This article serves as a review for the HP DV4000 notebook, and specifically the DV4170us model. It is a medium sized laptop and a great multimedia companion. It is a Centrino machine that weighs in at 6.5 lbs. making it fairly light seeing how it is close to a desktop replacement in features.

Thanks for the review Hassan, you've done a nice job...and kinda lucky your old laptop kicked it so you ended up with this! Those hard drive benchmarks are pretty darn slow, I'm sure you could get some extra performance kick with a hard drive upgrade. But you seem pretty happy with performance as it is, so likely not worth bothering. I totally agree on the screen, I've seen these in Best Buy and it's an impressive view.

Yeah, you could upgrade the hard drive, but if it seems okay, don't bother. Most new computers, when bought new, will be very speedy - that's why it's good to keep it clean : use antivirus software, spyware blockers...etc. Enjoy, and excellent review!

Great job!! I enjoyed the review, you added some nice details. The dv4k is definitely an excellent choice for a multimedia machine, and looks to be quite fast too.
Well, good luck with it, and above all, have fun!!!! -
Thanks for the excellent review. Please keep us posted on how well the Synaptic drivers continue to work with your Alps touchpad.

Great Review, makes me want to get it even more. But where do you get the drivers you were talking about (touchpad and wireless)? If I were to get one at best buy that had a dead pixel would they let me exchange it like you did, or did they only do that for you? Thanks

no the dead pixel incident is a policy, but u must be under the best buy warranty to do it, but i dont know how it would play out if you had just bought the laptop and it came with a dead pixel, im sure BB or HP would do something for you
drivers for the intel card were direct from the intel site
drivers for the synaptics touch pad actually were the rolled back drivers
hope this helps...ps anyoen know how much a 100 gb 5400rpm drive would run me...i want to upgrade but i dont want to break the bank just for an hd although it would be nice, i wanted 7200 rpm originally, but those things might require a second mortgage
im about to run hdtune again to check on those speeds, my hd was full of stuff so i will post my results as of now after cleaning it, thanks for the complements guys -
Hi there,
Great review! I noticed in your photos that your laptop has an inordinate number of stickers on them. Were you able to remove them cleanly?
I remember reading a forum thread about removing stickers... can anyone point me to it?
Thanks! -

heheh i love the stickers, one is actually a pc mag editors chioce
the two white ones began to peel off after a week of just sitting there....and left absolutley 0 residue
im keeping the gem sitckers on...meaning the centrino and windowss xp, im sure they will come off find though -
if your drive.. ur dvd writer a TSST corp drive?
my buddy just bought this pc 4170 and it has a lightscribe burner in it.. though the specs dont state that, even the new nero version that she bought, states it's light scribe ..
i dunno if ur using nero or anything let us know thanks -
Funny, those two stickers also began to peel off about 2 weeks of use, they just wouldn't stick on anymore so I just took em off, they left no residue. I actually liked the stickers but they would just start to peel off by themselves after I put them on the notebook. I thought I was the only person with this issue.
My Centrino and XP stickers still stick and I don't think they'll come off by themselves.
Its a shame I bought this Dv4000 just before they upgraded it with dedicated graphics. -
I'm also curious to all the owners of the DV4000. Is your keyboard keys beginning to get shiny and smooth? Mine's are and I'm a little ticked off about that and I've only had it for two months.
