HP has released the Compaq Presario v2000, a 14" widescreen notebook that will compete with the Dell Inspiron 700m and Sony VAIO S series notebooks. This notebook can be configured with a Pentium M or Celeron processor, up to 1.0GB RAM, up to 80GB hard drive, optional Wi-Fi and optional built-in CD/DVD burner. The v2000 is available from HPShopping.com now.
Compaq Presario v2000 Oblique View
The Compaq Presario v2000 is targeted at those users that need to be mobile with their laptop, mostly business users that travel and work between and office and home, but students that commute between campus and home might also be interested in this notebook. The 14.0" widescreen will be good for keeping total notebook size and weight down, but giving ample viewing for such things as spreadsheets or DVD movies that benefit from a wider view.

Well, the site is unfortunetely down. It this new notebook can really compete with Dells 700m and Sonys S-series depends on its size. So - what is actually its size? No specs found yet...
-
With it's 5.21 lb weight and integrated graphics, I doubt that there is much competition. It certainly is HPQ's move to this market niche, but it better has a very low price tag. I wish some other brand could just import/brand Benq's Joybook 7000 -- it beats this machine hands down, lighter and more powerful.
-
that's really sad the HPShopping.com site is still down, guess they're not selling much right now!
Here are approximate dimension specs, I added it to the article as well:
9" x 13.1 " x 1.25 " (H x W x D) -
" 14" widescreen notebook that will compete with the Dell Inspiron 700m and Sony VAIO S series notebooks."
at 5.2 lbs and intel graphics chip, this in another league from the sony S series. The Sony S series is all about the ATI 9700 at 4.2 lbs. I recommend this be cut out from the description. -
I see your point with this, I guess I should clarify myself by saying HP "intends" to compete with the VAIO S and Inspiron 700m but it certainly is a cheaper and inferior notebook to the S series in most regards, but it really is the closest form factor that HP offers to these notebooks and I do think an HP sales person would tell you this is what they offer in place of a Sony S if you asked them for a competing HP product.
-
Has anyone gotten their hands on one of these? I am leaning towards the dell 700m because of dells reputation but I would like to know how this performs. If anyone has any comments, good and bad, about compaq vs. dell I would love to hear them.
-
I think this is is quite pretty. It has some serious design innovations that I would not expect to see from Compaq.
- no ports on back
- USB on right and left side
- a very 'Apple' design.
At first the design looks like the 3xxx series AMD DTRs that Compaq is selling. On closer inspection you can see that it has borrowed some design ideas from Apple.
White/light grey. Hinge style.
I would have considered this if it came with a GF4 or Radeon 9200 or better. Too bad.
laptops: Toshiba R100 (current), iBook 800, PowerBook G4 400, iBook 600, Compaq 2811CA, Sony VAIO Z505JS, NEC Versa SXi, Compaq Presario 1685 -
I would also like to hear some reviews if anyone has any on this laptop. Also, do you think the 1.3 celeron would suffice for basic needs(word processing, internet, aim, etc)? this laptop seems to be quite a good deal, as it is far cheaper then its competitors in the thin and light field, even despite its lower specs..
-
hp should be congratulated for finding a better form factor. this notebook is 1/3 cheaper than the s series and it isn't made of plastic and it has a larger screen. on the other hand, hp is shipping this with a 'toy' integrated 3d processor, which gamers should avoid.
-
Has anyone been able to confirm if the outer frame is metal or plastic? I loathe how my existing Dells feel (Two Inspiron 8000's and an 8500).
I'm about ready to jump ship from Dell -
^^ Heh, your notebook is almost the same as mine ... except I didn't order the 12 cell battery.
I just ordered mine off HP's phone service. Two weeks was the estimate there too.
I can't figure out why the single 512 Memory module is cheaper than the 2x256.
I think the single one may take up the space of both - so you cannot add more ram without replacing the entire memory module (which means you'd need a 1.0 GB module to upgrade).
Can anyone confirm this? This was the "gist" I got from the phone sales rep. -
I just bought this from Costco.
