The Gateway MT6451 is one of Gateway's entry level retail versions from their M series notebook line. Though it comes in at a budget price point of $699, it packs an impressive set of features and a great build quality that you would expect at a higher price point. The following is a detailed user review.

It's a shame it came with a PATA 4,500 rpm, you should swap it with at least a 5,400rpm HDD, those HD Tune results are horrific.

    Great review!

Nice review, tho it's a shame to see your cpu temps.

I have the same cpu, albeit in a different laptop, and my undervolted cpu idles at 32* C, a far far cry from your 60!!! Even with the factory voltage settings my cpu idles around 39-41*C, so either you live in a very very hot environment and no AC, or Gateway's cooling solutions are absolute crap. Heck, even after hours and hours of dual orthos I can barely get my cpu to 55*C.

There's something weird with that HD Tune result for the hard disk and I wouldn't blame it on it being PATA. All normal data transfer test results show a steady decrease from left to right.

Look in Device Manager and see what the current transfer mode is for the primary IDE channel. It should be UDMA 5 or higher. I wonder if it is stuck at UDMA 2 (33MB/s). If it is below UDMA 5, how to fix? My approach would be to uninstall the primary IDE channel then reboot and let Windows redetect it. If that doesn't fix it, check if there is a newer driver / software for the ATI chipset.

The design of Gateway MT6451 reminds me old fashioned Sony Z1V/Z1R series.. :)

Transfer rates are horrible for this laptop. I'm going to try to upgrade the hdd soon.

I wondered the same thing. I did a hdd tune on my wd my book premium and I do get the steady decrease. I have had Vista on this thing for awhile and I have tried to give it all I can to allow Vista to work, but alas I am finally going back to XP now. I even tried to do a clean install today and the first one said it was corrupted =(, the second one wouldn't do any updates thru windows updates and gave me error codes that I couldn't find anywhere online and the third one wouldn't pick up my external drive unless I rebooted it everytime. So with some bb rewards and a 30.00 sale, I am going back to XP. YAY!!! Btw, thanks for the feedback, I'm going to recheck the hdd tune to compare when I get back on XP.
