Was wondering if anyone can help? Got the 8103 and basically restored the system - but now I can't re-install the Platinum Secure again cause it seems to want me to insert a blank smart card...
What can I do?
Also, is anyone having problems with the screen flickering when the battery is charging? Think I might have to call Acer bout that..
Thanks. -

Looking for the Acer 8104wlmi to try and not have to worry about the restock fee, where can I buy? Where I live, there is NOBODY around that sells acer, thus I must resort to online stores.
Any Thoughts?

Acer releases first software update (ePowerManager v1.5.5.252) for the Travelmate 8100 series here:

Well I thouhgt what the heck here are my intial thoughs after 1 week. These forms have been good to me so here is a little something back. I can post some pics if anyone is interested - but there are allot out there already.
Since the review I have formated the HD , reinstalled everything. I no longer have the 3-4 gig Acer recovery partition. I am pretty comfortable with this set up - just bought I an external USB case (ADS) , slapped a 160gb Maxtor 7200rpm drive in there and have images of all my machibe with Acronis True Image 8.0 and Drive Image 7.0). I have an issue with the Acronis software , have that post in software form.
Pretty similar to dkoo's excellent review .. (see his review for Gaming benchmarks not much of a gamer )
Overall I am very pleased. Biggest complaints are the keyboard , the caps lock / disk activity light and standby when closing the lid (disconnects my VPN when traveling from one room to another )
Specs :
TravelMate 8104WLMi
Intel Pentium M760 (2 GHz)
15.4¡¨ WSXGA + TFT
1024 DDR2 RAM
100gb (5400 RPM) HDD
5 in one card reader
DVD ¡V Super Multi
Modem / LAN 56k , 10/100/1000 BASE T BT
Wireless Intel PRO Wireless 2915ABG
Windows XP Pro SP2
I purchased it in Edmonton,. Alberta, Canada ¡V Took 3k CDN out and have enough left to buy myself a steak dinner (tip not included hahaha). Here is the last weeks worth of using.
Initial Impressions:
Box it came in was very small machine is very light and thin (compared to my Dell Latitude). I am not a road warrior, but for those that are, this machine should pose no issue. Power adapter is nice and small as well ¡V not the bricks you see with some machines. Although after all day use , it can get quite hot.
Build quality looks good. The Dell feels more solid, but then again it is. Chassis has a solid feel. The lid closes nice and tight. There is a bit of a spring on the back end with the lid closed (the middle piece between the latches) but should not pose an issue. System goes into standby with lid closed (there is a little toggle switch next to the Cap Lock light)
There are 4 hot buttons up in the right hand corner. Email / Browser / Acer Emanager and a programmable one. The Cap Lock / Num Lock and Disk activity buttons are very dim and hard to see and out of place I think. Could have raised them somewhat and made them brighter.
Pretty much plugged it in , turned it on , went through the initial XP set up stuff and we were good to go. I did look at the users guide to see what some of the lights and buttons were for. While the symbols may be international, I was not sure which was wireless and which was Bluetooth. I will likely re-install everything I really need from scratch, for purposes of this review I left everything installed on and also installed my software which added extra services etc. On boot up I am using about 300 - 350mb of memory. I also noticed the lack of Hyper threading a few times with huge downloads and installs happening simultaneously machine was maxed out but that was to be expected.
Burnt DVD Backup (that worked used a DVD+R) 4x DVD
I burnt another test DVD at 8X (Nero) worked fine
Convert C and D to NTFS (convert c: /fs:ntfs convert d: /fs:ntfs) what is with FAT32 ?? That was just being lazy
Left 2 - 3 gig recovery partition
On Battery (100% - wireless on) I installed software / Some Inactivity 06:12 - 09:26
3 Hours 14 Minutes (4% left) reasonable amount of time
Second Recharge / Drain (showed 03:48 at 100% - wireless on ) Played DVD / downloads / Some Inactivity: 13:22 - 16:08 ( 2 hours 46 mins) before it shut down o hibernation mode
So with wireless off I suspect you could watch the entire LOTR Return of the King extended version
Install Software MS Office / Oracle / Telnet / Nero / All MS critical updates / etc - things I use Daily wanted the Machine to have all the software I use on it (including all the processes ) to give it more of a real world feel.