I was also thinking about getting the HP dv1000. I talked to a sales lady at Compaq, and she said the main difference between the HP and the Compaq is software.
Compaq is more business oriented, the HP is more for home. the HP allows you to play DVDs and CDs without booting up, the Compaq does not.
the HP comes with the option of the remote ($15), the Compaq does not.
she was pretty adamant that the integrated graphics would work well with all of today's games. in any case, you could always play the game, but you might not get quite as good of graphics. I told her the 32mg video card requirement for madden, and she thought it would be totally fine. I guess the integrated card goes up to 64, theoretically. who knows, maybe she was full of it.
the 6 cell battery is the same size at the 12 cell, and the computer rests flat. I tried to describe the pic on this site with what looks like an extra lump on the bottom of the battery, and she wasn't sure what that was.
This are my specs. It comes in two weeks.
Intel(R) Pentium(R) M Processor 705 (1.5 GHz)
512MB DDR SDRAM (1x512MB)
60 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive
DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
Intel(R) Extreme Graphics with productivity ports
Intel(R) Pro/Wireless 2200 802.11BG WLAN
14.0" WXGA Widescreen (1280x768)
Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Home Edition
Microsoft(R) Works/Money
12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
$1250.99
$110 tax
-$30 mail in rebate. -
I can't see how the 1x512 takes up both slots. That doesn't make any sense.
But then again, I'm not sure why it's cheaper anyway. I figured it was just an error on the Costco website.
Did you get the xBright? It seemed way too reflective for me.
-
Does anyone know if that 6x1 reader will take compact flash?
-
Doesn't look like it:
hpshopping.com says:
xD digital memory, Secure Digital, MultiMedia, Memory Stick, MS-Pro Memory Stick , and SmartMedia cards.
-
If the difference between the HP and Compaq is software, can you tell me what the difference is?
The 1 x 512 mb configuration says that it takes up one bay allowing for easy upgrading later on.
It doesn't take compact flash which kind of sucks. But you can easily get a PC Card for less than $10 that can take the compact flash card.
It doesn't make sense that the 12 cell would be the same size as the 6 cell. I guess you'll see when you get it.
I purchased the DV1000 instead of this one since I thought it looked better. I'm waiting to get mine in two weeks too. I'm interested to see if anyone has gotten the dv1000 or v2000 and their comments. -
I was considering the DV1000 as well -
The HP/Compaq rep that I spoke with said that they were the same computer manufactured in the same place and shared almost all the same parts.
The only difference is that the HP comes with that "quick play" feature so you can watch movies. The rest of the specs were all the same. But, the HP does cost a bit more. I guess the only difference is how they're marketing the two laptops. What's weird is that they didn't even submit the Compaq V2000 to most popular agencies for review. PCWorld and CNet have only reviewed the DV1000.
I really don't see the V2000 as a business laptop (even though the phone rep said it was). I think it's just a student machine - and since it's so cheap; it is hard to pass up.
If anything, I like the Compaq more because I like the colorWith all these nice looking iBooks around now-a-days, it's nice to see a PC equivalent.
-
I really like this laptop the only reason that keep me from buying one right now is the video card. Why can't they put a Radeon 9700 in it or at least offer an option to put one in. My Presario 2800T is getting old can't run the latest game on it anymore......
The design is really good, I like it a lot. -
I can venture a few guesses at the extremely sub-par video card...
First, there is really no market for the "budget gamer." No one makes a system that will barely get by. So, rather than putting in a sub-par video card - they just skirted the issue entirely and made no effort at all. They're making this computer out to be a solution for a casual business person / report-writing student.
That "Extreme Intel" video garbage is probably so cheap that Intel was giving it away to HP/Compaq in return for using their Pentium M instead of the Athlon XP-M
Compaq still sells that R3000 for gamers. -
Hope it's the same for the Compaq:

