Finally, Apple G5 PowerBooks and iBooks to Ship Q2 2005?

After over 12 months of somewhat painful speculation as to when Mac users can expect the world's most powerful portable computer, the wait may soon be over. Reports have surfaced thatTaiwan-based Asustek Computer (who manufactures the Apple iPod) has secured contracts to produce the iBook G5 and ship the new model to Apple in Q2 of 2005. Even more exciting though is news that Quanta Computer (also of Taiwan) will ship the first PowerBook G5 models.

It is my guess that this information makes a lot of sense based on three important facts:

1.No update to the existing G4 PowerBook line although completely expected was made at MacWorld this week in San Francisco.

    2. The next incredible OS X release dubbed "Tiger" is due to ship in Q2 according to the Apple website.

    3. The next MacWorld Conference and Expo will take place July 11-14 in Boston, MA. What perfect timing for a big announcement!

Shipping the G5 notebooks preloaded with the new OS makes perfect sense. As we receive more information, we will post it. Should the G5 still be unreleased come June, it is a good bet that we will be at MacWorld Boston to report live from the show floor. Until further updates, Mac Addicts keep your fingers crossed!

Where did you get this information? None of the major apple rumor sites even picked it up. Thinksecret appleinsider and macrumors all have nothing. If this is true that'll be great.

Wasn't this from a Slashdot Article that references a TheRegister article that references unconfirmed rumors from an article at DigiTimes that may have made a typo anyways.

A Taiwanese manufacturing report website that covers ODMs in China/Taiwan is the source for all this:

    http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20050114A7040.html

Even though it's about the Mac Mini and Shuffle, look at the chart and it lists the G5 too.

I really doubt this only because it mentions ibook and the powerbook. I highly doubt the ibook lower end will get the same chip as the powerbooks. But hopefully im wrong. And im guessing even if they ship it they won't until the next mac world which is months and months ahead. Hopefully though it is true that they were able to stick a G5 in the powerbook.

Anyone know if the 12inch powerbook is going to be changed to widescreen? Im really hoping for this but only heard a few weak rumors.

In fact one of the larger rumor sites has a post:

Additionally, Andrews source to the Digital Times article is a good reference.

this is most likely true, because ibm and amd have been touting a new lattice manipulation technique to improve electron flow that is different from basic soi. ibm is amd's manufacturing technology partner so they will likely apply this technology to apple as well. q205 is also a reasonable timeline to change manufacturing process and ramp up production.

since, the amd turion is reported to come it at 35watts with a 2ghz part (which btw is about 40% off what intel can do with the dothan@2ghz) this leads me to believe the g5 could be clocked at or near 2ghz since it has such a low transistor count compared with x86 architectures and still meet apples wishes for quiet and cool notebook computing.
