[Info] Battery lifetime

Just wanted to let you know that my well-treated 6-cell battery for the 6214W died after 16 months of moderate use (~3 cycles a week). A bit disappointing (I hoped to use it the usual two years) but that's the way it is.

Battery lifetime can also vary from battery to battery. Not every battery dies at the same point

 

I'm looking to buy a 12 cell battery for when I need serious battery length (well, serious relative to the laughably low 6 cell battery life :x).

Odd that it died so early, I'm not used to notebook things, how long should you expect one to last? How does it 'die'?

 

Well, it runs like 20 minutes which (for me) is comparable to a dead battery.

LiIo batteries usually last about 500-1000 load cycles which is about 2-3 years (that's what you can read everywhere and that's what I've experienced so far). Maybe it was just a bad batch.

 

most notebook manufacturers only give .5-1 year warranty on batteries. this is indicative that the failure rate after 1 year is fairly high. in the end, it's somewhat the luck of the draw.

edit: another thing to consider is that batteries deteriorate faster in the presence of heat....so if your model is one with a high powered gpu, that may have contributed to it.

 

I have found that recent notebook lithium batteries do last as well as the ones made in the previous century. I bought my first lithium-powered notebook in 1996 and got a spare battery for it. However, the original battery was still in good condition when I sold the notebook over 3 years later.

It is possible that more recent batteries have been optimised for weight, capacity and manufacturing cost. Sony provide a utility for the G11 to stop charging the battery at 50% or 80% (or 100% - user selectable) in order, it is claimed, to prolong the battery life.

Samsung's recent batteries seem to be designed to last about 13 months from start of usage - there have been several cases of major / total loss of capacity just after the 12 month warranty is over. My 6024W's battery has lost about 20% of its capacity in the first 6 months. Replacement Samsung batteries are nearly as expensive as Sony's. At least Zepto's battery prices are reasonable.

That's true.

I'm pretty sure notebook batteries last as long as manufactures want them to last. We are little cash-cows.
