Dell today unveiled a redesigned version of its Vostro Small Business laptop line-up. The new Vostros range in size from 13.3" - 17" screens and have a new thinner and lighter form factor.
Dell Vostro 1310 (view large image)The new Vostro notebooks are as follows:
- Dell Vostro 1310 - 13.3" Intel Core 2 Duo or Celeron powered portable notebook starting at $749
- Dell Vostro 1510 - 15.4" Intel Core 2 Duo or Celeron powered mainstream notebook starting at $599
- Dell Vostro 1710 - 17" Intel Core 2 Duo or Celeron powered desktop replacement notebook
The new Vostro 1310 and 1510 will be available today in Europe, theMiddle East and Africa while North America and South America will see availability on May 1st and Asia on May 5th. Later in May the Vostro 1710 will become available world wide.
(view large image)Dell will continue to offer the attractive 30-day worry-free return policy and no loadedtrialware options, both important factors to business buyers that want comfort and no hassle purchasing.
The new design of the Vostro lineup is completely different to that of the Inspiron lineup. Previously Vostro notebooks shared a common chassis with the Inspiron consumer notebooks, but Dell collected feedback from its small business customers to tailor the design to their needs andbuild these new machines from the ground up.
The new Vostro design features a thinner and lighter form factor, but sacrifices some ruggedness by using thinner materials to accomplish this. The new Vostros are also more square and less rounded than before. A glossy finish lid with a metal flake affect is attractive, but will mean that a microfiber cloth is a necessary accessory to remove fingerprints from the lid before thatpowerpoint presentation gets underway. Some features from the XPS lineup such as touch sensitive button controls with backlit blue LED lighting and a slot loading optical drive have also made it into the newVostro lineup.

great news!what video card will they offer with 1510 and 1710?
-
I like their new designs. Reminds me of the HP Compaq mobile workstations.
-
Website says that the 1510 will only be offered with either the X3100 or an Geforce 256mb 8400m GS.
-
um yeah, I was also informed about this by Dell reprsentative today, just after I complained the inavailability of Vostro 1500 which made me purchased BenQ S41 instead.
Anyway, as long as they are equipped with good dedicated graphic card and affordable, I think I would buy this one later. -
How long do you think until they replace the current 1500 and 1400s down here in New Zealand? And will they have the same options for dedicated graphics (8600M GT)?

I assume the 1400 is still there because Dell doesn't have a new 14" Vostro yet, and the 1400 has been pretty successful for them. The 1000 is just dirt cheap so it makes sense to keep that option around for as long as possible. -
still really square and looks heavy but the design aesthetics looks alright
xps really has an awesome design -
The design reminds me of Toshiba's Tecra range.

I like the interior, but the lid is ruining it. I'd prefer the whole thing look like a cheap black plastic box without any shinies.
If you use it extensively in a working environment, the glossy surface is going to be scratched, ladden with finger prints and ugly looking in no time.
Not as cheap as you'd expect Vostro to be, as well. Hmm. Way too close to the price of D430. -
Man I'm having such a geekgasm right now!!! This new Vostro line is really sick it totally beats the HP business line sideways!
I'd been wanting to get a 1500 but never liked its bulky design and had been waiting for Dell to churn out something new ever since. I'm glad the wait is worthwhile 'cos the 1510 is exactly what I wanted for a professional looking business laptop. -
Too bulky. Going to wait for the Latitude E's.
-
Is it just me or do the new ones look like ThinkPads... all it needs now is a red trackpoint...
-
-
This new design looks 10x better than the previous generations...
-
Hmm, im just wonderin, have they completely stopped making the old 'chunky' vostros now, as i am looking on the UK site (will be ordering a new laptop next week) and when i click on the 'new vostro' link, i see no 1510, 1310, just 1500's, 1300's etc.
-
The review of the 1310 wasn't so great. It said the plastic used felt a little thin and flimsy. The JFL92 also feels flimsy in places. -
If the 1510 had a Trackpoint, I'd think it was one of the coolest new designs out there.
I understand why they don't --it raises the pricepoint. Doesn't mean I can't dream though. -
Glad I got a 1500 now. The 8600 isn't even an option for the 1510. If I wanted crappy graphics I would have got a smaller laptop. Evidently you can't combine work and play at Dell. I can say the 1500 is heavy though.
-
Do we know how long the 1500 will be out before it is completely replaced and will become unavailable for purchase? I'm in NZ and the 1510 doesnt come out until 5th May. Was planning on getting the 1500 at the end of the year, maybe I will have to buy a good 7 months in advance..

-
I cant find a Dell Outlet in NZ.
-
Just checked it out, if you search Vostro it says there are 5 Vostro Notebook, but when you click on it there are only 4 of them.

I personally think that the current Latitude D6xx/D8xx Trackpoints are at least ThinkPad quality (and I'm typing this on a T61 right now), having worked on them (although the UltraNav button tilts things slightly in the ThinkPad's favor). And since I can type 75-80wpm, I hate having to take my hands from the keyboard to use a mouse or a trackpad.
AFAIK, licensing costs for pointing sticks limit the laptops they go on, and of course, it adds a bit of cost to the keyboard and requires another set of mouse buttons. So you'll never see them on anything but mid-to-upper-end business laptops. -
I use my trackpoint all the time when I am on my laptop. I considered buying the Lenovo portable travel keyboard (it is basically a ThinkPad keyboard, with Touchpad and trackpoint), but I decided not to. But now that we're on the subject again... *looks for prices again...

any one know any info about the 1710 i was looking into buying the 1700 but should i wait or what are the differences between the 2?
-
Hey guys,
Just found out about this today, my thoughts are that the 1510 is pretty much a competitor to IBM/Lenovo's T series... i mean, look at it. It literally looks almost like a ThinkPad! One potential downside is that by using the slot loading optical drive, it looks as if it is not removable, meaning you wont be able to use that bay for, say, a bay battery or a bay hard drive.
I really do like the lid though... its very glossy.
The 8400GS is kinda weak I guess for the 1510. I guess though for business it is not necessary, and thus is also why there is no Audigy sound option either. I will still say though that a TrackPoint is the signature feature of ThinkPads -
wearetheborg Notebook Virtuoso
Like hell it is. Thinkpads are much more rugged, with an internal metal rollcage. -
Anybody can tell me more info about the differences between vostro 1310 and vostro 1400/1500 in terms pf build and keyboard quality ?
I know the chassis is thinner for obtain a lighter laptop but I'm very interested into know if the keyboard has an amount of flex or not.
