Hi everybody,
As I installed STALKER, I experienced a quite boring issue: my IFL90 just shutdown after 2 or 3 min of playing, or even if I'd just let the game in the main menu...
To solve this issue, I try many solutions:
- to run with just the battery plugged.
- to run with battery and sector
- to run just with the sector
=> Result: no change, always shutdown after 2 or 3 minutes.
I'm wondering if it could be a overheating shutdown, a GPU problem...
Thanks by advance for your advices!

try to clean notebook`s vents
-
Youp,
You're right, maybe it could help, i didn't clean the vent since 1 years
I'm gonna clean the vents, i'll let you know if the shutdowns are still happening!
Does a Bios upgrade may help to solve those shutdowns?(My version of Bios is the 1.07...) -
Re,
After cleaning my vents, i was able to play for almost 10 minutes, before the shutdown...
Without stress, the GPU temp is 74°C;
With stress, i think it increases over 90°C (and more i think, i'm testing with rivatuner and Notebook Hardware Control) )
F***, I don't want to invest in a lap cooler :'( -
Ship it in for repairs, mine does the same thing without a cooling pad. Can't play any games without it bombing out after a little bit. Nvidia can reimburse your maker for selling faulty parts!
everyone wins!
-
The shutdown is not related to the current problem of Nvidia but the 74*C while idling is way to high... What drivers are you using? Do you have the AC on?
-
For the GPU, i'm using the drivers 6.14.11.7570.(i downloaded them here )
Most of of the time, the AC is on. But I tried with just the battery, and the lap still shuts down...
In the fresh morning, the GPU temp is 59°C.
I checked the evolution of the temperature while playing, and the temp increase of 2 or 3 degrees in 2 or 3 minutes and will have continued if I didn't stopped.
I was able to play for 1 hour yesterday, but i've been blue screened T_T
Stupid windows and nvidia drivers xD
Do you have an idea about what could I do? -
Are these new temperatures you're posting for after you've cleaned the laptop?
Also, you might want to abstain from placing the laptop under heavy load until you've remedied the heating problems. -
Yes, these temperatures are those after cleaning the vents. I've put my lap on 4 books to get a better circulation of fresh air, it seems the temp is a bit fresher ... Even if it's not a long term solution, i can use it for a while, waiting for another solution xD
-
What are your cpu temps? One thing that you could try is reapplying thermal paste on the gpu, but I'm not sure you can do something like that without losing your warranty in the process =/
-
The cpu temp is actually of 55°C, after many hours of using. As my laptop is still under warranty until next summer, I'll wait for a while before reapplying thermal paste; i sent an email to my reseller - i'll see wha they will told me.
Anyway, thanks for the advices -
Since your CPU temperature seems normal, it must be your GPU that is at fault, in which case there's a good chance you can qualify for an RMA.
-
Yep, i've sent an email to the customer service and i'm waiting for an answer. I'll let you know the results!
And thanks for the advices! ;o) -
Fzappa,
I can GUARANTEE you that is your GPU ... and let me guess probably an NVIDIA 8600M GT ...
I had the same problem with a Brand new laptop (Compal JFL92) ... turn on the laptop Temp at 50's C ... in about 10 to 15 minutes tops I am sitting at 80C ...
I would NOT open it up and apply Arctic Silver ... like somebody mentioned ... you will be out Warranty.
You don't want to spend $50 or $70 for a cooler then go to Wal-Mart or some store like that an pick a cheap 4" or 6" Personal Fan and set your laptop off of the table by 1/2" and blow air under it and leave the fan on ...
and use HWMonitor 1.10 (last version that I had) to monitor your Temps instantly ... gives HDD, CPU & GPU Temps all at the same time and is non-intrusive program and you can run it alll the time ...

Thanks gwonk for your confirmation!
Just a question for a detail: is this overheating problem linked with the problem told by Nvidia about faulty Nvidia gpus? Because if no, there is no point in spending $ to send back my laptop to the customer service)
I'm using Notebook Hardware control, to monitor the temps, in order to have a log of temp evolution. ^^
I'm wondering if a Bios update could help in my case. What do you think? -
Hi Fzappa,
I remember seeing that 8600M GT cards with a specific Revision (might have been A2 ... but don't hold me to it) ... had the problem ... but others with different Rev. also have been posting problems and laptops going black ...
Anyway, there is a ton of Threads on this forum that is talking about this probelm ... just hit the "SEARCH" button above and "NVIDIA Faulty Cards" or something to that effect and you get a list of articles ... here are few ...
BUT ... if you are still under warranty .. I would definitely call your Reseller and see what they can do for you ... and what they can replace it with ... may be a good batch of GPUs ...
Look at this thread 31 pages and going

Man I thought it was only NVIDIA G84 (e.g 8400) and G86 (e.g. 8600) that were bad ... now reports of even NVIDIA 7xxx being bad ... this is BAD news ...
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=281989
And now more Chipset (G92 and G94) reported Faulty ..

Anyway ... not exciting news ... sorry!
