Will it slow down my computer much?

I typically surf the web, use Office, play Minecraft, watch Youtube, and/or code on MATLAB while folding, and I've almost never noticed any hiccups. When I do, they're for a split second. -
So basically my laptop will be pushed hard whether I'm using it or not? Will that wear out my cpu/gpu?

Okay cool. I'll set it up when I get a chance

Be sure to let it run overnight as well as whenever it's at your desk. That's what I've done with my laptop since joining in December, even with a 3-week hiatus due to Winter Break. -
I installed it but every time I try to add a gpu, it just disappears and I'm left with the cpu. What am I doing wrong?

What are you trying to do?
With a dual or quad core CPU, you'd want to run the SMP client, not the normal one, and you'd want to run the GPU3 client on your GPU (well, someone correct me if I'm wrong about which GPU one to use on an AMD GPU).
I use the command line versions of both, and could hopefully give you ideas if you let me know what's going on.
Heehee, today I have my Playstation 3 running Folding @ Home too, in addition to my G74 and my Dell desktop :-D -
Have you tried using the v7 Beta client? I run that and it detects both the CPu and GPU, running them well.
-
What's the v7 client? I just use the newest command line SMP client for my CPU, and the newest GPU3 client.
It looks like for AMD GPUs you have to use the GPU2 client though? I actually got one of the GPU clients to run on a c50 "APU", though unfortunately it only got to 92% (running 24/7) before the project's deadline, so I gave that up.

I'm already using the beta program. And I had it set to uniprocessor, so I'll change it to smp.
So what do I have to do to get my gpu recognized? I'm still sort of confused.

The OP in this thread might be of some help for the both of you. If you still can't get the AMD GPUs to run, you could possible ask DR650SE about the issue due to his similar laptop setup. -
I *THINK* for your AMD GPU, you'd grab that GPU2 client from that page, 6.23 right now.
I personally use the command line versions of both-I've never actually run the graphical version. But presumably you could grab the GPU2 version in either graphical, command line formats, whichever you prefer. -
So does that mean I can't use the beta?
And since I've started, the NBR team has jumped in ranking from 833 to 822. Is that because of me or is our team so awesome that we just have a consistent climb?

I don't know about that beta, where people are getting it, or what, but your GPU should definetly be able to run the GPU2 client listed on that page. I even got my c50's GPU portion to run it fine (it just wasn't fast enough because it's only 80 cores clocked at like 277Mhz or something like that)
-
All the download links are in the OP of the folding@home thread (not this thread).
So gpu3 won't even work?

GPU3 MIGHT work. I can't remember which one I ended up using on my AMD hardware, and it might have actually been the GPU3 client. At least from the text though on the download page it acts like GPU3 is for Nvidia, GPU2 is for AMD. I think it got updated to support Nvidia's newer architecture. I imagine they'll probably have a new version for AMD's new "GPU Next" design too, though I don't know when that'll hit notebooks.
-
This is making me so aggravated!!!! The Beta ran fine, but I downloaded and installed 6.23 and it runs some set up where I enter all my info (name, team, password), I press enter, and it just opens the same window with all blank fields and nothing happens!!

Just a quick update. The NotebookReview Forums Folding@home team is now ranked 480th in the world. That's a jump of 500 places in just a month and a half. It's never to late to lend your support!
-
Just another quick update. The NBR F@h team has moved into the top 200 teams worldwide for F@h. If you've thought about joining the team, I encourage you to stop by our thread and ask questions. We've made it into the top 200 teams using just notebooks! If we can get somone desktops folding, we could definately continue climbing the ranks!
If you want to stop by our thread for some questions, just click the stats banner in my sig.
Also we are getting ready to start organizing a Notebook Review Foldathon. I am currently working on the details but would love to have you all join the team for support!
