An OS to me is unfortunately just an OS. Even one as terribly PC unfriendly as Win 8.0 or its latest form 8.1.
New apps such as Food & Drink and Health & Fitness ? Not applicable and like the vast majority of 8.x apps not that interesting or usable outside of the USA
SkyDrive is now completely integrated with the Photos app ? Nah, if I at all have any internet privacy left I'm not going to store more stuff in clouds above the NSA
The new Calendar app adds a "What's Next" ? Possibly handy on a mobile phone. Not so much on my PC
New Mail app, ... has a "power panel"... that lets you organize messages... " ? Fascinating stuff but where's my POP ? Using email accounts over POP on Windows 8 and Windows RT
But I do actually like Win 8 even though their idea of bringing back the startbutton in 8.1 is hyperbole. This guy says it all so I don't have to Windows 8.1′s Start Button Isn’t A Start Button | TechCrunch.
Or the user friendliness of making me move the mouse to a corner and WAIT for a hidden tool menu to appear.
Yet, I've still got it installed even though my Win7 DVD keep crawling closer to the DVD-slot -
An entire rant about not wanting to go to the live tile interface, without a mention that with 8.1, you can also change the behavior of that button to launch a customizable, reorganizable all-programs list?

Lots of 'cool' things (or just things we've gotten used to since Windows 3.1) are possible in Win 8, shame that so much of it isn't intuitive or easy to reach for everyone.
Perhaps when they release 8.1 with the help activated, including videos and whatever, that things will improve -
It's unnecessary. The start menu is antiquated, just hit Windows+Q and start typing the name of the program you want to execute. It's infinitely faster and has access to every app. Entering the desktop after boot is a one-click affair and then I never have to do it again until I actually reboot. 99% of the time it's just sleeping so that's not every often. I don't get the Win8 hate.

It's always been a love/hate with M$ ... Metro just made it worse...put this way for those that has worked service jobs...the one motto we always got told was "The Consumer is always right" *hack* *hack*...and also the end-user like to customize their preferences not ballamer preferences there a big difference in these two preferences and they don't mash. I can do the same thing on Windows 7...Windows Key and type my search...and away I go....and I can boot from cold or warm restart straight to Desktop no messing around to even get to Desktop. Windows7 get the job done and did it well....Start menu and Desktop....acting as one and right in front of you no looking for where did it go or how do I find it. -
I'd time that before claiming something like that. How's this: how much do you have to type to start a certain program? What if several programs have similar names?
For me the common stuff is on the taskbar and can be started with one fast swipe + one tap. Or Windows+1/2/3...
The less used stuff are listed in the start menu and is accessed by Windows, swipe + one tap. Or Windows, Alt+1/2/3... -
It's even worse on Server 2012 when you are trying to find some random application that is typically easy to find in the start menu.

I do not want to use Windows 8.1 for FREE! It must mean something...
