That's one impressive machine....
Anyway, the only known way to overclock the CPU is through the BIOS menu (Press F2 early on boot).
The video card can be overclocked too, try the http://notebookforums.com Dell forums for guides.

I have the same notebook. Think I can safely overclock the T7200 (2.0GHz) to 2.33Ghz if I feel like it down the line? In case I need that... extra punch.
So far the Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz is VERY fast. I was playing Operation Flashpoint today. I was locked to 60FPS due to V-sync, but i'm fine with 60. You can disable it if you want, and i'm sure this machine could do more then 60FPS in this game. Fluid was the only way to describe the performance. No hiccups at all. full details, 1280x800. Old game but CPU intensive. Huge maps too.
That was just a test. I'm downloading Americas Army now. I'll tell you how it goes.
I also went to srtest.com. Didn't run through all the games, just a few I plan on playing.
I was way over the recommended specs for Americas Army, Battlefield 2142, and Half Life 2 according to the site. That's all I tested but i'll click on more soon, i'll post em up too. I should get some really good performance.
my stats:
2.0Ghz, core 2 duo
2gb 667mhz ram
sata hd 7200rpm
nvidia go7400.
Even though the go7400 isn't the top of the line card, it is performing VERY well so far. Notebook is great so far for the first 2 days. haha.
Edit: Thought this was the 1210. you get the picture though. If these performed great on mine, the the 1710 is even better with the more powerful vid card.
In Americas Army I get 80FPS indoors and a solid 30FPS outdoors. -
thx! -
I just wish I had one... -
I am finally at the point where I can afford one of these machines.. but I have one final question before i pull the trigger...
I really like the GTX series chips, would you guys think that the tad bit older Centrino M machine with a 7800GTX chip, be a better option than a 7900GS with a core duo? Wish they had a core duo model with the 7800GTX, i cant quite justify spending the money on a 7900gtx-7950..
Which would you buy for raw video processing? -
the 7900gs is better then the 7800gtx i think
EDIT: actually i think it's a lot better, and the 7900gs is a good ocer -

and the gs overclocks to 7800gtx speeds, search the 17inch dell forums on www.notebookforum.com and enter in the word "7900 gsx"
i think the thread should be on the first page anyways -
People have been able to overclock these chips on desktop MBs. -
Is there an updated thread on the newer configs of the xps?
I would like to add my comments and read others impressions of the newer batches. -
I would like to check with XPS m1710 owners what is the best Anti Virus/Internet Security Software you've used with your XPS M1710 regarding Less CPU/Resource usage.
I've used Norton 2006 and McAfee Internet Security suite, but have found that both consume lots of cpu usage, and decrease my system overall performance significantly.
Thanks -

I have one of the newer versions with a 7950gtx in it. Gamewise I don't have any real trouble (I'm new to laptops and have just found the 3dmark score doubles to about 4900 marks in 06 with high performance power settings and all the startup programs running - great jump from my desktop computer which gets 252 marks). It happily runs Oblivion with all settings on high and with added audio/visual codecs can play anything. Getting used to Windows Vista too.
The only problem I have with it is playing mp3s - they pop/skip 20 secs before the end of the song and also when the lightfx visual theme is enabled in wmp11 and winamp. Disabling the windows enhanced features (suggested by Dell) stopped the popping at the end on the mp3s but not while lightfx is enabled. -
Nice laptop but c'mon way to expensive i can't see a good reason to spend that much money on a laptop. If you want to buy a computer for gaming you wil have a much stronger desktop for less money + gaming on a laptop sucks compared to gaming on a bigger screen and better keyboard for the desktop. And as this laptop is way to heavy the place where it wil be most off the time is your desktop so tell me again why do you spend more money for a laptop ?

this is a bull **** review of xps. this laptop is piece of crap. you said the surface does not get hot??? lies i just added one more gig of ram total 2 gig and the computer cannot handle it...it shuts off after playing 15-20 of Call of duty 4 game. the surface gets extremely hot. the graphics card draws flickery graphics...the screen already has a dead pixel (dell won t do anything about it) dell sucks

Please don't bypass the language filter.
If you laptop is more than a few months old, then your fans are probably clogged with dusts making your system hot. I suggest that you take a look at the cooling guide for suggestion on how to keep your laptop cool.
Heat can cause graphic problems so you want to monitor your temps with this guide.
Also make sure your drivers are up to date or try 3rd party drivers(see the sticky in the gaming forum).
Dead pixel are unfortunate but they can happen to any LCD(regardless of manufacturer). Some companies have dead pixel polices(you have to have more than a few dead pixels) or they offer extra protection against dead pixels for a price.
BTW, the last post was three months ago so this thread is now closed.
Have a nice day/night.

LOL 3 months old? Look at the first post date

This should have been nuked a while ago -
Well I go by the date of last post when determining whether or not a thread is "old" since if we go by the date of when the thread was created some threads like TRT would be deleted.
We wouldn't want that would we Kevin -
