I recently purchased a 6130HS-20, well two actually but that's another story, and have been having wireless problems like many of you. I downloaded the windowsupdate drivers, and the ralink drivers but wasn't happy with the results. It would work for a while, then drop off and be unable to reconnect. I have WEP encryption on my network and wondered if that was the trouble, but disabling it didn't seem to help much. Warm boot, cold boot, neither seemed to matter as well.
Then I did some google work and may have found a fix at the service pack 2 problem solver site: http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm
Try resetting the IP stack (NFI what that means) but it worked for me.
The command is: netsh int ip reset
Hit start, run, then type that in. My wireless connection worked almost immediately.
I'm hoping that it'll keep working, but will write again if I still have problems. Apparently it is a Service Pack 2 prob, and not Averatec or Ralink, which would make sense based on everyone else's observations.

I somehow fixed my connection recently, I won't touch anything (if it ain't broke, dont fix it) but if the problem appears again, I'll try that. Thanks for the hint

I might have to curb my enthusiasm a little. It's back to screwed up. It seems like a lot of time it will connect to my network, but can't get an IP address from the router. When I plug the cable in, it gets an IP address immediately. There must be some setting in there somewhere that will fix this.

Before I bought the 6130, I had a dell and when I installed SP2 it would totally fubar my wireless connection and I found that the only way to get around this is to reformat and install windows and SP2 before I installed anything else on the system. Luckily my old dell came with a windows cd and not a ghost image like most new computers come with nowadays, so I was able to format my 6130 right when it arrived and install windows XP and SP2 without having to use the ghost image supplied with the laptop.
This is just my personal experience and not a solution, but if you do have access to an XP cd then it might be worth a try.

Thanks for the tip. I just switched to static IP for my wireless card instead of DHCP and that seems to be working a lot better. I've only had this computer a week, but all my files are on it now, so a reformat would be a pain. The first one I got from Amazon wasn't packed very well and arrived with a dead screen. This one wasn't packed well either even though I ordered it from someone else. It works great except for the wireless issues, which I attribute to Microsoft more than Ralink or Averatec.

for what it worth...
I have had similar issues...even posted a link to ralink driver download site... but what I found to be helpful in a few test runs is this;
1) install OS from supplied ghost image
2) verify wireless connectivity
3) install SP2 (I use a disc from MS)
4) update ralink driver
5) test wireless conectivity again
My result has been that even though there is a noticable loss in signal strength (good to low typicaly), I am able to stay connected to the 3 different networks i subscribe to.
Hope this is helpful! -
I bought an Averatec 5500 recently and using it wirelessly downstairs with my Netgear 802.11.b router upstairs. I noticed that my connection is always low or very low. If very low, then often I can't connect at all. I tried to change my router to a Netgear 802.11g but the same problem occurred. I have an older laptop with an external wireless USB adapter. I tried using that adapter on my Averatec and invariably my connection is always good to very good. I'm not sure this is indicative of a generic problem with Averatec.
Personally I want to avoid the hassle of always having to put in the USB adapter when I want to surf. I might give these drivers a try, even though from reading this thread it doesn't seem to have worked. Another alternative for me to try is to use an older PCMCIA wireless card and leave it in there permanently. I'll give that a try and see if that improves the connection
