Ugh... what a sick noise to wake up to.

My girlfriend kept asking me this morning what this funny noise was, and being half asleep, I thought it was a bird. It sounded sort of like a bird, but a very strange one. I heard it a couple more times and then jumped out of bed because it was coming from my laptop!

I put my ear up to the hard drive and I heard it spinning up, then it went silent for a bit then *CLICK*, and repeat... I couldn't get it to stop, so I turned it off by holding the power button, then turned it back on. I don't know how many times it clicked, but I would estimate at least 5. Windows took about 3 minutes to load.

I just ran an error/damage test (tests sectors I believe) with HD Tune 2.10, and it found no errors. The SMART page shows OK across the board, but obviously something's up, so I ran a benchmark as well... minimum 1.7mb/sec, maximum 2.6mb/sec!!! (Could be why Windows took ages to load!) I also ran one on my external 20gb in a USB2 enclosure, and achieved 13-15mb/sec results, which is about normal.

Needless to say, I'm worried. It could go pop at any time. I've had a laptop drive fail on me before, but of all times now is the worst being that I can't just ship it off to Averatec. I backed up mostly all of my important stuff already, but still have a bit to do. The computer has really slowed down. It's painfully slow when copying since it maxes out at like 2000k/sec when transferring via FTP.

What a crappy thing to wake up to... but at least it works for now.

    Dude back it up asap!
It may be time for a drive upgrade and it would be faster than waiting for averatec. If you put in a 7200 now maybe averatec will just ship you a new drive and you can put that one in a USB enclosure.

    Thanks for the advice.

This thing just doesn't want to die! It's been kicking ever since, just at 2.25mb/sec, which is unacceptably slow. My sister is coming in 2 weeks to visit me, so I got my dad to buy an 80gb 5400rpm drive from a store home and she's going to bring it along with her.

I'm going to send this whole thing in when I get back. The internal network card died, the memory reader never worked, and now the hard drive... what's next? This whole thing is going in to Averatec as soon as I get home. I've got an xbox w/ 160gb and a USB2.0 20gb drive to use for backing up, which I've already done for the most part. Just a few files left to do. I'm not in the mood for a full backup since I could do with a format/reinstall at the moment anyways, so certain files are enough.

    Cheers,
    Cam