if only this had the remote you can get with the hp dv1000!
-
v2000 got the option of Celeron(R) M 330 (1.4 GHz) today
-
Geeez, Compaq (I mean HP) needs to get their feature-set figured out already.
Between September 5 and September 8 they changed what features were available on their online ordering system... I didn't even see the XBright screen until the 8th.
So when is HP going to get rid of the Compaq brand entirely? -
I called them up a fortnight back asking them about the Briteview option and the remote which were raved about in almost all reviews but were conspicuously absent from the hp website.
The support personnel informed me that they were not in stock of these components and were planning to include them soon.. This is soo wierd... Why introduce it when you still havent gotten your act together?!
Also very few retailers other than hp seem to be carrying this laptop currently. Anybody have any clue as to when other major stores like best-buy or comp-usa take note of this notebook ?
-
yea I'd like to know also. Do you think there is any chance at getting the remote for the compaq?
-
What features are "remote-controllable" on the HP DV1000?
I'm guessing that since the V2000 lacks that QuickPlay feature, that the remote would be mostly useless. -
Whohoo, FedEx just dropped off my V2000 today
I guess they shipped these laptops out much earlier than expected... the estimated ship date for the order is still October 4 on the hpshopping.com website
I'll write a review about this doo-hickey later... but this thing has definitely met my expectations
By the way, it does not have a CF slot
-
For those who are using the v2000, could you let us know how loud the fan on this laptop is.
-
I just ordered one of these for a business client. He's not a gamer, doesn't need the added speed of fancy gpus, and wanted something larger than a 12" screen but lighter than any 15" widescreens sold by the major brands. So actually it's a fairly good fit, I hope.
I found a pic of the 12 cell battery if anyone is interested. It indeed sticks out and is NOT the same size as the 6 cell.

Cnet described "typing on the 700m is a chore" with a 90% size keybord
-
My Compaq V2000 came from Costco yesterday.
BigAlec was right, the 12 cell battery does stick out from the bottom, tilting the keyboard forward. The HP salesperson told me the 6 and 12 cell batteries were the same size. Schweet.
Overall I'm pretty pleased. It seems quite fast, much faster than my 2 mhrtz with 512 RAM I use at work. The screen looks great, no dead pixels. I'm glad I didn't go with the brightview option--I saw it at BestBuy and it was too reflective and shiny.
The fan seems fine. You can hear it when it comes on, but it's much quieter than previous Dells and Compaqs I've owned.
It came preloaded with several MS programs--word, outlook, excel, PPT on a 60 day trial. All you have to do is put in a code to unlock full access.
I need to check this out more, but I put in an older DVD, and when it was on the widescreen, it left me with 4 black bars on the top, bottom, left and right. When I switched it to full screen, I still had the black bars on the left and right. I'll try it with a typical movie tonight, to see if it can extend all the way to the edges.
The videocard seems fine. Played THPS2 and NHL 2002 with no problems. -
I have had the V2000 for about 2 weeks now and am quite happy with it for my needs. I ordered the 1.8, 512MB RAM, and Briteview along with whatever standard options it has and am using it for writing papers, browsing the web, and watching DVDs. My only problem with it is that I feel the battery life is much shorter than what was reviewed on CNET or PCMag. PCMag said they got 3 hours 45 minutes on the DV1000 with Briteview. With wireless turned off, the power meter gives me a max of around 3 hours. Poor battery life was one of the reasons I didn't get the Dell 700m when it came out but it seems the Compaq has the same problem. I haven't actually run the battery down yet, so maybe I should have done that before posting, but I was wondering if other users are noticing the same thing.
-
could you please post some pics of your v2000
-
I've had my v2000 for a week now, and it's been great
I have wireless turned on - and the battery lasts me about 3 hours. I have the 6 cell.
I also have the brightview screen. I'm really happy with it. I've never had a "shiny screen" notebook before. This thing is definitely easier on the eyes and has a lot better contrast than my previous machines. The resolution isn't all that great but the color and clarity is excellent.
Also, considering that my Dell Inspiron gets hot enough to burn me - I'm very happy with the V2000 and its comfort. The full-size keyboard is easy to type on... the weight is fine on my lap... and the fan never gets so loud that it's annoying.
I'm really enjoying the price too.... less than $1100 after rebates and stuff - but even the before-discount price is great -