Left all defaults setting from factory (Windows Indexing / All services / Performance options, etc). One could alter those if one wanted to tweak performance.
Power Adapter plug in on the right had side near the back is an interesting place? I would have preferred plugging into the back .
They get the left hander's with the Network / Modem jacks on the left hand side. But the USB port is in front of the Network / Modem Connection so a mouse cord should not interfere. Still a USB port in the back would have been nice. One of my biggest beefs with my older Dell was the network connection was on the right hand side instead of the back. (But the dell did not have any USB connections in front either so like I said the cord should be ok) Besides you could always use a wireless mouse (USB toggle or Bluetooth ) that takes the wire interference out of the equation.
All USB ports ,3 on the right, one on the left (a nice touch to accommodate left hander's) one on the back would have been good to plug a hub in but not a big deal.
Using a USB wired mouse attached to the right hand side USB port the cord gets in the way of the Optical drive that is a bit of a pain.
I had the Acer running (installing software) for about 4 hours. Had it on my lap for a bit after than , surfing and the underneath side was warm ¡V not hot per say but noticeable.
I am not a touch typist and while the fans were running if I rested my hands on the side of the machine , I could feel the vibrations when the Laptop was sitting on a solid surface (my Desk) felt weird and was only while fans were on. When it was on my lap I did not notice the vibrations so much. Some of the Keys take getting use to. End / Del / Page up / Page Dwn were not in a place I was use to (Dell C800).
The Keyboard is relatively small. There is allot of room , it is a shame they did not make it a full size keyboard. As for the slight curve in the keyboard this is not an issue for me. As I mentioned before , I am a sql and UNIX guy not a touch typists. I will get use to it , but the size is somewhat disappointing.
Fan noise was noticeable when it did come on. No where near the volume or the frequency of my Dell C800 (think Jet engine air intake). When no fans are running machine is whisper quiet. HD noise is negligible.
Speakers are Laptop quality. Sound kind of tiny. But the are in the front so you can play music with the lid closed. There is an Equalizer program supplied. I did not play with this. As others suggested use headphones / external speakers / USB sound card if looking for quality sound. Max volume seemed a little weak as well.
Wireless card was impressive. Immediately it recognized three networks. My Linksys WPC54GS (802.11b/g card) would only pick up two most times (it could also be a new network set up). I have my WRT54GS WAP in the Top floor of a two story house. Signal strength was good to excellent on the main floor and same in the basement (approximately 50 feet?). I lost the wireless connection a few times when closing the lid, might have to do with power management (standby mode) or my router ¡V re-connected when I open the lid.
LAN connection worked as advertised. I only have 100 base so cannot speak to the Gigabyte speeds.
I like the LCD. Viewing angles are way better than the Dell , both from the sides and above. Plugged in LCd is very bright and display is crisp. Native resolution of 1680x1050 works well. Power Management for adapter has LCD at 100% and for battery power at 40% which was still viewable but a tad on the dim side in a brightly lit room for watching a DVD let¡¦s say, especially any dark scenes. While playing a DVD, I shook it up a bit , the DVD did not skip and I could not hear the drive spinning. The greenish Acer Desktop is a little much ¡V likely chance that.
Yet to test Bluetooth (might buy a mouse) and fire wire interface. I have a Sony D-8 camcorder . Thankfully it is the 4 pin (small) IEE1394 interface (which I have) as those cables can be freaking expensive (about $100 Cdn).
5 in 1 card reader. It figures I would have a Cannon camera with a CF card which is not supported (cannon sells soooooooooo few cameras) , the kids have SD cards so not a complete loss and I have a couple old Sony Memory Sticks I plugged the Sony MS in and Windows recognized it no problem.
Optical Drive
It can be a bit noisy. Nero benchmarks are consistent with advertised speeds. Installing a golf game (Tiger Woods 2005 ) after Laptop was on for 2 days steady , you could hear the disk spinning. No issues, just a bit of noise. And yes tiger woods golf everything on maximum settings plays just fine. Burnt DVD's at 4x and 8x , couple CD'S at 24 times all worked flawlessly

