So I went to staples today and took a look at one. Looks like they have a pretty good build quality after inspecting it fairly carefully. They remind me quite a bit of the apple ibook series. It is too bad that I was not able to see one fired up.
So I did a little bit of research and it appears that the amd version has a much inferior integrated graphics chipset. That is too bad since I would prefer the 64 bit processor over the centrino. The 4100 series uses the SIS 760gx which supports up to directx 8.1. The intel one is clearly superior.

I just purchased the Averatec 4265 and have been pleased with it so far (just few hours playing with it), but just now I read the user manual and it says the battery is only good for 300 charges. I'm a student so I use and charge my laptop everyday. So in 300 days I'll have to buy a new battery for this laptop and the warranty only covers the batter for 6 months(180 days). I called Averatec's customer service and they confirmed this. I'm returning mine tomorrow. I'm not going to buy a new battery every year. That's ridiculous.

Most Li-ion batteries are designed for 300 cycles anyway. A cycle is a full charge AND full discharge
so if you start with 100%, got down to 50%, charge to 100%, and finish to 25%, that's only 1.25 cycles. -
Really? Only 300 cycles? I was expecting more. I'm a bit disappointed by that fact. Is there a program that can tell you how many charges your battery has left?

Does anyone know of any comparable notebooks by other manufacturers? Same weight, features and price range? I want to compare but there are so many models out there...
-
sony makes a 360 & 460 model with 13.3 LCD .. difference = 460 has DVD burner .. priced 1800-2000 every now and then a 200 rebates ..

does dell make anything?
-
No, they only make one with a 12 inch screen. Not with the size of the Averatec 4000.

Dell has the 700m which is 4.1 lbs and 12 inch screen. Using coupon codes I priced at ~ $1000 including shipping (no tax) configed as follows:
IntelĀ® PentiumĀ® M Processor 725 (1.60 GHz/400MHz FSB) 12.1-in WXGA
80GB HD, 512MB RAM, upgraded to 8 cell battery
To me this seems like a better deal then the Averatec. Other than the AMD 64 Bit and maybe a little smaller....
I still may buy Averatec, just weighing my options... -
Averatec just changed the availability date from May to July for the 4100 series.
4000 series first impressions
