Intel Pentium Dual-Core?

No, I'm not talking about the Pentium D. The Intel Pentium Dual Core T2060 is a new and unannounced Intel chip that has been mysteriously showing up in budget notebooks offered by mainstream resellers such as Best Buy and Circuit City. The T2060 is not on Intel's roadmap; similarly, neither were the budget Core Duos (T2050, T2250) and Core 2 Duo (T5200).

The T2060 has the following specifications:

• 1.6GHz clockspeed
• 533MHz Front Side Bus (FSB)
• 1MB L2 cache

Despite the resurrection of the Pentium naming, it is this author's belief that the "Pentium Dual Core T2060" is little more than a budget Core Duo T2050 with half the L2 cache (the T2050 has 2MB). I would estimate performance to be less than that of the T2050, and on par with the AMD Turion X2 TL-50 (1.6GHz/2x256kb L2). How much of a performance loss the reduction of the L2 cache will incur I do not know. However, I do believe that the the performance difference between a 1MB and 2MB L2 cache would be more drastic than that between a 2MB and 4MB L2. Either way, considering that the T2060 is a budget notebook processor, I doubt the customer buying it will be too concerned with performance; it should have plenty of power for a regular users's needs.

With dual core is becoming more affordable than ever, the days of the single-core processor are becoming more limited in PCs, and the widespread availability of cheap dual core computers will speed up the process.

Retailers to offer special promotions for Vista launch

In typical Microsoft fashion, there will be a number of promotions to push a new operating system out the door. On Tuesday, January 30, retailers will offer customers freebies with the purchase of Windows Vista.

DailyTech has a list of retailers and deals offered by them here.

In addition, you can see current deals on Vista loaded notebooks, some of which cost less than $700, here. And don't forget, those with Vista laptops get free WiFi at Starbucks until April 30th, see details on that here.

Suppliers increase notebook component inventory in preparation for Vista

Suppliers are increasing their stock of notebook components to be ready for the potential increase in demand from clients after the launch of Windows Vista. Inventory of the end-user market remains at normal levels however.

Windows Vista graphics drivers for ATI cards released

ATI on Monday posted the final release versions of its first Windows Vista certified graphics driver on its website, Catalyst 7.1.

ATI says that the driver includes native support for OpenGL under Vista, which will result in a performance gain over its previous RTM driver. Users will also be able to playback Blu-ray and HD DVD media in the 32-bit version of Vista. A third-party media player is still required for playback though, along with an HD LCD with an HDCP chip and a Radeon graphics card with an HDCP chip.

Nvidia is preparing a Vista driver for release on January 30, Vista's launch date. It will replace the Nforce RC1 driver package.

When I click the deals link in the other post to Amazon, it says: Sony VAIO VGN-N220E/B 15.4" Notebook PC ( Intel Pentium D T2060 1.6 GHz Processor, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, DVD RW Drive, Vista Premium) Black . Typo?

No...just a new budget processor. They are reviving the Pentium name...now it'll be the new Celeron of the Core (1/2) Duo.

I think the pentium brand name sounds better then core 2 duo and more people will identify with it. I also noticed at intel they have a celeron M 520 that runs a 1.6 ghz but has EMT64 support they also just released the celeron M 450 @ 2 ghz previously only availiable to europeon markets celeron M rocks WOOT!!

Ah, the mystery of the Pentium Dual core is revealed. Thanks for that, Chaz.

I was just at my local Best Buy the other day. They have a large area just waiting to be filled with copies of Vista. Not really front and center though, come to think of it.

You know, considering the Pentium Dual-core has a quarter of the L2 cache of a Core 2 Duo, its performance may be kind of meh, but I imagine its power consumption and heat output are probably pretty stellar. Cache can contribute a lot to heat; how do you think the old Celeron A's overclocked so fast? ;)

Is the Pentium a 32 bit processor? Or 64 bit?

I would most likely say no.

They're probably just T2050s with half of the cache disabled.

Seems to be of the Core Duo family (not Core 2 Duo) descendant so 32-bit

Ya, I posted this also just yesterday for someone, BUT at that time the t2060 was in the list, noting half the L2 cache.. Now it's mysteriously GONE! ..

I smell another scooby doo mystery coming.. start up the mystery mobile.. we're goin ghost hunting! YOINKS

oKAY, THIS is getting weird.. I just clicked back on the link... It's reappeared... with the 2mb cache instead of 1mb.. who's playin with wiki?

Official specs of the T2060 still seems to be shrouded in mystery. While some sites state the processor to only have 1MB cache, others claim it to have 2MB. Heck, nobody even knows if the use of the Pentium brandname is indeed correct. According to digitimes ( http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20070130PD214.html), the model number of the new Pentiums should be along the lines of E2000, not T2000. Is the T2060 an upgraded version of the T2050 or is it more lowerend? Is speedstep and VT enabled? Apparently nobody has a single clue.

Hmm.. the CPU still looks promising regardless. Especially with Vista Home Premium pre-installed, value laptops now look as promising as ever.

Yes, but as far as I know, the 'E' labeled series are for desktops (as are all Core 2 Duo chips).

I hadn't read of Intel's plans for mobile Core processors other than the Celerons that would be based on the Core microarchitecture.

It's most definitely a typo. Sounds like Amazon got confused by the naming of this Pentium Dual Core too.

It really is a confusing CPU. I wish Intel had some info on it.

I was already not pleased with that I was going to end up with a T2050 processor because that is what is in my price range, but now the T2060 is perhaps even lower than the 2050???

How can we find out how much cache it really has?

If you guys had to make an educated guess, what would you say?

I'm 99.9% sure that the Pentium Dual Core T2060 has 1MB of L2 cache, as the majority of sites are reporting it as such. It wouldn't make sense if it had 2MB, because then it would have the exact same specifications as the Core Duo T2050.

Same here.

It seems odd Intel would keep such a low-level processor hidden in mystery like this.

This pretty much proves it:
http://www.toshiba.ca/web/product.grp?lg=en&section=1&group=1&product=5611&part=6096#spectop

It's 1MB L2 cache all right. Still though, I'd have to say it again. What a value. Considering the toshiba is a little more expensive and that the similar-speced Compaq C506 is only $799, who'd in the right mind would even consider getting a gaming laptop? Well, maybe for people who go around a lot, but other than that, you can buy a decent gaming desktop and still have money left over. :p

Are we positive? I'm skeptical. It will probably fly in dual-core situations, but what about its single-core performance?

So I figured.

Pretty much a T2050 with half of the cache disabled.

Odd name Intel gave it, however.

Exactly a Core Duo T2050 with 1/2 the Cache. I picked up one of these processors for personal use. While no power house by any means, it does work remarkably well in single threaded situations, and obviously the multi-tasking isn't bad. I'd like to see it head to head with the T2050, outside of gaming situations, it might not be too much a performance/watt decrease. Here is a shot of the CPU-Z showing that it is identified as a 2050, BUT the specification says 2060.

Thanks for the confirmation toxigenicpoem. We've been hearing a lot about the Pentium Dual-Core T2060 around the forums and it appears it is quite the performer for the money.
