    Is it just a basic amplification? I guess I'm interested if the speakers have volume controls themselves, or are you supposed to depend on the iPod's internal audio out volume control (via the ClickWheel)?

    You do have to control the volume via the Mp3 Player. The only switch the unit has is the "On/Off" switch. I can promise it gets plenty loud though.
