Crysis looks "stunning" on Nvidia 8700M-GT notebook
(view large image)Crysis, the much-anticipated DirectX 10 first person shooter scheduled to come out later this year, reportedly runs very well on an Nvidia 8700M-GT-equipped Toshiba Satellite notebook (the X205). An excerpt from the article reads:
"This is what PC gaming has been waiting for. Running on a high-powered Toshiba Satellite notebook packing a brand new DirectX 10-capable nVidia GeForce 8700M GT card, it can only be said that Crysis looked no less than stunning. The top shelf graphics accelerator had no issue churning out the visuals and handling the game's physics; amazingly enough, all from a notebook. That alone makes Crysis, as well as nVidia's new cards, worthy of anticipation."
We will have a full review of the Toshiba X205 notebook posted soon so keep an eye on the front page.

Ooo, I think I found my new mouse.
-
I wonder how much smaller is than the normal VX? I've got that and I wouldn't mind picking this up it's not too much smaller. My hand cramps up if I squish it around many of the smaller laptop mice. But that dongle looks amazing. I'd just leave it on the laptop at all times.
Interesting about Crysis... I wonder what resolution and settings were used? -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
There is no word on what settings, but the resolution was 1440x900. -
this news is very comforting. All those who own 8600gts and better should be very pleased...
-
Perhaps the 8 series is finally starting to flex its shader muscle. It still gets outperformed by similarly priced 7-series cards in older games, but newer games like Rainbow 6: Vegas and Oblivion really love the shader power of these cards.
-
Great, first I hear nothing under a 8800gtx will play crysis well, and Im trying to buy laptop before september(amoung school adn such to play this game) and I hear that the 8700m wont be able to run it. So that means that people tell me to get the current top of the line mobile card, the almighty 7950gtx. Now that I was so close to buying my new gaming laptop(np5790) with the directx 9 card and this article arises saying I should wait for the directx10 card. Sweet
-
Me too
That looks like a really great mouse. I hope it gets the 1 year battery life like other high end Logitech mice get. -
I wouldn't bet on it. The VX Revolution I had currently states a 4 month battery life but I can't seem to get more than about 40-45 days with it. Yes, I'm using a fully charged AA battery (it only requires 1).
-
I recharge my Logitech mouse (new batteries that is) every month or so...and it is supposed to last much longer.
-
Running to buy 4 gigs of memory....turbocache here I come.................
-
Blah, the truth is that all the 7950 owners who invested in their cards only to see the Nvidia benchmarks proclaim the 8700m as the new top card are now a bit sore about it.
This article is just another example of more information coming out that shows the 8700m card to be very good and perhaps as Nvidia claims, the top mobile card out now.
Hopefully some new systems come out soon that use the 8700m other than the Toshiba one. -
There's no doubt that the 8700M is a good card, but whether it'll be better than the 7950GTX, even in shader intensive games such as Crysis remains to be seen. Currently, even games like Vegas and Oblivion where the 8600 series does well, a 8600GT still can't beat the 7950GT. (The 8600GT is very comparable to the 8700M GT and the 7950GT is very comparable to the Go 7950GTX.)
-
How about some new bluetooth mice logitech?
-
Does anyone know if the dongles for Logitech mice are generally backwards compatible? I have the current VX and I would absolutely pay for that adapter if it would work...
-
Crysis may *look* stunning, but how many FPS of stunning do we get?
-
That mouse is sweet. Not only about being able to plugit in, but that usb reciever. I have the MX, and the usb reciever sticks out about one and a half inch. I'm afraid I might break it off if I'm too rough with it.
-
WOO HOO! My 8600GT will be able to pick up Crysis and not explode! I have 4GB of RAM does this make it easier on the video card and better performance rather than having 2?
-

directx9 vs directx10 crysis, it seems directx 9 is missing the smoke effects and the rain
Even if the dx9 card can get a few more fps, Id rather take the dx10 effects over a few fps any day -
Yeah, I was glad when I read the news about Crysis and the 8700M.

I dont think you will notice much in game as your running for your life
If it was just a few fps difference sure I think we would all take the dx10 version, however all dx10 vs dx9 benchmarks and test so far show dx10 to be nearly half the frame rate. When a notebook is already probably right at the border line for playable fps with good detail settings in dx9, I think that pretty much takes dx10 out of the question/picture all together.
Another benifit of dx9 is that you should be able to play in xp instead of vista and that can net you a good fps boost too. Over time everything will change im sure but thats just how things are for now.
As for the mouse... I may get that! I really wish they would just do bluetooth... or atleast come out with some good bluetooth mice (macbook pro people probably want this even more so) but I guess usb must offer some significant performance difference for them to stick with it so hard. I like full size mice, esp for gaming, but if I need something to shove into my little notebook bag just so I can avoid using my touchpad, I think thats going to be the best bet. -
I felt some lag with bluetooth mice.
-
where did u hear that? crytek has said previously that a single 7800gtx will run crysis fine. that is a desktop card... i think the 7950 will be able to do just fine in dx9 mode...
The article on bootdaily described the game as running smooth... so apparently 8700m gt can run crysis in dx10 at 1440x900 with decent frame rate... the truth will be out once the NDA is lifted...
on a side note, looks like dell is adding wireless usb as an option to 1720 soon?!!... maybe they will throw the 8700m gt in as well?
where's 8800m nvidia? let's hope that when it comes out, dell doesn't just limit it to the xps... -
Nice mouse! Anyone know the dimensions? Been looking around on the net, including Logitech's own site, but can't find them.
Hopefully it's smaller than the VX200. -
WHOOHOOO for cryisis....now i feel comfortable buying another notebook instead of waiting for another year !!!! Time to fill out the FAQ soon
-
I saw a thread in another forum where someone reported that Dell Korea printed catalog already mentions the 8800's as an option in the 17" inspirons , a hoax ?
Regarding crysis , I really don't care much for this game other then a benchmark . Just recently played Farcry and wasn't to impressed with the gameplay and AI , those eye candy games seem to me more as game engine sales promotions then real games . -
LOL, i guess they need a Vickers machine gun(designed in 1912) to do the job

