For those who haven't heard the news or read our forum threads, Nvidia has announced its latest and highest performance DirectX 10 mobile GPU, the GeForce 8700M GT.

Packed with the same 32 stream processors (unified shader engines) as the previous generation 8600M GT, the new 8700M GT boosts the core clock from 475MHz to 625MHz. The shader clock has also been increased from 950MHz to 1,250MHz and the memory clock has increased by 100MHz (from 700MHz to 800MHz). The memory bandwidth is up from 22.4GB/s to 25.6GB/s and the texture fill rate provides an impressive 10 billion instructions per second (up from 7.6 billion instructions per second in the 8600M GT).

Nvidia is also touting the fact that the new 8700M GT can accelerate the entire H.264 video process, making it easy to play Blu-Ray, HD DVD, and other 1080p-native movies on a notebook without siphoning away CPU and memory resources. However, the same HD video processing performance claims can be made for the entire GeForce 8M series notebook GPU lineup.

While clearly an evolution in the right direction, the new 8700M GT is essentially a higher-clocked 8600M GT. This is great news for gamers looking for the best performance available, but only time will tell if this is worth the upgrade cost for current owners of the 8600M GT.

Hooray for mobile gaming! I think it is better for new buyers who would have been looking to buy the best

    One more step...

man, i was expecting something better :( i expected it to have atleast 48 to 60 stream processors....this, this is just an overclocked 8600mGT ........i hope the 8800m's have atleast 96 stream processors....but the way things are looking now...they might not :(

this might be worth it if the prices are not sky high

I'm waiting to see the price too. As deedeeman says, it's really just an overclocked 8600m -- if the pricing is $250+ over the 8600m I'd wonder if the upgrade is worth it.

So if it's just a OC'd 8600M GT then that means stock 8600M GT's must OC like crazy and still be stable. Or is there something I am missing?

is there any way that this could be on a 15.4 inch laptop?

8600M GT can fit in a 14.1", so I would believe so.

i bet the 8600m gt's have a huge amount of OC capability. a ceiling fan above the notebook was enough to give it idle temps at full load in my macbook pro, when i just clocked it to the nvidia recommended.

I wouldn't be surprised if you could OC the 8600M GT to run at 550:1000:700 without extra cooling; only considering if the 8700M GT is just an OC'd 8600M GT.

This definitely means the OC'ing potential is there for the 8600...you could probably even OC the 8700 a little more too. Just break out the cooling pad before you do that, and read our Cooling Guide to take as many precautions as possible.

Was going to ask if its so , on the bright side the new 8M cards seem to have a great potential .

I guess Nvidia is going to squeeze the 8600 a bit more till we see a real bump in the performence segment in the form of the 8800s ( and probably 8900s soon to follow ) .

At the moment, the notebooks that ave been announced are 17" models. It may be possible for manufacturers to install the graphics card into a smaller chassis, but it would depend on the thermal output, and power consumption. If early report of 35 Watts are anything to go by, then it could be difficult to get the card into a 15.4" chassis.

I think the New ATI line is going to crush the Nvidia DX10 line.
I more excited about ATI cards coming round, they give better battery life.

Its just a matter of waiting. Its very difficult to predict which will do better, because of such massive differences in architecture. Its likely, however, they perform similarly, with ATi doing better in some games, and nVidia in the others.

Wasn't the 8700GT suppose to have some kinda dual-128-bit thingy?

It does have a "dual-rank" 128-bit memory bus, but its doesn't offer much of a bandwidth increase. Simply put, its not as good as a 256-bit meory bus, which would have been far more useful, on such a graphics card.

Manufacturers are putting the top end processors in 17" laptops, but the growing trend is to 15" and even 14" laptops.

Who ever puts one of these in a 14" is gonna score big with gamers looking for portability.

well, speaking of clocks i'm glad i made up my mind to buy a 8600GT instead of the extra over-clocked 8600GS which is just an exagerated 8400GT card (same # of pipelines and same 128bit memory interface, just huge clocks). it's not a miracle how the 8600GT can stay so relatively cool in a so un-vented environment like MBP's :)

There are currently only two. The Clevo M570RU (Rock Xtreme 770) and the Toshiba WXW. Its expected that some more notebooks with this graphics card will appear in the next few months.
