    Hi all,

The hard drive in my 6130HS-20 recently crapped out. I've installed a new Hitachi Travelstar 7k100-80 in it (the ATA-6 version). Now I'm attempting to restore the system with the three CD-Roms that came with the computer. It's teh first time I've had the pleasure of using these. I get about 82% of the way through the install and it craps out. I get a brief blue screen (~1 s). It says error 256 (I think) and instructs me to hit ctrl+Alt+delete if it doesn't recycle. Prior to the blue screen, the CD-Rom starts to make clicking noises as if it is struggling to read. The CD (#2 of3) looks like it should be ok. No big scratches or boogers or anything. However, I was surprised at the level of "usual wear and tear" looking marks that were on disks that I never removed from the sleeve.

So, anyone else have this experience? I've yet to call Averatec because this thing is long out of warranty and I haven't had a spare hour or two to spend on hold. Anyhow, any and all advice would be welcome and appreciated. Thanks.

If you goggle " error code 256 " it is a corrupt boot.ini file. My best guess is must be issue with condition of recovery discs. I just installed a new HDD and the 3 discs pretty much installed themselves. Put in first and computer did the rest so I don't think there is anything you could have done wrong.
I have had a bad new HDD once so that is possible. If you don;t have a way to check follow this link, download and burn this to disc. Have computer boot from this disc and follow prompts. No operating system needed to do this.

Also - spare yourself the agony of doing this. If out of warrenty, Averatec support could NOT care less. Been there, done that, will never buy again

Why deal with the recovery disk. Use your normal OEM version of XP, then enter the key on the back. You may be prompted to call MS, no big deal. Just tell them your HD failed in your NB and they will give you a key to enter. You will need the drives from Averatec site, download and burn a cd with them. This way you want get all of the excess junk installed and your nb will run a lot smoother.