How bout a minigun like arnold used in terminator 2, those things really do cut things like cars in half.
-
I guess im just one for eye candy over a little fps any day. I was playin double agent on my 360 the other day and I usually didn't finish stuff cause I was too busy oggling at the water and stuf, so mabye I should go the extra mile and get the 8700.
-
I think the smoke and rain etc makes a big difference in atmosphere, and directx10 optimized games will run just fine. I think theres a diff between a game deigned for dx9 with dx10 functionality added vs a game optimized for dx10.
eitherway, i'll be getting it for my xbox360
, im sure the 8400gs will run it at low-med settings, its probably not that great of an experience on a 13 inch screen vs on a big screen on the xbox.
-
The 7950 will still be a stunning choice for a graphics card, and remember it's a proven commodity, whereas at present we only have the word of the designer/manufacturer and the salesmen+pro review game sites on the 8700's performance.
-
And comparisons of the Desktop 8600 GT and 7950GT.
I don't care that I'm gonnna be playing this in DX9c, I WANNA SHOOT TREES! TREEHUGGERS BEGONE! I AM YOUR WORST NIGHTMARE! -
Stupid Dell's underhanded tactics and their lousy DDR2 Geforce 8600GT coming with my Inspiron 1520. I really hope it doesn't screw me out of being able to play Crysis
.
1520 arrives in 9 days!
Here's hopin' I still get to play! -
its windows exclusive.
-
So the 8600GT cant handle Lost Planet Demo, but can handle Crysis? im confused.
-
Can someone clear this up for me, were sayin that crysis is designed to be directx 10, or its a directx 9 game with directx10 features and bonuses?

Crysis stopped impressing me as soon as that EA logo got slapped on it. I'm sorry but I've been deceived by EA so many times that I'll probably end up skipping Crysis. I'm sure it'll look nice, but that's about it. All the focus has been on visuals, which are nice, but they don't add to the longevity of a game.

Why does DDR2 memory automatically make your machine not good for Crysis? Understand that DDR2 is going to give the same performance as GDDR3 at the same clockspeeds. The advantages with GDDR3 are the smaller manufacturing process (less power usage), and the ability to reach higher clockspeeds. So, you have nothing to worry about.
It can handle Lost Planet. Crysis is simply very optimized for PC. Lost Planet is a horribly coded port from the Xbox 360. It runs terribly even on the 8700M-GT laptop I am testing.
It is both - it has two modes. -
Hopefully an overclocked go 7900gs at least equals an 8700m (minus directx 10). I would love to be able to play Crysis at Medium High-ish settings at 1440x900 (my external monitor res).
-
wow, truly brilliant, kudos to crytek (knowing 90% of the population has directx 9)
Thanks Chaz, and hows that toshiba x205 testing in games so far, is it performing up to what it was cracked up to be? -
i know what you mean but EA isnt making the game, they are only publising it so we dont have to worry
. Yes i know i told you some great news just now haha
.
-
I think some people on here are exaggerating DX10 a bit and Crysis too. I mean...exactly...most people don't have DX10 systems or Vista. And of all the people who do have DX10 systems, how many of them will have an 8800 Nvidia card or an ATI 2900 HD?
In it's final build, the game will be aimed at specs designed to cater to sales and not to the hugely small % that has the hardware for the game. If they want to make money, they have no choice but to make this playable on lower end DX10 cards and of course DX9.
You have nothing to worry about.
And even then, Crysis is simply a benchmark. How many games that you actually WANT to play will require such extreme graphical output? I mean for me personally, maybe an FPS on occasion, some RTS games. There are only a small handull (literally you can count them on one hand) of games that come out each year and push the system. -

I am getting more and more impressed with every game I play. I ran FEAR Combat at 1440x900 with full settings and AA enabled with 60+ FPS. Very impressive for a card that has a 128-bit memory bus if you ask me. More details to come in the review when it's posted later this week, hang in there.
-
One Word For Crysis:
WOW!
-
I like one word reviews. Sh*tsandwich for example. (believe me it's not at all meant to be offensive, Spinal tap)
-
I love the idea of the small USB-receivers.
Hopefully they'll be able to incorporate that design into other wireless devices. -
Speaking about the Lost Planet Demo, there are many bugs in the game. The newly released complete version has all of them cleared up though.
-
wow... this is good news... im especially waiting for Chaz's review, unless he could answer this directly which would be sweet!
wat im asking is since im buying within the next two weeks, i must ask, do i go Dual 8700s or 7950s, this thing has to last me four years of college, its gonnna be a D900. I assume Dual 8700s will hold up VERY well if ONE 8700 is doing as well as you have shown Chaz. So shud i go for the dual 8700s and be future secure with good fps as well? or go the surefire top of the line 7950s and worry if DX10 makes it big in the next 4 years? wat do you guys think? -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
I would definitely go with dual 8700Ms if possible. Note that there is no word on availability with the D900C yet though. For now the X205 is one of a kind.
-
thank you very much chad
i've been contact with a few companies by fone, and alotta of them are updating their sites so within the next 2 weeks it will include the 8700, these SHUD include PCmicro and Avadirect to say the least, but... we'll just have to see if this comes true! can't wait to get my laptop!! Dual will surely handle Crysis if one is doing so well