You can set ePowerManagement modes for AC & DC that won't switch off WiFi when you plug/unplug the adapter. You can also modify the actions performed on Lid Close and pressing the Power and Snooze buttons - I've set mine to No Action, Ask and Standby respectively, which suits my needs. I'm not on my 8104 at the mo, so can't confirm, but I think it's in the Advanced dialog within ePowerManagement.

Nice scoop - I did not see anything with Wifi but it stays on when I unplug the adapter - but the System Standy setting was gold as I tend to move from room to room ..thanks !

Just an Update - bought a Microsoft Intellimouse Bluetooth - confirmed that worked nicely (Acer Bluetooth) . Wanted an Logitech MX900 (I think ???) , but it was like 50% more $$$$
Bluetooth does not come on by default not a big deal takes about 3 - 4 seconds for mouse to wake up.
Only untested items for me to date is Secure Card (doubt I will ever use that / PCMCIA card (have no need ..yet) and Fireware Interface - I will be using this one with Cam Corder.
Also use dead Pixcel test - I am clean []

Daacon,
you seem to have lots of experience with TM8104[] I just got mine. I have been Acer user for many years. There is just one think that little bit bothers me, it is the "CPU-in-use" or whatever sound??? Very tiny like squelsh-electric ambience or something. I mean it is usual when computer is on, my old 803 had times when producing sounds like that. It is not lpuder than the fan and once the fan is on, one can barely recognize it, just was curious if this is the way TM works, or it is somethign strange.
Sorry if this looks stupid, just out of curiosity[8D] I mean I know that sound from my old Acer, nothing strange, so I do not think it is an issue, just this appears more often here. I thought the new one is mroe silent. It doesnt go to earphones, just out of the box[]

I like the extended warrenty , being able to buy it within the first year - if I have any issues I will purchase it , otherwise not.
<hr height='1' noshade id='quote'></font id='quote'></blockquote id='quote'>
In the UK (at least), if you want to take the extended warranty with the accidental damage option on a notebook, you have to do buy and register it within 90 days of the notebook purchase. I think the cheaper option (without accidental damage cover) is OK within the first year.

Well,
so do you think that this like squelshy sound might be a problem? I used to hear it at my 803, but here it is rather still on. It i svery silent though. Everything is working fine, just this ine sound thing...
[137 - No I don't have allot of experience with Acer about 2 weeks (on Tuesday [] ) - but I have been in the IT buisness for many, many years and have owned one other Laptop (Dell Latitude C800).
I am sure you will enjoy the Acer , I sure do. I do not hear any CPU or other ambient noise (other than when the fans come on). In fact that is one of the things I really like about this model ,is how quiet it is.
Yesterday the CD/DVD dirve was rocking bad and a really loud noise - ejected it , reset the CD and it has not made that noise since - maybe the CD was not quite all the way in not sure - will keep an eye out for that though.
I went with Acer this time as it seemd to me at least the best bang for the buck for what I needed. My only concern is reliability, but time will tell there I suppose. The Dell is 4 years old - still does it's job, just showing it's age. I would happy to get that kind of life out of this product.
I like the extended warrenty , being able to buy it within the first year - if I have any issues I will purchase it , otherwise not.

Ah Ok[

I mean it is not noticable, when the fan is on, so you know what I mean. Sorry I was just maybe too too sensitiveAnd it was quiet room without anything else..[
] It is definitelly not sound that would be scratchy or sharp or somethign loose inside. I thini it is just the whle power thing and the sound of simply having the notebook on living its life[
]
But thanks I almost got worried...

Sometimes you need to listen carefully just to hear it..it is not fan,as it is mor elike electric sound wth intesity changing according to tasks made on the computer. I think it is usual, I am just too sensitive on this baby, it is so gorgeous laptop...so I want it have all right[8D]
Does yoru work absolutely silent?? If no fan, than nothing only the control lights indicate if there is somethign going on? (when opening programs etc..?)

Well I have two other computers usually running in my office, a TV , a couple of teenagers , one who plays drums, a wife and a Dog [] so let me say that my Acer 8104 is quiet.
THe HD is diffenetly quiter than my Dell. Yes I suppose I could hear some HD noises if I shut the door in the middle of day with everything off and no one home- but generally yes I look at the hdd light to see if there is disk acess. There is not enough noise for me to worry about though , perhpas I am on the opposite scale than you and am too de-sensitized to noise these days []

Hey all. I have got the 8104. I just wondered if anyone else who's got it has tried using the platinum secure smart card software?
I have tried to run it fromt he desktop, entered all my information, entered password, then clicked OK and it says "please enter a card and try again" and thats all it keeps saying when u click ok even though there's a card already in there. So all you can do is cancel it.
I sent it back to acer and they repaired it, replaced motherboard and everything. Ran all the tests and everything is in working order according to them. Yet when I come to run the installation of the platinum secure software, it still doesn't work.
Just wondered if anyone else had tried using it and found any problems? Sorry to be so long winded, I'm not completely with it today :-s -
so does anyone know wher eI can buy the acer and try it out without having to pay a restock fee?
-
I was wondering if anyone had purchased the media bay battery or the extra 80 or 100 gig drive that fits in the media bay? I have not seen any prices for these options.
I ordered the ezdock but it must bne backordered. -
Just bought the Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer for Bluetooth from Amazon - hooked it up per the instructions and works great - [
] - nice having no USB connection to fool with - or any kind of receiver or wires for that matter - I'm now hooked on Bluetooth. Repsonse time and wake-up time are as equal to my Logitech USB wireless optical MX-700 mouse - battery life seems the same, too. The only drawback for me is the MS mouse is shaped really WEIRD - [
!] - and that's coming from a diehard Logitech user - having trouble getting used to it. Personally I would have bought the Logitech MX-900 mouse for Bluetooth - however I've read that it is currently ICOMPATIBLE with WindowsXP SP-2. Pricing on Amazon was the same, give or take, for the two. Would appreciate any other user's comments. Anyone want a good deal on a MS Bluetooth mouse? [

