H&R Block is perhaps the leading name brand in U.S. consumer tax preparation services, but does their online H&R Block At Home (formerly known as TaxCut) software live up to their in-person reputation? We break it down in this review.

First, a word about my tax return, which I will be using to test-run H&R Block At Home and a few other tax preparation Web apps. In 2009, I received unemployment pay, did freelance work, started a new job for an out-of-state employer, paid down a student loan, had a child in daycare, bought one house and sold another, and maintained a home office as a primary workplace. In short, mine is not a simple tax profile and, if these tax apps can handle what I throw at them without making me want to tear my eyeballs out, these programs should be able to stand up to the typical taxpayer pretty easily. So, let's see how H&R Block At Home fares.

I've used Taxcut (Now H&R Block At Home) for the past 4 years and have been very happy with it. I'm not sure how it compares to Turbotax as I have not tried it but generally it is less expensive. Your right that navigating outside of the interview is a little confusing. I would be interested to know if Turbotax or another program is better at this.

Just a question, maybe it's just me but, why would a notebook review site be "reviewing" tax software? :p I guess there's a correlation between a home software product and doing it on your notebook at home, still... :p I can see reviewing an anti-virus product for instance (which NBR has done in the past) since that directly relates to computers, but tax software? :eek2:

I've always used TurboTax Online edition, so it's nice to see how the competition fairs. My return's are dead simple so it doesn't matter which app I use I figure. :p
