Its quite possible this is just a prototype as all have noticed no digits/letters on keyboard. But the main thing is it was released to get people excited and it seems its done its job.
As i said 5 days ago, Ron Garriques from Motorola has moved over to Dell. Ron Garriques and his design team was solely responsible for the success of the RazR phone.

With the fabrication expertise of Asus (presuming) and design talent from Ron Garriques the new Dell laps will definately surprise

Can someone shed some light on the LED back light option? I'm not familiar with that technology.
What resolutions are possible with/without this option? The Integrated 2 megapixel webcam (VGA only on LED-backlit display) has me scratching my head here.
* 13.3-inch screen, configurable with LED backlight! (300cd/m2, or 220 with CCFL backlight)
* Integrated 2 megapixel webcam (VGA only on LED-backlit display) -
Basically most LCDs today are backlit with a CCFL. Instead of that, an LED can also be a backlight - typically they consume less power, are smaller, brighter, and produce more 'true' colors. The big downside is cost.
I'd imagine the reason you can only get a VGA cam with the LED option is because the lid is so much thinner, they couldn't git the 2mp camera in there. -
Dell was already in the big league -
Wow. Bye bye lust over Sony TZ, hello lust over M1330.
For those of you complaining that the pictures look fake - they are leaked renders of the laptop done a 3D CAD program. Of course not every detail will be on them. -
The 2MP camera is not available on the LED backlight option screen. The advantage of LED backlighting is a slight power savings and more even backlighting that's brighter.

Im new to the laptop, as unfortunately ive been a desktop user. However, i have been doing some research b/c i need one. I am going to be a first year medical student and am required to have a laptop, for those of u more knowledgeable about these, would this be a good choice for a med school laptop? I know it would be compatible and all b/c the school has a contract w/ dell. Thanks for the help.

