It seems like almost every notebook PC manufacturer has decided to announce an "Ultrabook" (a 13-inch thin and light multimedia laptop) this week. Toshiba America is the latest company to join the fray; Toshiba today unveiled the Portege Z830 Series, the company's first Ultrabook using second Generation Intel Core processors.

Looks like an awesome machine.
I would have been just as impressed if they called it a "notebook" though. -
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
its great looking and it appears to have the same specs as the other, lets hope that the battery life is good

I'm just happy that most of these 'ultrabooks' doesn't have the tapered pointy look to it. Definitely on my list to look forward to.
So is the fingerprint reader optional or standard or depending on the model?
Some things I want to know are how it handles heat and what screen resolution. -

Screen resolution is in all likelihood 1366x768; most of the announced ultrabooks are listed as having an "HD" display, so 720p. "HD+" is 1600x900.

Imo, an ultrabook has to have something special from intel. An exclusive processor perhaps? After all, "ultrabook" came from intel.

They have to use an Intel ULV.
I personally think ULV's are pointless nowadays. Battery life differences are minimal except under continuous load, which probably won't occur away from an outlet. The reason ULV exist still I think is because Apple needs to make their MacBook Air and its too ridiculously thin to dissipate heat from a SV CPU. Intel doesn't want to only have one customer for ULV chips, so they have to get everyone else making laptops thin beyond practicality. -
Hah... I was just thinking of screen resolution (yeah it will probably be 1366x768 like most other). I wouldn't call that resolution ultra even if we were 1990ies. (Maybe ultra-low.... lol.) The design looks neat although I am not too big fan of these ultra-thin laptops.
I see the point about ULVs, but don't really agree all the way. If they can make the laptop produce less heat, why not. Its not like the average consumer needs an Intel Core i7 Extreme for multimedia, web surfing and office work.
Also curious whether the "Hi-Speed Start Technology" is just UEFI + some trivial Windows optimizations ? -

UEFI?

I like this one the most of the 4 I've seen (Asus, Acer and Lenovo being the other 3).
It has the best keyboard layout - dropped cursor keys, dedicated Home/End/Page row - and the most ports (yes... even the soon to be floppied VGA port).
I just with these ultrabooks had higher resolution than the crappy ubiquitous 1366x768. That one factor may swerve me towards the Sammy Series 7 with the 1600x900 rez (although I would prefer a 14" 1080p).
At least Tosh remembered to add the backlit keyboard which they've not done in their last 2 Portege notebooks. -
The 4-ultrabook comparison video on ThisIsMyNext shows the Toshiba as being really flexy.

Seems like there's a lot of smudges on the ASUS one. Similar material with my ASUS 1018P I would presume; brushed aluminum?

im also interested in toshiba.. any updates on when it will be out... i was going.. i think asus and lenovo is priced way to high.. and acer cut on quality
