Economic Recovery May Signal End of Netbook Growth

According to a report from iSuppli, it is inevitable that netbook shipment growth will falter once the economy recovers. An analyst stated that people are buying netbooks because they are cheap and not because of the platform. Netbook growth over the last year has caused growth drops in other PC categories, such as desktop PCs.

I could see it happen, I hope it doesn't though. Students on a budget and families that don't really want to give their younger kids a full fledged laptop...there would still be a segment of buyers out there.

no word on when this will happen? hopefully soon. On a good note some of the big North Alberta Oilsands projects are getting restarted now that costs have come down. :D

Ooh, hopefully before this happens netbooks can catch up to their big brothers performance wise. That would probably keep them safe.

False. Budget laptops are just as cheap, which counters their assertion that people only buy netbooks because it's cheap.

It may go down a little but I don't see it getting killed. A lot of people (myself included) bought a netbook as an addition to their main PC/notebook, as opposed to buying a netbook as their main pc because of price.

I think the real competition is when comapnies start releasing these cheap 12-13" net/notebooks with single core ultra low voltage processory like in the upcoming acer timelines. But then. these machines start to blur the line between netbooks and notebooks

Notebooks that are in the netbook price range usually have poor battery life. One of the attractions of most netbooks is the good battery run time so they will still be attractive to people who either (a) want a second machine for use while on the move or (b) live in places with unreliable power.

Of all the netbook owners I know (my girlfriend included), all of them use it in addition to a "main" notebook, so I don't see this happening to a great extent.

Not really surprised, netbooks were always good for their cheapness.

I disagree with the article's conclusion, like others in the thread have already mentioned, netbooks are role devices, not full featured devices.

Good, let those "little pathetic laptops" die, or least don't focus on them much any more.
I want to see some more powerful 17'' and 15.4'' workstations.

Man, I love my little Aspire One with a condensed version and even with a total of 8Gigs of storage.

I've got my main laptop in my sig but when I'm overseas and just want to check e-mail or use skype, the little Aspire is perfect.

The convenience is worth the tiny price.

" once the economy recovers" one heck of stupid comment, obviously this report doesnt live in the USA.
he has no idea of the state of our economy, i'd like to know when our economy will recover? if it does, to what extend?
