MacBook Pro, ShmacBook Pro - Dell is launching its own new high-end notebook today with the Precision M3800. Coming with an NVIDIA Quadro K1100M and Intel's Core i7-4702HQ, the new Precision might be a good option for users sticking to the world of Windows.

Booyeah! Bokeh is already doing a swell job of owner's review here

This is what the MacBook Retina Pro should have been.
It would have been funny if Dell called the M3800 the M3800 Pro. -
Aside from style (and I think this looks great) the two aren't very different. By the time you pay for the screen and discrete GPU I'm guessing the prices aren't that different.

Glossy screen on a business notebook ...except for that, looks fantastic.
zerosource likes this. -
Except for the business-line GPU, what are the differences between this and the new XPS 15? The two look pretty similar to me, whereas I generally think of Precisions as having totally unique chassis' from Dell's consumer models (correct me if I'm wrong).
-
Precisions tend to have better build quality and better warranty service.
-
Definitely superior warranty service but yeah otherwise, this looks like they're rebadging the XPS 15 for their business lines. It wouldn't be the first time.
-
Well, the business-line gpu mean several fold increase in CAD performance, according to benchmark at least. And other not so important features that are essential for some.(ie real 10bit output from a 4lb machine, used to be at least a thinkpad w5xx to do that?)
-
Not sure that's true. In terms of raw compute, isn't the Quadro inferior to the 750M? There are reasons for a workstation user to want the Quadro, to be sure, but I don't know if raw performance is one of them.
-
The GDDR5 version of the 750M should out do the K1100m in games but the K1100m is still a decent GPU.

K1100m looks like a under-clocked 750m,
CAD is not really compute, but non pixel type of rendering. For CUDA compute then geforce probably come ahead.
though it is all about nvidia gimping the driver/ putting hardware restriction on the card/chip.

The K1100M has GDDR5. The clocks are also unlocked in case you want to run it at 750M speeds in the M3800.

I didn't even consider this notebook before reading some of Bokeh's comments and observations, it has enough cooling, storage and power for me, a central keyboard!!, is half the weight of my current model.
Just a pity it has a glossy touchscreen and will likely come entwined with a turd called windows 8 from Dell asia pacific -
Weegie, see the second link in my signature. There are some settings that weren't present in 8.0, that are available (though rather hidden away) in Windows 8.1, that make it a lot more "traditional" in operation than 8.0 was.

Needs a matte screen and a Ethernet port. I would rather have a native 16:10 1920x1200 panel than all these retina kool aid
-
I was thinking that, how well do the matte screen protectors work you can get in amazon as that could kind of solve the problem.
Also the lack of ethernet really isn't that bad as a usb-ethernet dongle is only around £10 and just make the cable a couple of inches longer. -
Raw performance doesn't mean much at all if the card can't run the code needed (CUDA) or runs it horribly, horribly slow (OpenCL, OpenGL).
-
Except Nvidia are a bunch of greedy [censored] that nerf their cards on purpose.
-
Oh, very very true. Just describing the current reality at the moment with the GeForce and Quadro.
-
Lots of companies do/did something similar
It's a popular practice now to get more money from people.
You even see things like that in the game industry (hello Capcom on disc DLC). -
So...a Precision Workstation with Mac-like keyboard and buttonless trackpad? Oy.
-
Oh Dell, where are your original designs!
-
They died.
Remember that a lot of things are dead now.
Real ThinkPads are no longer being made either. -
Almost as crazy as Apple trying to target the PROfessional market with a similar hardware design
-
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
on one side you have a pro gpu and enterprise class service, on the other side you have a better cpu and good consumer service
