6130hs up and running on 2 gig; easy to install; worked like a charm. I bought the pc2700 1 gig chips at mushkin.com. very easy site to order from. It looks like I can edit my digital images now without taking a nap between processes.

Now looking for harddrive that fits in the dvd optics slot. Anyone seen?

And no fear of warrenty reprisals? According to the sticky thread it looks safe to do.

I wanted to bump up to 1G as I have a 512MB 2700 stick laying around. But I found (without opening it) that it seems to have 2 256MB sticks in it now. Sigh, then I guess I can only go to 768.

Its just that I emailed Averatec, trying to clear up the warrenty question in writing. They told me that "on the 6130 I only have to take out two screws to upgrade the memory". Of course as you already know you have to take the whole panel off which is 11 screws. I replied such to Averatec and never heard back.

but when I was reading the pdf file on the 6130hs it said it could only be upgraded to only 1 gig of ram.

yes most of the documentation and adds from dealers state 1 gb.
But in the upgrade secton in the PDF it is ambiguous; it hints you have one slot that will take up to 1 gb memory. It does not say you have two slots, I dont think anyway. I wonder if (hope not)it is a battery life issue. I dont know if I have the same battery life (1 hour 15 min?) as I did before. I have not set any conservative battery parameters tho. But It aint great I tell you and the 7200 HD may have more power demands also.
Good hint about the warranty, I will save the 2 256 chips just in case something happens in the near future.
My old 3120 averatec had the same documentation issue. they claimed only 370 something ram cap but everyone started adding a second 512 instead for 640 total. It only had one usable slot.
Averatec could have been worried about heat too w/ the 1 gb cap? Mine seems cooler.

    nowhereatoll,
how much performance did you get out of installing 2 gigs of memory. Could you load programs really really fast. Could I just take one of the 256 sticks out and just put 1 gig in or do I have to have two of the same kind in?

yes the unit is handling my graphics programs much better (photoshop cs and nikon capture) I am loading in many huge tiff files and the hard drive isnt being accessed at all (hardly). The hard drive now is much cooler of course.
Yes jedisolo; you can put in 1 gig in one slot, it doesnt matter which one. That way you have the option of replacing the other 256 later. I was going to do that too but I thought it was more important to get matching ram, and didnt know if i could get the same brand, type later, so I bit it and went for it.

This is a snip of the message.

You can get to the memory compartment without voiding the warranty. It is one of the compartments on the bottom of the laptop and requires only one or two screws to be removed. This model has two memory slots and supports up to 2GB max.

    Thank You,

the manual definitely states that pc2700 and 2.5 volt is the type. Someone else previously here stated that pc 3200 will work (tho it will operate at 2700 speed). I was pushing it already to 2 gb and didnt want to chance trouble with the higher bandwidth. Someone also stated here that kingmax was fine. The mushkin didnt cost that much more and I thought it was a good idea to get it fresh from the oem, and more likely they would be a matched set.

would having more memory memory keep the overall system cooler because the hard drive wouldn't have to access the files as much?

besides the performance boost the hard drive is accessed less. I think I need to find out how to optimize windows though to utilize it. Good luck on the 1 gig!

I just installed the 1 gig stick of pc2700 ram and know the system is at 1280 mb of ram. The 6130hs seems a bit a cooler now since I've installed it. It only took 5 minutes to install.

If you have more than 1 gig of memory in your notebook, set the virtual memory to 1910mb, you'll notice the difference in performance.

OK Ive got the paging file set now to 2047MB. SO I should set it lower 1910 or is it good as long as it is over 1910? Thanks for the info BTW.

the reason why I set my paging file to 1918 mb was because windows recommened it. If you want a more efficient paging file turn off virtual memory restart windows, defrag your hd a couple of times then turn back on virtual memory and voila your paging file should be more efficient.

This is a trick I learned while messing with the registry to have efficient memmory. If you mess the registry you might ruin windows, just a warning.
    1. These Settings will fine tune your systems memory management -at least 256MB of ram recommended, 512 preferred for first tweak.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Control Session Manager Memory Management

1.DisablePagingExecutive -double click it and in the decimal put a 1 - this allows XP to keep data in memory now instead of paging sections of ram to harddrive.

2.LargeSystemCache- double click it and change the decimal to 1 -this allows XP Kernal to Run in memory improves system performance a lot.

3.Create a new dword and name it IOPageLockLimit - double click it and set the value in hex - 4000 if you have 128MB of ram; or set it to 10000 if you have 256MB; set it to 40000 if you have 512MB of ram, or more -this tweak will speed up your disk cache.

    nowhereatoll,

Seagate makes a 100gig notebook drive that works well in the 6130. I installed one last fall, and haven't looked back. I've also got 1gig of mem.

I've read about the new seagate 100gig and i've heard it's pretty good. Does it come with the 5 year warranty like they do on their desktop drives. I bought a 40 gig toshiba drive back in september and it's been pretty good as well.

At the time of purchase, I didn't pay that much attention to the warranty period. However, upon reviewing Seagate's warranty policy on their website, they make no distinction between enterprise drives and notebook drives - so I'm assuming it's 5-yrs. I have 2 other 160gig Seagate SATA drives on my office system in a RAID 0 configuration that have been humming only for over a year now without incident.

Tonight, I bought my first WD 36gig SATA Raptor drive. I've been wanting one for awhile now and thought the time was right. I just upgraded my office system to an AMD-64, complete with new mobo and a bad-ass Zalman HSF cooler, and will make the Raptor, my primary boot, WinXP Pro and Linux system drive. I'm hoping that as the system drive, the Raptor spinning at 10krpms will add a significant boost to all system/OS functions.

May I install PC3200 memory in my AV6130H1-10?
Test says now memory(PC2700)works with 6/7 rate.
Is OCZ memory good for it?

sorry about the delay. I used pc2700 as that is what the manual states. I heard here that it will accept 3200 but still run at motherboard specs of 2700 so I chose a 2700 matched pair to reduce incompatibility issues. I knew from past experience that Averatec under-rates the ram capability, probably for heat issues or whatever.
