Lots of details are surfacing on the Samsung's new CULV line up: Samsung X120, X420 and X520. It was John Ratsey who pointed out the new manuals available at Samsung.com. The news has been picked up by the guys at Notebookspot.nl and they found new details: http://translate.google.com/transla...ur-op-de-accu.html&sl=nl&tl=en&hl=en&ie=UTF-8

The notebooks will be based on Intel's CULV platform.
    X120 is 11.6" 1.36 kg
    X420 is 14" 1.7 kg
    X520 is 15.6"

CPUs will be the common CULV CPUs, like SU9400, SU2300 and so on.

I think the CPUs are fine for the X120 and X420, I question if somebody would buy an underpowered 16" notebook though. If you're buying a desktop replacement style machine, don't you want desktop power? Some might not see it that way, but I've talked to some notebook product designers that are baffled by some of their competition putting low voltage processors in desktop replacement style machines.

Anyway, thanks for the heads up Phil, these certainly look interesting.

The weight is promising too. 1.7 kg for a 14" with 9 hours battery life is very good.

yeah I def. agree with the weight.
I am looking for a 14 inch laptop in that weightclass but so far I only found the Lenovo T400s, which is way out of my budget as a student.

Hopefully more 14 inch laptops will appear with a lighter weight figure.

Agreed, 14" is my favorite size for a laptop and the thinner and lighter they are the better.

The specifications in the manual list the Core 2 Duo CPU as an option.

Configuration decisions lie with the various Samsung country sales teams to decide what to order from the factory.

1.7kg for 14" is attractive, although I assume that is without an optical drive.

Isn't that like .1kg less than the X460 which had a built in optical drive, and a nvidia 9200/9300 gs gpu? Not to mention 9 hours of battery life with the extended battery?

I thought it did, I guess I was thinking of the X360 with the extended battery. But, still the X460 had an optical drive and barley weighs more than this new model, and it also came with a nvidia base gpu too if you wanted more power.

I want to know what the X120 looks line seeing as it has a Core 2 Duo cpu. Plus that name is like the LG X120 netbook and their 15in model look a bit like MSI and Asus 15in device in that category.

They are ugly. The X120 looks like a Dell Mini since it has the big space above the keyboard which is the battery, and the touchpad buttons on the left and right instead of top and bottom resembles an HP Mini

I don't think they look very pretty either. But Samsung has usually very good build quality and keyboards. A bit better than Acer for example.

Come to think of it I am kind of surprised they didn't go with the island style keyboard like the X360/X460 have. Then again those do look way better.

In Engadget's photos, the X120 looks a little better, but I still don't like the touchpad buttons or the space above the keyboard. But I am glad to see that culv machines are almost becoming the new "netbook" in terms of so many of them being announced.
