Hey guys, I'm new here but you seem very knowledgeable so I was wondering if anyone can give me some advice! I bought the 3200 model from Future Shop. I want to use it mostly for school (I'm in University).

I really like almost everything about it... EXCEPT the fan. It is tres loud. This kind of vvvvvvroooooooooooommmmmm whenever I turn it on and it will stop for a little while and then start up again. Sometimes it'll only stop for as little as 10 seconds and then the fan will be on for a long time. It's not bad when I'm just at home but when I'm in class it is really disruptive. Is there anything I can do to change the setting? I understand it goes on when it gets hot but I wish I could make it do it QUIETLY. Any suggestions or help would be AWESOME. Thanks in advance!

When you boot your system, hit delete when the averatec splash screen shows up. This should get you into system settings. Be careful inside these settings. On the second page or so, there are a couple of calibration routines for fan and battery. They'll take like a half hour each. Make sure your notebook is sitting on a typical surface in a position you would be normally using and start it up...go have a cuppa coffee or something...

Let us know how it affects it. I haven't taken the time to do it on ours yet, I just found out about it a few days ago myself. But people who have used it say that the notebook runs cooler and quieter...

    EDIT
Also, depending on the processor you have (athlon or sempron) there's a couple powernow! drivers at AMD's site that may be of help. I don't know offhand how to tell if they're installed already or not. This is her old one (2200, athlon 2000+) and I won't experiment until our 3270 is back together - my wife needs her notebook for classes. Nothing in the programs list or device manager says "PowerNow!" explicitl, though.

    I bet you my 6100 is louder.. [ :D] its got a P4.

Would it be possible to change the fan in this notebook to something quieter? It would definitely be something worth looking into.

    Cheers~

HUGE THANKS to rustskull! I followed your instructions and well it still makes a sound (I'm thinking this is unavoidable with this model [ :(!]) it's definitely quite a few notches quieter, and I might be able to actually bring it to class without disturbing everyone.

    Thanks again!!!

    Hey all,

I've been experiencing loud fans on my Presario R4125, and have been trying to figure out how to get it to quiet down. I've been to sites that say to take out the fan and try to lube it up to get the mechanics working smoother. That's a good idea but alot of people are not going to go thru the trouble of doing this, I am one of em.

So I tried to find a way to internally from an application, try to quiet it by using some of the software that it provides. My laptop comes with AMD's PowerNow! feature, where it distributes power to when you need it and controls how much voltage of energy your laptop needs. So I was trying to look for this application. Need less to say, it was as simple as going to my Power Options and choosing the different Power Schemes.

To access this go to Start --> Control Panel --> Power Options

So choose the right one you want. My laptop was running loud like crazy on "Portable/Laptop", and when I chose the "Minimal Power Management", my laptop immediately quieted down when I hit apply.

So yeah, give this a try and see if this helps. I like having the little power icon on my system tray and changing the Power Schemes on the go for when I need to boost up the processing speed.

I hope this helped. Let me know if it worked for you. :)
