Samsung showed the world it's serious about thinner and lighter laptops today when the company revealed its new and improved ATIV Book 9 starting at $1,199 in the US and available in the first quarter of 2015. The latest version of the ATIV Book 9 line now features an all-aluminum chassis with a cutting-edge WQXGA display (that's 2560 x 1600 pixels) and tips the scales at roughly 2 pounds.

I'm glad to see that, after the previous rumours of Samsung pulling out of the notebook market (which they have done completely in Europe) that they've realised that there should still be business opportunities at the premium end of the market.

We've been discussing this new 12.2" product in the Samsung forum for the past few days and remain baffled why Samsung continue to use a micro HDMI port instead of a mini DisplayPort which supports a wider range of display options.

The classic 13.3" Series / Book 9 also appears to be continuing with a model number of NP900X3K.

For those who want a touchscreen the Broadwell version of the 13.3" Book 9 (currently the NP930X3G) is in the pipeline with model number NP930X3K.

It is indeed good to see that Samsung is committed to delivering some impressive notebooks.

I really like the new 12-inch ATIV Book 9 and it compares nicely against the 11-inch Apple MacBook Air. However, the low-end Intel Core M processor and integrated graphics don't personally get it done for me.

There are a few minor things I'd like to see in a new 13-inch ATIV Book 9 ... like entry-level Nvida GeForce graphics for better gaming on the road and a better Core M processor (like the Intel Core M-5Y71 or M-5Y70) combined with a bright 13-inch WQXGA display and that nice keyboard.

Alternatively, if Lenovo added entry-level Nvidia GeForce graphics to a high-end configuration of the Yoga 3 Pro and BROUGHT BACK THE FUNCTION KEYS then I'd pay up to $1,500 for that as fast as I could press the "Buy It Now" button.
