Hewlett-Packard, one of the founders of the Silicon Valley computer industry, today announced plans to split the company into two parts; separating its personal computer and printer businesses from its enterprise technology services.

It's no secret that HP has been dealing with a multi-year restructuring plan, but on Monday we learned that the tech services division will take the name Hewlett-Packard Enterprise while the PC and printer business will use the name HP Inc.

I'm not sure I buy into the argument (I assume from HP itself) that this is to reduce distractions and allow HP Inc to focus on PCs and printers. It's perfectly easy to have separate divisions with separate employees under the same corporate umbrella, which would also eliminate distractions. To me, it feels like this is separating the coffers of Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (which, as I understand it, has HP's most profitable and stable divisions) from its struggling HP Inc, so that the latter can sink or swim without affecting the former's balance sheets. Just my take.

I love how Whitman stays at the helm of both companies. As if bowing to activist pressure makes you a leader... cult of personality that her successor at ebay isn't enjoying with the paypal split.

Just further proof that this is really about separating the books between the two divisions (allowing one to go under without affecting the other), not their nonsense about "independence" and "focus."
