Hey all.. for the past couple of days I've been having problems connecting to the internet through my Ethernet. I know it's not a problem with my DSL, because I hook it up to my desktop and it works fine. It started after I downloaded some software (DownloadStudio, Imesh, BitTorrent, etc.). My laptop's new so I just got around to downloading these. Anyway, I was on campus (using the free wireless), playing around with the Firewall settings because nothing would download properly.

I get home.. and all of a sudden my Ethernet stops working. I'm still "connected", but no web pages will load. So, I figure it's probably due to my fiddling around with the settings... so I restore all Internet Explorer settings to their default... and I still can't connect to any websites.

Finally end up calling Averatech just yesterday. The tech told me to go to control panel and delete the driver for the wireless and restart. Now amazingly, everything works again. So I'm happily surfing away... but today it happens *again*, so I have to delete the driver and restart.

Has anyone else experienced this? I'm a little peeved that my new laptop is flaking out on me.

You say you are connected but cannot access anything? What happens when you try to renew your IP address? What connection speeds are the networks you're using running?

For the record, I have had an Averatec 3255P1 since 08/04, and I've never had any problems with the drivers for either the wired or wireless interfaces.

Basically, I can't access any websites even though there's nothing wrong with the connection. It's not a problem of speed... it can't connect to the website no matter how long I wait.. I just get the standard error page.

When I click on repair wireless, it tries to "renew IP", but it just hangs there and nothing happens until I click cancel.

It works fine though after I uninstall the driver and restart the machine. I'm wondering if it might be because my machine is overheating? I've been using it a lot lately...

Probably not a heat problem. I've left mine running inside of briefcases and whatnot and had no problems.

The speed I was referring to is not about waiting, but rather the speed of the network architecture vs interfaces. Sometimes compatibility issues arise. Back when Dell was just starting to roll out its D series Latitudes (and 802.11g was new) I was working for a place with an 802.11b wireless network, and some (but not all, I hate the D series) of the D series wouldn't connect to the network until the wireless interfaces were set manually to 11 mb/s. Sometimes wired connections don't work because a NIC is configured to operate on 100 mb/s full duplex and the intermediate networking hardware is 10Base-T.

Darkhorse- If i'm reading your post correctly, everything was fine UNTIL you downloaded and instaled software, then ran into problems? That would lead me to believe the progs have fubared you system. Not incredibly suprising...Imesh trashed one of my home pcs some time ago (buggy POS).

So on that train of thought i would suggest a few things; uninstall each prog and test your connectivity...see if one prog is causing the issue. If that fails, do a system restore to a good setting. If that still fails, and seeing that your lappy is new, you might ant to do a complete reinstal of the OS...maybe something deeper in your settings or drivers has pooped out.

I personally would never install Imesh...its loaded with spyware and other crap. Everyone I know that HAS used it complains of something funky soon after using it ( and its a pain in the butt to get all their junk fully removed)

    Good luck!!
