I have been waiting for the unofficial forum to get up and running again as I remember reading about this somewhere.......
NVM
OK, this usually happens when I come out of standby. I open the lid, hit a key and my 3200 fires up. Then, after a few secs the screen goes black.
I can still see the desktop, so its the backlight thats at fault.
The only way to remedy, is to reboot. If I reboot as is, the same happens, so I have to wiggle the screen b4 I reboot.
It sometimes happens on first startup too, but usually its after coming out of standby.
Sure, loose connection, but it doest fire up black, it goes black after a few secs.
I opened her up and unplugged the screen at the bottom, re seated the connectors etc.
Still got the same prob. Sure its there is the problem.... Will open her up again, but would like some advice/experience first please.

Maybe the back light is broken.

If, when you move the screen back and forth makes it come back alive, it has to be some connection in one of the wires running from the lower part of the case up to what is in the lid.
-
no, as I said, it will only come on again if I reboot. Also usapartiot, its the backlight, but its intermittent, it doesnt happen all the time and comes on again once I've rebooted.

This problem is ongoing for me. The way I "fix" it is by reseating the connectors to the LCD. This generally has kept the backlight consistent for 2-5 months until the problem reappears I have to do it again. I have a 3270.
It's fairly easy to get to the connectors.
1. access the screws in the four corners of the screen bezel by removing the rubber pads in each hole.
2. remove the 4 screws at the corner of the screen.
3. pry and pop off the front plastic bezel around the screen. (It can be unnerving at first, but I haven't broken any of the clip points yet.
4. there will be circuit boards at the base of the screen. reseat the two wire connectors there.
5. snap bezel back on, screw in screws and restick the rubber pads.
ideally that should do the trick at least for a while. There may well be a better fix and better directions, but let me know if this works for you or you have any questions. -
When you say reseat, you mean just unplug & replug back in
I've tried that already.
I'm sure this is the root of the problem, but what is the permanent solution?
Is it because the wires move when opening the lid, can I superglue them in place....
drives me mad! -
Yeah, that's what I mean. Sorry it doesn't work for you. I don't know the root or the real solution. I assume it's the wires moving with the hinge motion, but I don't understand why putting the computer into sleep mode and back on resolves it temporarily. I didn't use glue, but I did apply a quick scotch tape "fix" one time and it did no good.
My solution will be to buy a new computer in the next few months, though I will continue using this one as well. -
with your laptop. If it only happens with the LCD, you can concentrate the problem to LCD.
Black screen is different with Dim screen.
-Black screen: nothing can be seen, just simply a black screen. A screen is black that means no signal is fed to the screen and inverter. A bad or loose LCD cable may be a source of this problem
-Dim screen: images on the screen are hard to see unless using a flash light.
This case, the inverter or backlight is bad. However, inverter is the most likely the source of problem. Inverter can find on Ebay around $30. After replace inverter, dim screen is still the same, the backlight is bad. This one is more difficult to replace since you have to open the whole LCD to replace the backlight which is located at the bottom of the LCD. Backlight bulk can find on Ebay around $30.
In short, there are two connections from LCD cable to the LCD, one is for signals or images, one is from inverter to light up the backlight bulk at the bottom of the LCD.
Without inverter, you will have a dim screen. Without a connection which feeds video signal, you will have a white screen because the backlight still light up.
I have to explain in detail because I'm not clear what you meant of black screen: simply a black screen or a dim screen. -
beut, glad to see you here ... do you know that someone has started up another unofficial averatec forum:

doh! mine has been acting up like crazy lately. I've had to open the display and repressure the connectors every other day for the last week. Well, yesterday I must've done it a little too hard (I generally squeeze them) and the connector that was soldered to the board popped off (right side). Maybe it'd been a week point lately and that's what was going on, but now useless until I figure out how best to fix this.
Any ideas? (as an aside, I'm planning on diving into macland with a MBP, but was biding my time for leopard and possible spec bumps.) -
Try disconnecting the two wire power connector at the inverter board, put a TINY drop of WD-40 in each hole, and reconnect. Has been working for a while now without a problem.

Well, I seem to have sorted it.
I opened the screen up & superglued it all in place etc, but to be honest the main difference is now I NEVER put it in standby by closing the lid. This is where I seemed to always get problems.
I changed the prefs to "do noting" when closing the lid.
I put in standby with the Fn F4 key. I can then close the lid fine & it all comes back on again after. Not had the screen cutting out for months now. whoo-hoo -
Mines died on me, when I was using it.
there was even a piece of the screen of the lid, that broke off, and I had to tape it together.
3200 series black screen again! (backlight)
