Apple admits to MacBook discoloration issues

It was recently reported by certain Apple MacBook users that their white MacBooks were becoming a grungy dirt color faster than you would expect on the wrist rest and touchpad areas. Initially Apple claimed this was due to users not properly taking care of their products. However, according to website Softpedia.com, Apple has now admitted some MacBook notebooks have manufacturing issues with the plastic and users should contact Apple Care via the www.apple.com website in order to resolve their issues.

Best Buy and Office Max to eliminate mail-in rebates onlaptops -- instant discounts only

Due to overwhelming amounts of customer complaints and problems Office Max announced today that it would end all mail-in rebate promotionson hardware products such as notebook computersstarting this Sunday. Best Buy has also decided to end all mail-in rebates within two years, notebooks have already been eliminated as having mail-in rebate promotions. Sources at both companies indicate that mail-in rebates are "not a consumer-friendly strategy" and too many complaints arise from delayed rebates. CompUSA and others have indicated they will likely follow the same path in eliminating mail-in rebate promotions. Instead, these stores will offer instant rebates only. Which is good news for most consumers.

Intel's new integrated chipset, the GMA X3000

Intel's new GMA X3000 has many improvements over the current GMA950. It features a programmable pipeline versus the GMA950's fixed function pipes; DirectX 9 features such as Pixel Shader 3.0 and Vertex Shader 3.0 are also supported. Vertex shaders are hardware-based, unlike previous Intel graphics cores. Hardware T&L is a vast improvement over the previous software-based solution. High-dynamic range (HDR) is yet another advanced feature to be supported.

The graphics core will be clocked at up to 667MHz, higher than the solutions offered by ATI and Nvidia. The video capabilities of the chip are still limited to VGA, but HDMI, DVI, UDI, component, composite, and S-Video can be added through the SVDO port or an expansion card as was the case with the previous GMA900/GMA950. Intel ClearView technology will provide smoother video playback for both standard and high definition video alike.

There are at least two different graphics cores. The consumer-level G965 Express will receive the GMA X3000 graphics core, and the Q965 the GMA 3000. The difference between the GMA X3000 and the GMA 3000 is that the 3000 lacks Intel's Clear Video Technology.

A comparison between the 945GM (left) and the GM965 (right).

The most interesting feature about the GMA X3000 series is the programmable pipelines - all Intel needs to do in order to support advanced features such as Shader Model 4.0 (to be introduced with DirectX 10) is to update the microcode.

The G965 Express is expected to launch the last week of July with the Core 2 processors; the Q965 Express will be in the first week of September with Intel's vPro Business Platform.

Intel asks makers to clear out Sonoma CPU inventory

Intel is asking notebook manufacturers to support its plan to clear out Sonoma Pentium M processors.

Intel is offering quotes for the processors at the level of Celeron M processors, with clients including Dell, Hewlett-Packard (HP), Acer and Asustek already purchasing P-M processors in the hundreds of thousands of units per maker at this price level, the makers indicated.

The inventory issue has been resolved, with the inventory level in Europe falling to less than ten weeks. The move to clear out Sonoma CPUs also indicates that the Yonah processors are interim products.

With current Napa-inventory also under possible threat from price-cutting caused by the approaching Merom models, the makers are hoping that Intel will consider lowering its quotes again, otherwise notebook demand may remain dull.

Mini Toshibas, how cute. ^^; How can the M500 compete with the SZ without dedicated graphics? ...Am I reading this wrong.

I hope Apple fixes the discoloration problems with the MacBook. That does look nasty.

The Quaddra TX2 looks so much like an MSI MS-1036. Could this signal the coming of my notebook, the MS-1042?!

on the MIR's, the problem is, when the company stops offering them, they can't give you as good of a discount. You would be shocked how few people send those things in, last % check for my company was 31% (given, that is all products, not just computers).

My company, which will remain nameless, has a pretty good system for rebates and the overwhelming majority of customers get their rebate check without problems. Given, if its an instant rebate then you cannot tax that discount like you can a rebate, so you get a smaller discount but lowers the taxable ammount on your bill. But, that still doesn't outweigh the difference in discount.

I may have over analyzed, but to sum it up: if you send in your rebates and the company you deal with is reliable, you are paying slightly more in the end. If you hate dealing with rebates and often forget to send them in, its great news!

    Just my 2 cents...

    Heh, if I had a dime for all the times I've had or heard about problems, so called miss understanding or had my mail in rebates sent back to me with 'return to sender' stamped on it, after following correct procedure (My favorite story is one involving getting rebare for Nortain Antivirus somewhere back ther last year) I would have more money than was credited to me when I recieved the rebates. o.o;

I was seriously considering the macbook but there are just too many little problems with it that I don't want to deal with. Plus, all those Apple apologists and fanboys really pissed me off. If anything, it was their attitude that Apple can do no wrong.

Your analysis is a good one. If you figure 50% of people actually send in a $200 rebate on a notebook then the total revenue for the retailer is

    (price of notebook * number sold) - (50% * number sold * $200) = revenue

now they'll adjust it so they have the same total using the following formula

(price of notebook * number sold) - (100% * number sold * $100) = same revenue as above.

In other words, those that religiously filled in rebates should realize they'll get less back this way (in this example $100) because a store will make sure sales numbers and intake remain about consistent. If you were ever lazy about filling in a rebate, you're better off -- which is apparently a greater amount of the population!

Reading the specifications of the x3000, it seems intel has finally realesed a card that can game. Will this card be comparable to a x1400/go7400, given the fact it supports aero for which you need at least 128mb just like the x1400/go7400 has. And it supports shader 3 with the promise of even more.

w/o dedicated memory I think the new intel gfx will still be below the 7400/x1400.

The issue isn't so much the GPU. The problem is the lack of dedicated memory, as the GMA X3000 is forced to draw from the much slower system ram.

In other words, it's not going to be in the ballpark of the 7400/x1400.

    2. the notebook is over 1 year old .
    3. its a Dell ...

    Think doomed .

although the x3000 may not have any dedicated memory, given the fact that it's more programmable(?), will it be able to support directx 10 and therefore making it more futureproof?

Weird. The chart states the specs of the GMA X3000 for the Merom (mobile) line of processors. Shouldn't the Sonoma platform come out Q2 2007? Why does the article say the mid July? Sorry, just kind of confused here.

Actually, Apple has not admitted to the discoloration issue. There was a report that they acknowledged the issue and stated the porousness of the plastic caused it to absorb oils from the skin, but this was unsubstantiated. Apple representatives have stated that the company is still investigating the issue and Apple has made no official acknowledgment of its existence. However, users with stained MacBooks are encouraged to call AppleCare which is replacing the damaged notebooks.

For X3000, the spec is quite good, but i think Intel should add 'only' 128MB dedicated memory in order to compete with other low-mid end dedicated GPUs( X1400/7400).
