It seems like HP's consumer line has been pulling further and further away from Dell's with each generation, recently. The dv-series notebooks are not only mostly better than Inspirons, they are also usually slightly cheaper. Honestly, I like the dv-series over Dell's XPS notebooks, and they are significantly cheaper than that.

    Stop saying that.

I agree with overall review. DV7 is the better.

Agreed. In the sub-$1000 segment, HP's really had Dell beat lately. It has a much greater presence in stores, has better discounts online, and overall has thinner and sleeker machines.

Yeah, at least among people who I've helped pick out laptops and have a constrained budget, a backlit keyboard was a very minor consideration that most just didn't care about. Makes sense to me, since I don't think I ever work on a computer in an environment so dark I can't even see the keys.

The HP is also available with better options. You could get a full HD 1080p screen on the HP for theoretically under $800.
