Seems odd that the nc2400 is only available with Core Solo. I can't see myself buying something without Duo. Is that because of space or power reasons? Looking at the specs, it looks like it's a power thing.

Weight is 2.8lbs with 3-cell (28WHr) battery and presumably no optical drive. So probably more like 3.5lbs+ with 6-cell and optical drive. I don't see why this would beat some of the other choices out there. I wonder how the Dell D420 will stack up against this?

Interesting, looks like HP is in the works of completely upgrading their product lines.

eDIT: The Lenovo X60 is about the same size and weight, and it has a Core Duo, so it's not heat, and for power they could just undervolt the Core Duo CPU like they do in the X60, I really don't know why it's available with only Core Solo..

Finally, HP have a new model but I think it's too late... I really wonder why HP does not offer the mid end dedicate graphic adapter since late April. All I heard from that period is just a new laptop that offer Turion and Yonah equip with huge 17 inch monitor.)

In my opinion, Intel will launch Merom around August. So, these new models have very short lifeshelf. Well, nc8400 is very nice but I like Asus A6J more. (everything is very similar but A6J already availible in my country for a month.)

umm.. the question is Intel will try to suicide itself by launch Merom on August or not. Maybe Intel want to stand in the same fight with Taylor but.. Intel will hurt its own Yonah. How're poor...

So on the spec sheet for nc6400 it has FreeDOS as an option. Does that mean that it will actually be possible to buy one of these laptops without paying for yet another windows license?

I'm not sure if this is possible yet, but it will be possible eventually. You may have to wait for them to release a customizable model. (For instance, note that the nc6400 is listed as having an option for a WXGA+ screen, but according to the salesperson I talked to this is not yet available.) The older models which are customizable are definitely available with FreeDOS. I did talk to one salesperson who said that the non-customizable models are still available with FreeDOS for a $75 price reduction, but I wasn't 100% convinced since I didn't actually buy the machine. I'd encourage you to try and report back if you do want the machine.

Thanks for the reply. I am seriously considering the nc6400. The power to size ratio is very attractive and the price is better than something like a Vaio. However, i wasn't planning on buying one until the end of the summer, so things might change a bit by that time.

God ****, if the nc6400 is the successor to the nc6230 that was in direct competition with thinkpad's T serie, then another one goes widescreen. What is becoming of this world!
