Did you try removing the second 256? And do the specs for your lappy state that it can handle 1Gb of ram?

If there's a notebook out today that cannot handle at least 1 gig of ram, then I am shocked and appalled.

perhaps you are not getting the ram chip in fully and it is only partially connected. Or there could be the chance that the ram is faulty.

from memory, i think my toshiba satellite pro sp2100, would not take 2*512MB either. or 1*1GB. Maybe it would not handle 1GB or maybe it could not handle a 512MB module.. It has 512MB in there at the moment, 2*256.

I too would be totally surprised if this PC wouldn't handle any combination of proper memory up to it's max. My 7100 came with one 512 GB SoDIMM. Not nearly enough to do much of anything especially with video memory eating part of it up.

I put in a 1 GB stick next to the 512. It now shows up as 1.5+GB. I suspect you have a defective 1GB mem module.