Quick question: i just learnt that some online retailers are NOT charging taxes while some others are? And to top that, some do in some states and not in others. does anyone have any experience with this?

thats what i thought.im told under the new ecommerce law or something everyone pays everywhere. I live in VA and CDW is in IL.
Did others who purchase from CDW pay taxes? -
As per taxes on online orders, my experience has been that it depends on if the online store is based in the state that the order is being shipped to, or if there is any sort of distribution center there. Wherever the business has a foothold has to pay tax.
I just bought/ordered my Travelmate 8104 through CDW, who does charge tax universally as of recently. However, Newegg on the other hand does not have such a policy, and their prices were lower, and did not hav tax (in Massachusetts). My account manager at CDW agreed to not only pricematch the actual prices per product (the notebook, the protection plan, and the $1500 guaranteed microsaver lock) but then came down as far as he could on their total w/tax to match Newegg's total price within $60.
Frankly, I was happy to pay the extra $60 to ensure that I had a real person to talk to if anything went wrong with the order, etc. I found that when I tried to call Newegg to doublecheck their dead-pixel return policy (listed as 7+ on the website, but CDW claimed that manufacturer (Acer) had a required 8 dead pixels for return), I was on hold for over a half hour, and finally hung up in frustration.
This is my first notebook purchase ever, and considering the Acer is nowhere to be found in any sort of brick & mortar stores, I wanted to be sure that I had a reassuring experience with customer service from whoever I bought from.
FYI: Travelmate 8104, the complete 3yr coverage plan (including ADP), and $1500 guaranteed Kensington Microsaver came to a grand total of a clean $2500 from CDW, with Newegg coming out around $2440 or so. Also, if you are looking to get the 8104 any time soon, Newegg dropped their unit price to 2199 just last week, so get them while they're lower than ever. -
My 8103 just arrived today. Got it from Buy.com with 2day shipping for 1850. An awesome deal IMHO.
Now its PLAYTIME. Going to do a clean reinstall and figure out how to get linux up and running on that thing (any help with linux h/w compatibility stuff with this laptop is really appreciated) -
Got my TM8104 yesterday, and am ecstatic with it so far! However I'm having a problem that I hope you guys can help me out with. I play World of Warcraft, and the game looks beautiful and runs smooth as silk! Well, for about 10-15 minutes before the laptop just turns it off. I mean all of a sudden out of the blue instantly turns itself off. I've checked system logs, and there is no record of a blue-screen system error/memory dump reboot, so I have no idea wtf is causing this!
I was thinking of updating drivers, but according to ATI I can't use drivers other than ones from Acer b/c it's a driverset specific to the laptop display, etc. How have others upgraded to the newest drivers? I tried to download the general Radeon Catalyst drivers, which pop up an error claiming "video driver not found", which I figure is its way of keeping me from using desktop drivers for the mobility chipset. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I know there are some of you WoW'ers out there! Help! -
Guys:
reporting that i received mine a week ago. thanks to everyone on this forum who helped me make up my mind. some questions:
1. How does one check for dead pixels?
2. I installed a brand new pc cillin internet security 2005 and since then it tends to hang on booting. i.e it hangs IE and when i go into START-OTHER programs it freezes! ANy ideas?
3. i did the dvd back up. ANything else the gurus out there can advise that i do or check? -

Acer has posted a new BIOS update "3C19" for all Travelmate 8100 series here:
http://support.acerpanam.com/synapse/forms/portal.cfm?recordid=2340&formid=3394&website=AcerPanAm.com&originwebsite=AcerPanAm.com¢ral=1&pupv=pu -
I was running BIOS ver 3c19 stock from the factory, and was having really annoying problems with the fan speed fluctuating between acceptably loud to incredibly whiny ever 30 seconds or so. I was also having problems with playing WoW (see previous post). However, thanks to some great help in notebookforums.com, I found someone who had similar problems and said that they had just upgraded to the newest 3c19 from their original 3c11, and said that 3c11 was far better for them. I installed 3c11, and wholeheartedly believe it was the 3c19 bios that was the issue. Best of luck! FYI: Newest BIOS's are not meant for everyone - only for those that were having issues. In my case, I had to *downgrade* to have my system work well.

