On this brand new 3250HS, the volume controls are at max to get what I would say is "barely comfortable listening volume" even for the startup and exit sounds.
I've downloaded the audio file on Averatec's site but as far as I can tell, without actually installing it, I already have the latest audio file. In fact the audio file they have for download has a slightly lower number than the one that the notebook came with.
Any thoughts on this?

Get a good pair of headphones. Most laptops do not have good speakers.
I know things, things that could get me killed

Yeah, I agree headphones or other external speakers are the only solution. I have a 3255P1 with the same "problem" (although it's endemic to all laptops, as zazonz said).

did you try the volume controls in windows? and there may be a separate control for the volume somewhere on the keyboard. make sure that is turned up as well.
