Windows 7 to Help PC Shipments in 2010
According to a DigiTimes report, Windows 7 is expected to help boost PC shipments in excess of 10% when it is launched in 2010, on top of the negative 5% growth this year. Desktops, followed by netbooks, will benefit most; strangely enough, notebooks are not supposed to gain much from the OS.

This prediction makes no sense on any level... neither businesses nor personal computer owners will be motivated to buy new hardware in this economic climate; and an improved version of Vista won't change that.

Switchers I tells ya, switchers!

No one will buy just to upgrade to Windows 7, but people who are planning on buying anyway will wait till Windows 7 comes out to buy.
-
Yeah if anything it seems that the imminent release of Windows 7 is causing people to wait on purchases until at least a "free upgrade" period from Vista to Windows 7 begins.

Really? Do you have a link? Cause I need to buy a laptop for university later on in the year, even though I'd like to wait for 7.

Cool! So this is from Microsoft then? It looks like they are going out of their way to make things easy for people to upgrade. Which they are gonna have to do with the massive PR problems they've had with Vista.
Thanks for the link! -
Many of the things I'm reading are saying that if you purchase a computer with Vista near the beginning of July, you'll be able to get a free upgrade to Windows 7 when it comes out. Does anyone know if it'd be possible to get a free upgrade to Windows 7 if I order a laptop without an OS and use a brand new copy of Vista Ultimate that I have sitting around? (After Microsoft is allowing free upgrades) Or does the actual computer need to be purchased with Vista?

As previously done with the XP/Vista migration: users will (most likely) only get a free upgrade if they purchase a new computer with a new copy of Vista during a specific time window. Any other user (including yourself from what I can see) will have to purchase W7.