Is no one else disappointed to see that, other than weight, the size has increased by about 10%? People are talking about how thin it is, but it's actually thicker than the M1210 at the widest point. The inability to rotate the webcam, the inconvenient media buttons, and the number of USB ports also seem to be something of a downgrade. To me, this seems more like a step backwards in terms of actual innovation--it's just an updated Sony instead of something unique, a triumph for everyone who pushes form over function.
-
did u take a second to actually think logically that a 13 inch notebook is going to be bigger than a 12 inch?
-
Please keep it clean people
-
The LED backlit option will have a 0.3MP webcam vs the CCFL's 2MP. I dont think it's too much of a loss considering the advantages of the LED's. Can't wait!
-
Did you take a second to actually read my post and infer that I prefer the footprint with the 12" screen and wish they had not increased it to 13"?
I know my opinion isn't the majority and I have no problems with people disagreeing with me, but being insulting is really unnecessary. -
Its exactly the same size and shape of the SZ, actually. As for thickness, yes, the M1210 was 1.2", but this has an average of around 1.05", and the sloping nature gives it a thinner look. And its unique enough: it adds the completely different hinge (you can say that it was ripped from the Sony S), a better webcam, even though it isn't rotating (the rotating webcam would have raped the profile of the notebook. It wasn't so much of a problem with the M1210 because, no matter what you want to say about it, it wasn't really a sleek notebook). I like the placement of the new media buttons on top better than the egde like on the M1210; when placed there, it was pretty easy to accidentally hit them. I don't like the touch-sensitive part though. The extra two USB ports were sacrificed on the alter of style; I, at least, am willing to give it up to have a beautiful notebook. And this has a better graphics card.
Updated Sony? I think its what the SZ should have been after the second or third series. Its no doubt that the SZ was the inspiration for the M1330, since the specs are similar, and dimensions are within millimetres of each other. But the M1330 is also aimed at a different market: portable entertainment/gaming, while the SZ is more of a business class notebook. -
I really dislike reading these awesome news and hearing people complain about "oh why didn't they go with the 8600M GT" blah blah blah. Can't people stop being greedy and appreciate that it comes with a card twice as good as the GO 7400?
Talk about biting the hand that fed you.
-
I really agree with you, Stella. There are sour points with moving up in screen size. But the notebook makes up for these issues by having an HDMI port, LED backlight, and dual mini-PCI slots.
Except that the hand that's feeding you probably costs around $2000 to extend within reach.
People are always going to want more. -
Logically, the 8400M GS is the fastest card they could have put into it without killing battery life and pushing temps to Rev1 MBP levels.
And if you notice, all of the M1330's competitors (Sony SZ, Samsung Q70, Asus W7S, Asus S37s) all have the 8400M G, with half of the pixel shaders, and 30% worse 3DMark06 scores. So Dell is out-doing them.
Eh, the competitions not much cheaper. The W7s and S37s are both $1500 at least, and the Q70 and SZ are 1800 or more. The SZ premium is even worse than that, and its the only one of the lot with LED backlighting. -
sesshomaru Suspended Disbelief!
I guess a 8400GT might have been possible.. bit underclocked, perhaps.
One of the best dells I have seen(Although that's not saying ,much.. most of their lineup is pathetic.) -
If this rendering portrays the actual product, Dell managed to center the screen on the M1330....
-
I doubt. The 8400GT is just an underclocked 8600GS. The 128bit memory would have created too much heat for a laptop this small and this thin.
And I think this is the best Dell computer I have seen, ever. -
I'll agree that this is the best looking Dell notebook I've seen, good for you Dell making effort on this.
-
Thanks Chuck - The screen is probably more important than camera so as long as you get a standard webcam that should take priority depending on price of the LCD.
-
From what i've seen the price is to be positioned between the 1520 and the 1720. Thinking back to when the 1505 and the 1705 first came out, it shouldn't be too bad of a starting price.
-
Do you really mean that? I believe their inspirons are the only pathetic ones (and not really that pathetic).
Precision, LATITUDE, and XPS lines are beautiful! -
I disagree with the Latitude part.
-
I hear you buddy. There's got to be a physical limit and this obviously would be just that... the straw that broke the camels back. Seeing how they went all out on every other aspect, I'm sure they would have fit a better GPU if they could. So guys, let's just rejoice this laptop for the beautiful being that it is!
-
anyone ever question where the extended battery is going to be?......
-
Wow, this thing looks like a beauty! Any guesses on what the base model will run? I'm thinking....$1400?
And here's to hoping Dell doesn't skimp on the screen quality. I love my m1210 and all, but my previous 700m had a MUCH more brilliant screen. -
For a Business laptop, they're overstyled. Silver lids and stuff.
Extended battery, probably out the back as before. I hope they make it look sleek; a random brick won't do. They could rip another thing off Sony and make a circular tube thing. -
Only problem with having it extended in the rear is that the LCD hinge is blocking it. Look carefully at the pictures and you'll know what I mean.
So business laptops HAVE to be dull, plastic, and black? If that was the case, I'd pass. -
http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/05/more-pics-of-the-dell-xps-m1330/
more pics of m1330 -
I'll be picking up one of these for sure. Now I don't know what color, red, black, or white. I wished they offered a sleek silver.
-
Alright, new pics added to the first post. It appears there will be three, not two colors. White is pretty ugly though, they should have gone with silver instead.
I wonder if the Red and white ones will get red and white interiors, respectively, or if they will get black too. It would be pretty cool if they did get the exterior colors as the interior colors. -
If you're familiar with the XPS M1210 designs then interior will be silver. I don't see how they could incorporate red, black, or white anywhere into the interior's design.
Good idea though, if they could pull it off that would be nice. -
Anyone? It would be appreciated.
-
there aren't any notebook out there that cater specifically to med/law/engineer school students. honestly, how are you going to use your laptop as a med school student any different than as a normal undergrad? if you want a car that serves its intended purpose then you buy a honda, but if you prefer extra performance with all the glitz then you go with a beemer, the same can be said for notebooks.
-
Look at the pics in the first post. The top and bottom bordering the screen are black. Those borders are what I meant by interior color. I guess a better term would be interior trim color. Most of the interior is silver, as is the trim on the exterior.
-
I had posted about this yesterday before the new pictures came from engadget. But the white is a glossy white while the red and black are matte. So that might sway some of you towards or away from the white.
-
I'm ready to buy!

Homer_Jay_Thompson blathering blatherskite
Do you think it will have a WXGA+ resolution option? I doubt it
.
-
I hope so - what resolutions would you expect from this 13incher?
-
Homer_Jay_Thompson blathering blatherskite
Sony, ASUS and Apple only offer WXGA (1280x800) for their 13.3" laptops. Yuck
-
Is this going to replace the M1210 or be offered as another model?
-
well anything higher than wxga on a 13.3" would give too small of a dot pitch
-
Homer_Jay_Thompson blathering blatherskite
If 12.1" laptops can support SXGA+ resolution screens without any problems, then a 13.3" laptop can support a WXGA+ resolution screen. -
wow what a beauty...i want one...but i have no money for it
-
Nice find.
I have a question, sorry if its a noobish question.
About how much better is the graphics card on the m1330 than the m1210?
I heard the m1210 has a horrible card with only..64megs of dedicated memory? -
Homer_Jay_Thompson blathering blatherskite
I think it will be slightly better, but not by that much. -
Not too much better. The main benefit of the 8400M GS over the Go 7400 is DX10 compatibility. Other than that, the 8400M GS is only slightly faster.
-
Oh, I see.
Thanks for the replies.
I'm guessing the graphics card is limited by the size of the laptop? -
It's partly size but also heat dissipation.
