MSI’s Dominator line has consistently been one of the best deals in gaming. Previous iterations weren't always the best to look at, but having ditched the old boxy design in favor of a more aggressive aesthetic, the MSI GT72 Dominator Pro looks to offer a more complete package.

Boasting an NVidia GeForce GTX 980M and four lightning-fast SSDs, the desktop replacement offers top of the line performance capable of tackling the latest games. It’s an impressive combination that justifies the device’s steep $2,900 price tag (starting at $1,800), but the lackluster display may turn some users away.

Maybe nVidia Optimus was not enabled and that is why the battery life wasn't that good?
I would prefer to buy a MSI GT60/GT70 instead of a GT72 because I could buy one used and later upgrade the CPU to a 4940MX extreme CPU thanks to the socketed CPU! GT72 is soldered

Why isn't there ever any comments in the articles themselves? They never get approved?

Nvidia optimus isnt included in this laptop, which i personally much prefer, as optimus can present many issues as others have experienced.
The gt72 has a button on the left side to toggle between integrated intel hd graphics and the 970m/980m. If strictly on the intel HD graphics i can get really good hours of the battery life.

In regards to the socketed cpu, intel is trying to shift the trend for all laptop platforms to use soldered cpu's. Clevo and sager and their spinoff brands have introduced desktop cpu's such as the 4970k/s lineup into laptops but thats a whole different topic. Long story short, the entire laptop market will one day be moved into socketed cpu's. Granted cpu's dont provide that much performance benefit in regards to gaming so as long as youre buyign this with a gaming focused view a 4940mx and a 4710 wont net you too much discernible difference.

The gt72 provides you with an opportunity to change out the graphics card on an mxm interface which is i think a dealmaker as other brands dont entirely guarantee an upgrade path and a gpu upgrade will always provide more performance than a cpu upgrade.

tl:dr, in the future the gt72 may be the best bet for most mainstream gaming laptop buyers unless you go the clevo/sager route.

Oh I didn't know the GT72 had a video card upgrade promise like the GT80 does, good. I am curious how far MSI will take it, eventually they'll say no, sorry, you need a new laptop now. It'll be fun to watch if they custom make the PCB or make a new heatsink for each new video card.
Yes gamers won't see the benefit of a more powerful CPU but for overall responsiveness (with an SSD from the get go), compressing files, engineering work would be faster.

Very true indeed about cpu's, id always enjoy a better cpu in my laptops but then for a strictly "gaming orientated" laptop like the gt72 i can see msi's case for foregoing that option, if it was for a workstation laptop however, would be a whole different story.
For the time being it appears like MSI is making good on their promise for upgradeability since the last gen gt72's have the option to upgrade to the current 900m series gpus, can only hope that msi continues their upgrade kits if they see good profit margins/market case from them.

    Nice review Mike.

It's a shame MSI gimped the keyboard by making Home and End secondary keys.
