Interested in your thoughts since we might be offering a 15.4" Santa Rosa notebook with a WUXGA screen.

If I were in the market for a 15.4" laptop, yes I would prefer a WUXGA screen.

Perhaps.. I've always preferred WSXGA+ screens on a 15.4" laptop LCD... Haven't ever seen a WUXGA 15.4" in person.. but I feel it would certainly be much better than WXGA/ WSXGA.. CAD applications would be the ones to benefit most..

I don't think I'll like it, it'll be way too big for a small screen like a 15.4".

For me, no, unless it had a more powerful GPU than the 8600m GT. Even if it did, that would probably make things too small for my taste.

1920 x 1200 would be greater than 1080p, as "1080" refers to the number of vertical pixels in an image, so it'll be slightly stretched and not at native.

It is not fair. So many good choices for 15.4" laptops and 14.1" laptops have such crappy options for screen resolution. If you want WUXGA resolution in a 15.4" laptop, then you can choose between an HP business laptop, D830 or T61. But no 14.1" laptop offers WSXGA+ resolution yet.

That's because no LCD makers make a 14.1" WSXGA+ screen. There are standard 14" and even 12" LCDs with SXGA resolution, however.

what good is hd video if the dpi is way off so you can't see a difference anyway unless sitting REAL REAL close?

I guess the whole point in HD is to make it look good on big screens. Correct me if I'm wrong ;)

Anything crappy looks great on tv, you can get 400x300 films and they will play nicely on standard PAL/NTSC tv-sets and you'll be like, wow, cool. While on the laptop it's ICK, pixels.

It's all about total resolution and screen size, dpi ratio.

Anyway, to answer, no way would I get anything higher than WSXGA+. I guess, because I have not seen a WSXGA+ screen on 15.4" yet. So maybe that would nothing higher than WXGA+ ;)

    Cheers,

    //m.

I use a WUXGA 15.4" laptop. I can't imagine anyone using it heavily and liking it. I can see the pixels fine, but I have to remember to look at far away objects at a relatively high frequency, or I start to feel the eye strain.

WUXGA for a 15.4" is something that i definitely would love to have - yet i have only seen WUXGA only once, and on an HP of all laptops, haha. I am so used to WSXGA+ on my 15.4" and 21" that I look forward to the increase inresolution

Too high, unless you have an insane graphics card. The only prob with LCDs is that you must play in native resolutions (all the other resolutions just look AWFUL...it looks like blowing up a web thumbnail into the size of a normal photo) OR windowed mode. Windowed mode would be fine, but you still need a decent card to handle the hit that windowed mode does for your system when gaming.

I had a friend that had an old HP with this resolution, it was insane on a 15.4" screen to have that much real estate...but you'd better have the eyes for it!

I agree that it would probably be best to have WUXGA with a 15.4" Widescreen with a med-high end graphics card. In today's market, probably an 8600GT or higher... at least if you plan on using the high resolution for graphics/HD video.

Yeah, to ammend my earlier post, I would only really consider a 15.4" WUXGA for my work lappie, not for my gaming lappie. At least not until they got a 256-bit card for a 15.4" chassis, since I really do like to game at native. For gaming I think the perfect screen size/resolution/gpu combination would be a 14.1" WXGA 8600mGT.

This would be a deal-maker for me (end my hesitation and cause me to purchase the notebook).

If it came with a powerful GPU and if I were to be using it for games CAD and PS, then yes I would most likely get it.

Do you really think spamming your Poll really helps your case? How about leaving it alone and let people vote the way they want to instead of trying to skew it to make it look the way you want it?

Or, I guess it is ok to live in Fantasy Land.

I have a WUXGA 15.4, small text is not an issue with me. Change some Windows and browser settings and you can make it perfectly usable. Very rarely do I find myself straining my eyes.

Like others stated though, don't expect to game at the screens native resolution. That's just too many pixels. My next computer will have a WSXGA screen which looks to be the better compromise.

But hey, just because some people wouldn't go for it doesn't make it a bad idea at all. It's nice to have choices. Most "name-brand" manufacturers aren't that nice.

Who's spamming the poll? Anyhow, this is really good feedback. We are not expecting more people to go for the WUXGA screens, but we do know that there is a market for it. We are looking to fill more of the high end whitebox mobile segment. We will have a unit reviewed for you all soon.
