All,
IBM just announced the new lines of PowerPC 970 series processors (all 64-bit) -
1) Dual-Core PowerPC 970MP with 1MB L2 cache for each core (up from 512KB of 970FX series).
2) Low-Power (13W/16W) G5 970FX.

According to IBM, the new low-power PowerPC 970FX/G5 will consume as low as 13W for 1.3GHz and 1.4GHz and lower than 20W for as high clock speed as 2.7GHz. If that's true, then it'll give the Pentium M a run for its highest speed P-M 2.13/2.2 GHz that consume 27W.
Is it too late for IBM to announce this and Apple to introduce the "last" upgrade of G5 to its PowerMac G5, iMac G5 lines and a completely redesgin of PowerBook/iBook from G4 to G5?
It is more than 6 months before Apple introduces any Intel-based Mac systems, I hope Apple could use the new dual-core G5 in its desktop PowerMac and iMac G5 and the new low-power G5 in its laptops this Fall before the first MacTel products coming out around next Spring!

These chips were announced by Freesclale last September and I have been waiting for them to get compact, cool and powerful Powerbook. However, they had technological problems to produce these chips. Then the announced switch to Intel has spoiled my hopes to ever get my dream powerbook. Now, however ...

FreeScale is a spinoff from Motorola (which manufactured the old 68k chips for the first generation of Mac ...).
The G5/PowerPC 970 (FX, MP ...etc) CPUs have nothing to do with FreeScale; the G4, which now used in iBook and PoweBook, are made by FreeScale.
Please do some homework before saying something strange.
Back to G4 and G5. G4 mobile chips, now in 1.50GHz and 1.67GHz in Powerbook, consume about 10W, but they only support 32-bit computation. Most Mac/Powerbook fans are dreaming of Powerbook G5 with 64-bit computation and power just like those in PowerMac and iMac G5. The problems are the heat that cannot put them in the tiny space the the Apple laptops. -

Artwjp,
I meant this one:

In fact, a PowerBook with this chip and Mac OSX Tiger would be my dream notebook.