Guys I have just received my brand new Acer 8104. I am a little disppointed for just one reason. It ismuch more heavier than my IBM T40. (I bought this for my aging mother who had a stroke sometime back and she cant seem to hold it because of its weight. I may just have to sell it/ return it).
I am grateful to everyone on this forum who moulded my thoughts and helped me buy it. I have some questions:
1)I see that the Acer support website has a new version of BIOS. 3C22. How does one install it? WHat benefits does it confer?
2)The sounds through the speakers have suddenly become very SHRILL. It is mettalic (when i boot up it gives a distinct CRACKLING sound during the bootup sequence)
2) I got the BLUE SCREEN "Beginning physical memory dump" THRICE!! Each time during running Windows Media Player- everything froze and a high pitched sound comes and then the blue screen error shows up. This shouldnt be happening in a brand new laptop. It has happened ONLY during running a particular VCD at a PARTICULAR point in that VCD.
3)I find every now and then the Wireless LAN, even when i am sitting right in front of the router, drops by itself. for no reason.
4)Lastly the machine heats up a LOT..especially AFTER this sound issue started occuring.
5) Initially i was able to use the S-Video cable and project the screen on my wide screen TV.Now when i try and do so, under advanced and display the option for TV is ALWAYS blocked out!
OTHERWISE ITS AWESOME AND WORKING VERY WELL.
ANY HELP AND ADVICE GRATEFULLY WELCOMED. -
Athreya:
It sounds like you have a genuine hardware issue with your notebook. I would suggest calling Acer tech support to see what they say, and they will probably ask that you send it in for repairs. FYI, try using BIOS 3c11. It keeps the fan at a much more reasonable level, while not a lot of difference in heat. I know people have also used RMclock instead of Acer's ePower management program to undervolt, which has also had some success in heat reduction.
Your audio/video problems sound like a true hardware problem, but perhaps try doing a complete recovery. I know that for some reason the initial Acer setup process for programs etc did not unpack correctly the first time, and I just did a recovery (from the hidden harddrive partition via Acer eRecovery, and it fixed a slew of problems for me. Also, RealTek has some new drivers for its audio chip (HD Audio). THe weight issue, unfortunately, is not something that can exactly be modded. However, if your mother does not use the optical drive, it can be removed and there is a plastic port-plug type thing that covers the empty bay. Also, if she is using it purely next to electrical outlets, I believe she can use the laptop without the battery which will also significantly reduce weight.
As far as a better choice for her, I would suggest that perhaps she doesn't need such high end components in her notebook, such as the Radeon X700 video card, which contribute to heat issues, as well as energy consumption which from logic requires a bigger (heavier) battery. Also, I know that the stock WXGA resolution is considerably easier for those with poor sight, and for this reason I actually got a lower-resolution monitor on purpose for my mother to use on her desktop. Lastly, no one ever claimed the 6.3 pounds to be easily portable, but justifiably light enough to pick this notebook over heavier behemoths with horrendous battery life and 17 inch screens and 1-2 pounds heavier. Just some things to consider.
Best of luck. -
thanks a lot. It never happened after that- i have been watching for 3 days now. THe error message that accompanied it spoke about some driver conflict of a new device or software installed recently!! The only software i installed recently was WIndown media player 10!! and Real player. Does anyone know if there are any patches for these?
Also can you please send me a link to the latest realtek driver? I cant find it online.
Im seriously contemplating selling it or returning it for it is TOO HEAVY for my mothers use. Its BRAND NEW (original box and everything) and i have installed Microsoft Offfice and Trend PC Cillin 2005 in it. -

Hey guys....I've just received my Travelmate 8103 from Newegg.com 2 days ago....everything works fine...i've installed an additional 512mb RAM and flashed my system to the new bios 3c22....HOWEVER my problem occurs when I play Warcraft 3 at the highest possible in-game settings. After 2 to 3 minutes, the computer just reboots. Did anyone faced a similar problem? Is it due to the overheating of the graphics card or CPU? Considerable heat is coming out of the vent on the top left of the notebook. Any help is appreciated.