Can the people who have the v2000 let me know what CDs came with the box when you purchased this laptop?
I read that HP is now following sony and is no longer shipping the windows xp CD and other driver CDs. Instead, HP stores the "recovery" data in the harddrive of the laptop. The user has to then burn his/her own recovery discs.
Is this true? -
^^ You'll be glad to know that HP/Compaq did a very nice job in packing the support materials.
I ordered my notebook with Windows XP Home... I got the following:
1) Windows XP Home CD Key at the bottom of the notebook
2) One Windows XP Home re-installation CD (no installation customization options)
3) HP Drivers CD (very easy to click and install drivers and software)
4) Windows XP Critical Updates DVD
5) Microsoft Works CD
I always reformat any new computer that I have to test the installation discs. It took me about an 90 minutes to get the notebook back up and running. -
Can someone please tell me about the case material? Is it plastic? Does it scratch easy? Finger prints, grease, oil from your body, does it show up? How about the build quality? If you pick it up with one hand or rest your palm on it does it squeak in any particular places?
-
I recently received my HP dv1000 and love it. It feels very solid and I am quite pleased with the battery life. I have the 12 cell battery and it lasts me around 7 hours with wireless turned on about half of the time. The 14.1 brightview widescreen is amazing. I know this is a compaq forum but they are basically the same machine.

Might you be able to post the review here as well just in case this forum doesn't post it. Thanks!

Most of the panal casing is plastic, but the sides (where the ports and dvd player are) are metal.
I've got a really weird bug with mine, is anyone else having this problem? If I leave my computer on a soft surface like the cloth or leather seat and use the CD drive at the same time, the computer instantly shuts off after 10 min. I haven't tested all the variables, but given the parameters above, it happens every time. Bizarre. It doesn't feel like it gets too hot; and the fan vents are unobstructed. It's not set to go on standby or anything like that.
It works fine on my desk though, so I'm not too worried. -

Does anyone know where you can see one of these in person? I just called Best Buy, Comp USA, and Circuit City and none of them carry it.
I live in New York City.
Thanks for the help. -
I saw both, the v2000 and the dv1000 at Office Depot last nite. I'm in Southern California.

hey all--
i went to see the dv1000 with brightview at the Circuit City at Atlantic Center in Brooklyn, New York.
i must say the vertical viewing angle is a serious issue in my opinion. the below 0 degree 'darkening' that has been described in these forums was quite pronounced, and the bleaching effect in degrees above optimal was also quite extreme. bottom line is that vertical range in which screen colors and resolution are solid is very narrow. i did not find the horizonatal viewing angles to be an issue, though there was slight bleaching.
for me, this is a lethal blow, though i would like to see this unit without brightview. incidentally i did observe significant glare/reflections under CC's fluorescents, but it is hard for me to know how things might look in other well-lit environments (like outside).
seeing this notebook also helped me decide that i'd like a higher-res screen. though i have been using 1024 x 768 for desktop screens often, i think with 14+ inch widescreen LCD higher resolution is a big plus. as someone who does audio editing and web design, i would really appreciate the extra real estate, too. to this end i am looking at the Sager 3790 (a Clevo unit also available from other brands) and maybe the Dell 700m, though I am concerned 12" is too small.
there are many things to like about the v2000/dv1000 though! among them:
* extremely decent sound for a laptop. little bass though -- even in the vocal range, but great volume and overall projection
* fantastic size and weight
* good keyboard (did observe much flexing)
* well-executed media functions and the lure of a remote
* several configs to choose from
aesthetically the dv1000 was fairly snazzy, though the white icons on the perimeter of the keyboard definitely detract. it would also be great to see more of the v2000's rounded edges, but whatever.
anyhow best of luck to you all in your quest for notebook nirvana.
