Since it comes with one, is there any way to control, say, PowerDVD with a remote control via the IR port on the back of the notebook?

    try averatec's site
    http://www.averatec.com/accessories/other_accessories.htm
it looks like there's one, but it says for the 6200 series. It might work for yours, though. Talk to Averatec.

It would be interesting if that would work. Price isn't bad if it does. I'll ask them whats going on with it.

I tried a program called uICE. They have collected drivers from all sorts of devices existing for IR remote control. Since they don't have anything for notebook IR ports I doubt it can be done but I'm still looking. This is still so surprising to me, it seems like the perfect app.

I was just at a conference where I noticed people were controlling their notebooks for slide show presentations in powerpoint. I wasn't thinking to ask anyone about them...

I've also looked into BlueTooth as I have a BlueTooth PCMCIA card, but nothing exists for that either! That is very surprising to me! The only thing going is there is a way to make a SmartPhone work as a remote through BlueTooth.

    Vortex-

As it turns out, I utlize my EDGE wireless phone over a BT connection on a regular basis. What would you like to know? I use a Broadcom BT adapter (usb) with my Nokia 6620. The connection is maintained by software built by the old AT&T Wireless. Works like a charm...in fact i'm using it right now!

So you mean you use your BT phone as a remote control? What software resides on the PC that lets you do this?

    As for rustskulls inquiry...

I got this reply about the 6200 remote for the 6130:
No, it would not work since they are two different models.

That makes me wonder exactly how it does work on the 6200?

After having done a little research on bluetooth phones, it interesting that not only is there some software to make the phone be a remote on some models. But on those phones the phone is actually getting feedback as to what the PC is doing. For instance, you might be able to see the playlist from whatever audio player you are using. I wonder how it works for playing DVD's?

When I ordered the 6130 I got a bluetooth card and BT mouse. So I'd be able to do this if I got the right phone.

Here is the software I saw but I don't know how specialized the software is. That is, if you have, say, a Motorola BT phone will it work in that one? Hard to know...

Something else I found in the responses

    http://www.bluetoothshareware.com/bluetooth_remote_control.asp
"Bluetooth Remote Control is a true universal remote control. It allows the user to modify the current behaviour as well as add support for new applications. You can add support by writing Java or VB scripts, defining key maps and file actions. With key maps the user can very easy and fast define application actions and link them to any buttons on the mobile phone."

I may give that a shot to see if it works on Nokia 6620 phones...after Easter that is!

The 6130HS IR port internal dongle (HP HSDL-1100/HSDL-2100) and Super I/O chip (National Semiconductor PC87393) are **capable** of sending and receiving remote control signals. The problem you'll have is finding someone who has created a driver (for windows or linux) that makes this available to applications.

Under Linux, there is an application called LIRC for using IR ports as sender and receiver of remote control signals - but no device driver. I don't use windows so I can't help with possible applications on that OS.

I have gotten the IR port to work under Linux and have even made ppp network connections between Linux and Win XP. But remote control has escaped me to this point and I don't have the patience or skill to write a device driver for it....

If you have luck let us know....
