My 6130hs is a little over a year I bought it on 9/18/2004 at 3:01 PM and it's still running strong but there's a few scuff marks from putting it into my notebook backback but other than that it still looks good. I don't see any dead pixels and I haven't had to do a complete install of Windows XP. Which is a good DVD writer to replace the lite on in the 6130hs?

Same here! I've had mine for almost a year with no problems to report (knock on wood). My battery life is pretty much the same, about an hour and ten minutes depending on what I’m doing.

As for a replacement DVD drive, I personally replaced mine with the NEC ND-6500A. I like this model because there is some hacked firmware for this drive that enables bitsetting (changing the booktype of a DVD+R to DVD-Rom). There’s a newer version 6650 that burns RW and DL media a little faster (not sure if there’s any hacked firmware for this model though!).

    Link to the NEC ND-6650A.

Link to a pioneer model that seems good too! This one is slot loading.

Theres a couple of ideas for you, hope that helps.

    Funny thing, that battery...

I came into this device knowing it was hard on batteries, so I hardly even use it unplugged. Most of my work/study is done at desks with AC access, so it's never been an issue.

I think i'm going to help beta Vista on it soon. I'll let folks know what busg I find if I do this.

I don't think I'll be buying another one either. Around every 2 or 3 months or so, something happens whereby the HD transfer rate drops to 3MB/s max. I have to do a factory restore, and everything's OK again (for a while). For some strange reason, I think it might have something to do with the DVD drive - I'll be playing a DVD on WMP, which will crash, the DVD drive will keep whirring and the computer locks up. When I reboot, the HD problem occurs. I've never had anyone offer me anything near an explanation, and Averatec just keeps telling me to send it to them, which I can't do as at the minute there's no way in the world I can do without my laptop for so long.

Also, the DVD tray refuses to open sometimes, and then again sometimes it refuses to close. Having had laptop problems a-plenty in the past, I babied this one, almost ridiculously so, and it's been very frustrating to see so many problems nonetheless. I think my next purchase will be a Thinkpad or something like that. Avaratec gives you great bang for your buck, but I just don't think they're made particularly well.

Finally, someone with the same problem. It took a while to figure out what exactly was making my computer run so slow. I don't understand how the hard drive could just partially break like that. I had the exact same transfer rate after some indeterminable point. After dealing with it for a couple months, I just went ahead and bought a new hard drive. Problem solved; even faster then before.
