The fact they made the Studio 17 thinner either means they've got a better cooling system or the Core i7 does not run as hot as I would have assumed. Performance in terms of benchmarks and heat will be interesting for these machines as those are always the unknown factors with a new processor inside an existing machine.

 

I'm surprised at how affordable they are. I was expecting price points starting at $1500-$2000.

 

Looks like Dell's last holdout on the 16:10 display aspect ratio, the Studio 17, has finally succumbed to the 16:9 HD aspect ratio craze. Seriously, this has got to stop.

Otherwise, these notebooks look pretty sweet!

 

Almost all the major suppliers of screens have switched to 16:9, so ODMs really have no choice but to take that aspect ratio...

 

I wonder when the Latitudes get the i7 treatment?

 

I must say I'm slightly surprised that the M17x isn't getting the i7 treatment yet.

Kudos to Dell for launching them and making them available that fast. But HP did announce earlier, and Toshiba has the X500 ready IIRC.

Wow that is a pretty solid deal then. If quad cores are going for that much, makes you wonder how much the dual core is going for.

Bah. Dell is dropping the lowest end chip in. You would think with the 17"er that has the chassis to handle the higher scale CPU that it would offer up to the 2Ghz model that would scale to 3.2Ghz.

I'm going to be doing a fair amount of ripping on whatever quad core system I get so realistically I want that 920XM. I know the chip is 4 figures, but still. gimme

And as for Alienware....ugh. Ugliest mobile on the market. I don't need a beauty queen, however the design looks gimmicky. *sighs*

 

You heard wrong. The only model that is suffering from that is the 1330 series.

The XPS M1330 had heat issues. The SXPS 13/16 get warm-but by no means is the integrity of the machine compromised as it was with the M1330.

I can't think of any other Dell notebooks out there that have notoriously poor cooling. The Studio lines have received good feedback, and the Alienwares are both pretty solid.

On the contrary, brands like Asus have had quite a few more problems with cooling their notebooks than Dell. But of course, Asus pushes the limit when it comes to putting high end performance in smaller/cheaper form factors, so that is to be expected somewhat.

 

Cant wait to see this cpu in a 14in device like the Studio 14z.

Its not up yet I don't think. Give it time... the M15x customization link takes you to the M17x customization link too. Hope some poor sap doesn't think hes getting a 15 incher with dual GTX 280's...

 

So the core i7s are cheaper than I expected. Studio 17 looks awesome, would be a perfect desktop replacement. Now only if the HD5xxx series is out..

I'm so dissapointed with the new m15x. the m17x is awesome, it's the flagship of alienware. but to take an already Beautiful 15 inch rig, make it thicker, and give it the same look as the 17 inch model... please.. that's retarded. you get the m17x to have an impressive desktop replacement, and you'd get a 15 inch to have comfortable power with a more travel-friendly design. To make the m15x a smaller version is stupid. It's not travel friendly anymore, just an attempt an impressive display.. but why not just get the 17x for that? fail dell.

But as for the new i7 line... oh my gosh am I excited. I have to say that i think I'm going to be more attracted to the HP lineup.. they have pretty much read my mind, I've wanted a PC with gaming specs, and APPLE build and design, and HP's offering that... makes me very happy. bums me out that I recently bought an HDX 16T. but no worries, i love my laptop

 

A couple of the recent Toshiba notebooks have a 4650. That includes the A500. I wouldn't be surprised if they are ready to update with the I7 as well especially with the fact that they have shown off there new X500.

Quickpath InterConnect is this.

Direct Media Interface is point-to-point interconnection between an Intel northbridge and an Intel southbridge on a computer motherboard. In addition, for low-end families in the Intel Nehalem (microarchitecture), Intel will implement DMI directly in the processor, eliminating the need for a Northbridge chipset on motherboards that use these processors (from Wiki).

 

I ate the entire story. Now I want an i7!

 

Nice systems, especially with the optional 256GB SSD for $400 extra. Still a bit steep but SSDs are getting almost affordable and with large enough data. There are 2 reasons I'll likely wait, though:

* Will get a Latitude with Win7 native, probably with SP1
* 45 watts TDP with 9 cell batteries is not going to cut it for me, but the upcoming 25-35 Watts i7 combined with a larger battery... then will be perfect combo of performance, battery life and battle tested Win7

 

Nice to see the DDR3 in the new laptops. Good performance and nice specifications but I don't like the design at all.

 

I think this might be a glitch in the Studio XPS 16 configuration.



I guess that brand spanking new core i7 can't handle BR playback, not even with the help of a HD 4670.

TDP is a poor indicator of battery life. Most of the time on battery, you will never stress the CPU. The quad core i7s can consume less power at idle than current C2Ds due to shutting down unused cores and aggressive SpeedStep. While we have yet to see idle power consumption of the dual core i7s, I doubt it will be much lower from comparing the current generation C2Ds and C2Qs idle power consumption difference being fairly small.

 

I agree. TDP is giving the max number, or the load number of consumption of the CPU.
But when idle, the CPU consumes much less, that is the case of the T and P series when undervolted, they consume practically the same.

An i7 not running at full speed should consume less than any C2 since it can shut down unused cores.

 

Quick Path Interconnect is the replacement for FSB on the i7.

 

On Bloomfield, yes. On Lynnfield and Clarksfield, they use DMI instead.
