Okay folks, put this one under the "You've Gotta Be Kidding Me" category. A company called Hip-E has released a notebook, except they don't call it a notebook, it's a "Nodebook".I guess that cleverly means it's just another communication node in your life or something? Well, Teen Magazine says the Hip-E Nodebook is "digitally hip: this totally new designed-for-teens-by-teens computer is da bomb". Hey, I know what "da bomb" means, that means "good". Right?

It's the Hip-E Nodebook, for teens and by teens, if parents are smart they'll avoid buying this and hopefully most teens won't have the $1599 it takes to buy it (view larger image of ad)

According to Hip-E this notebook, I mean, nodebook is"a portable hip-e companion to the hip-e node. Teens are always on the go!! so why not give them a reason to go in style. The hip-e nodebook has many of the same cool features and functionality as the hip-e node. From the bedroom to the classroom to wherever, the nodebook keeps up with a teens lifestyle."

The thing that pains me the most is that they put a 1.6 GHz Pentium M in this thing, what a waste of a perfectly good processor. Please visit the site, watch the movie and read their marketing flyer pdf for the pure entertainment value:

    Website: http://www.hip-e.com/content/products/index.cfm#NTBHINODE001

    Movie: http://www.hip-e.com/assets/hip_e.mov

    Ad Flyer:http://www.hip-e.com/content/products/specsheets/nodebookspec.pdf

    Specs:

    • hip-e hangout Customizeable Interactive Experience
    • Intel Pentium M 1.6 GHz processor
    • Sleek, ultra-modern, clean design
    • Maximum portability - only 3.5 lbs and 1.2 inches thin
    • Super bright 12.1" Wide Glossy LCD (1280 x 768)
    • Built-in, QuickSnap Camera for photos or video capture
    • Intel Centrino Optimized Mobile Solution
    • Next-generation, high-performance 1.6Ghz Intel Pentium-M CPU for max power and battery life
    • Intel 855GME chipset with integrated UMA graphics (64 MB of shared memory)
    • Built in 802.11 b/g fast wireless
    • 512 MB of DDR 333 (expandable to 2GB)
    • DVD player / CD burner combo drive
    • Huge 40GB hard drive
    • 6-cell Lithium-Ion battery (up to 5 hours of battery life)
    • Full size keyboard with Quick Launch ButtonsIntegrated 56K Phone (RJ-11) and Fast 10/100 Ethernet (RJ-45)
    • integrated card reader - SD, MMC and MS formats
    • Firewire (1394)
    • Headphone and Microphone In connections
    • TV-out, S/PDIF, RGB ports
    • PCMCIA slot
    • 3 USB ports
    • Fast Infrared and Consumer Infrared connections
    • Two stereo speakers with booming AC97 sound
    • Integrated microphone

And the price is $1599 for this thing. At 3.5lbs I guarantee it's made of pure plastic, you can tell by the picture it is. I don't think we need to wait for a review to know this product should be shunned like the plague. Sorry if that offendsthe teens that helped design it, but it was a nice try.

no doubt, it is of course a laptop. no doubt, it is overpriced.

and it absolutely is some of the silliest marketing i've seen in quite some time.

I saw an ad for this on the back of a CCS (skateboarding) catalog and thought I should at least check it out, since I'm in the market for a new machine (I'm tired of my 3 year old WinXP/Gentoo machine crashing on a daily basis), but I noticed that the site is more hype than specs, and I really had to dig for about 15 minutes before finding the information I was looking for. I think I'll stick with a Mac-- but the question is, will I notice the difference between the iBook and the PowerBook? I'm looking for a more media-oriented machine, but nothing too hardcore. Saving money is key, but if I'm gonna buy my first pre-built machine, I'd like it to be slammin'... if you know what I mean.
