Upcoming ASUS N10 Netbooks to have Nvidia 9400M
    [IMG]
FCC documents have revealed four upcoming models of the ASUS N10 netbook, some of which will have integrated Nvidia 9400M graphics and HDMI for connection to external displays. Several models will also feature WiMAX.

Yeah and apparetly one is called the X10j i wonder if thats the real name of the successor? From what ive seen the 9300gs that was integrated was better in performance then the ones with the ion platform...

The 9400M should be faster than the 9300M GS; it has 16 processor cores vs. the 9300's 8. Also, it has a 128-bit memory bus vs. the 9300's 64-bit. Those are very significant differences.

I'm guessing that the 9400M will consume less power and be cheaper to produce vs the 9300.

the distinctions between netbooks and notebooks continue to become blurrier and blurrier.. especially the pricing

i didnt realize the 9300 only was 64 bit.

But i saw some guy on this site I think it was htwing he said he got 1800 3dmark from his N10j but the test i saw of the ion was only a 1200 3d mark.....i guess we'll have to wait it out.

    NBR's review of the N10J produced a score of 1,417 3DMarks running at 1024x600.

This review of the Nvidia Ion reference nettop produced a score of 1,195 3DMarks running at 1024x768 while only using one core of the Atom 330.

i would guess the atom is holding back both of those results. I have a laptop with the same 9300m g as the n10j except its in a core 2 duo and i get 1800 without any overclock. i would bet the n10j would get similar if oced to 2 ghz. the only way we will know the ions true power is when it comes out on something that is not on the atom holding it back. also im guessing the ion will produce less heat making it possible for a overall better overclock and end result.

This is really great news, any boost in power is welcome, just one question, when are they coming out?

Netbooks were supposed to be a cheap alternative to notebooks, with emphasis on cheap.. Remember how it all started out? Asus trying to make a prototype for the One Laptop Per Child project ..

Well to be fair, ASUS claims the N10J is NOT a netbook.

I've heard from some users with macbooks that the 9400M integrated is not as good as a dedicated GPU. Would that make any difference since the 9300 is a dedicated graphics card?

The N10J is a netbook. An extremely powerful and expensive one, but a netbook nonetheless, just because of its size and Atom processor. I could even agree that it isn't a netbook if it had the dual core Atom 330, but saddled with the same N270 1.6GHz single core unit that every other netbook is using....yeah, its a netbook.

The integrated 9400M probably can't compete with dedicated performance GPUs like the 9500M GS and such, but it should be faster than the 9300M GS, because, as Chaz said, it has more processing units and double the memory bandwidth.

Yeah it probably is by our (honestly speaking: obscure) definition of a netbook. But just saying, ASUS claims the N10 is not a netbook, while their EEE PC lines are netbooks.

Synthetic benchmarks for the dedicated card might score higher for the 9300M GS because of factors like dedicated GPU memory but I expect game performance to be better on the 9400M.

I don't know what the core/memory/shader clocks are on the cards, which can make a potentially significant difference. Also, so can the memory type.

Mmmm, I don't think its obscure...a more technical definition, perhaps, but that only makes it more precise and thus, more correct.

The N10J is a notebook for the same reason that the Sony VAIO P is a netbook. Similar to Asus, Sony claims that the P isn't a netbook. Who are they trying to kid?

I haven't looked up the exact differences too, but I think they were going by 3Dmark scores, so I'm not positive on this.

What I mean is that everyone has a definition of what they consider a netbook, and over time it just gets contradicted. Some people prefer a 10" or less a netbook, until they come out with a 12" atom. Some people consider an atom a netbook, but then low-processing speed P4 or celerons were not considered netbooks.

Others think a netbook has to fit the criteria of low price and small screens, etc. Imo, ASUS/Sony didn't want their items to be called netbooks because the term in itself "net"book is a generalization that presupposes its value and creates false dichotomies. If you can get decent fps on a game, even better than bigger ultraportables, is it still called a netbook? It is obviously a marketing term used to attract a majority of non-laptop buyers, but I think the term is just useless.

Does it really matter what category it falls under, overall it's going to be a nice, powerful little system,I just hope they bump up the screen resolution a bit.
And if anything I think it competes with the much more expensive ultraportables in performance but has the size of a netbook, the best of both worlds. ;)

    That's a 16 processor part, right?

Wow...IF these prices were reasonable, ie no more than $400 intro, this would be really cool. Even better, a dual core Atom and 16 processor Nvidia GPU for $400...something that could actually run low end stuff and almost function as a computer.

Oh, and NONE of these are netbooks as it turns out :D There hasn't been a netbook made since '03.

    They're back to being sub-sub-notebooks.

Well, the 9400M is faster than both of them, but remember that these machines are held back by a 1.6GHz Single core Atom.

Why don't they use the dual core version of the Atom?
I know that the power needed is four time higher, but...

Because Intel won't let netbooks use a dual core Atom. BTW, the 330 dual core Atom is just two single core Atoms stuck together, not a true dual core. Even when Pineview, the next gen Atom, comes out this fall, netbooks will still be limited to single cores.

But we won't have to worry about Pineview bottle-necking the Ion's 9400M because Intel won't let Nvidia build a chipset that supports it.

The performance of the 9400 depends on the type of memory used. The white Macbook scored around 1750 in 3dmark06 with ddr2 memory according to the review I found in the forum. This result is not very high compared to my notebook with standard clock even though is pretty good compared to other integrated chips.

Also, the dual core Atom has a very inefficient cpu power to power consumption ratio compared to a Core2 and even an Atom. So it is not very good and they chose not to use it for this purpose.

Yea.. But Intel doesn't realize that, according to the article, that there are people who want more gpu power (by sucking more power) than what the puny Intel IGP solution can do. I think Intel gets the idea of ION but they just don't like it coz it'll be biting a big bite into their IGP pie.

This has just turned into a pissing contest now, but this I do know, if and when the ION platform does come out(hopefully in the new N10J)I will be getting one.
But it does have me thinking, maybe the new N10J won't have the ION platform, just a discrete 9400 M with a ATOM like the current N10J with switchable GPU's, if that's the case here's hoping they also upgrade the ATOM with the 280.

Just in the business since, because if there were dual core Atoms, than that would take sales away from Core 2 machines even more than netbooks already are.

"Completely owned" wouldn't have been how I described Intel's actions. Intel made themselves look the fool with claims that the 9400M is old tech, and that consumers do not want better gaming and video performance in netbooks.

It also seems Intel may have tripped up a bit using references to press releases that they did not have permission to use. Fudzilla for example claims that they never gave Intel permission to use one of their articles and that news site is upset that Intel did so in order to bash Nvidia.

it seems to me to be honest that for some reason intel doesn't want nvidia to get a piece of that pie.......

Lol @ 9400m being old tech thats pretty funny i hope AMD is doing something during this time.
