Does anyone else's media reader not work?
I have tried new PCMCIA drivers, new media reader drivers, new installs of Windows, seemingly everything.
Has anyone else had this happen and gotten it to work? I'd really like mine to work since the external reader I have to have instead is hogging one of my USB ports.
Thanks

I had a problem with my card reader on my 6130, and I somehow got it to work using some Fujitsu drivers. The card reader is a O2Micro OZ711M1 Memory CardBus controller. I did a Google for that device and came across some threads about a fujitsu notebook, P series, P5010D and found that their Win XP drivers are version 1.0.7.4 which is more recent that the drivers on Averatec's site. I downloaded the drivers, rebooted, and inserted my SD card. Windows reported there was no driver for the device installed, I clicked reinstall driver and it found another driver automatically (It didn't do this before) then the SD card was readable.
Don't know if it will work for you, but it seems to have solved my problem. No problems yet. http://www.fujitsupc.com/downloads/PCMCIA_O2MICRO_V1.0.7.4_XP.EXE -
I am sad to report that this didn't fix anything for me. The driver version is newer at 1.0.7.4, but that still doesn't fix the problem. All it does is finds a PCMCIA IDE/ATAPI Controller or something and that's where it stays. No window popped up saying it couldn't initialize some device or another...
Thanks for the suggestion, but I honestly believe it's busted and was from the beginning. I'm not going to think of RMA'ing this thing until I get home in August either, by which time it'll be just about a year since I bought it.
One other little tiny question: I have used my external USB reader to boot from an SD card just to see if I could, and it worked. Can the internal reader be accessed at boot time for this purpose as well or not?
Thanks,
Cam

It is possible to boot from an USB device with the 6130, my guess is that the media reader would work the same way, I remember that in the bios, USB media could be booted with the "boot from other devices" option, which would include the media reader as well (I guess)

odd...
My readre was fine months ago, and now (i tested it just for this post) and the damn thing dosent recognise the card i have. it does "ding" at me when inserted, but nothing in win exp!?! So, looks I have a project for the weekend...great!
whipeout- it is possible to boot from USB, you have the option correct...but I have not ever heard of that ability of the MR. If i get it workin, i'll give it a test

So I checked the system manager and found that ATA/ATAPI controller eas erroring out. So I tried to reinstall the driver provided on the 3rd Averatec disc...still nothing! It errors out when updating the driver...grrrr!<hr height='1' noshade id='quote'></font id='quote'></blockquote id='quote'>
I just had a nose thru the system manager (assuming Windows XP) and couldn't find anything related to the PCMCIA/ATAPI IDE device. Where exactly are you looking?
Thanks,

Ahh ok Device Manager...
I've seen that, but there's no new disk drive that appears under any heading, there's no device without a driver, there's nothing Windows can't initialize for whatever reason... nothing except the PCMCIA/ATAPI IDE Controller gets found when I stick my card in. I've tried a Sandisk 256mb SD, Sandisk 128mb SD, HP 16mb SD, Toshiba 16mb SD, all give the same result... nothing.
I've also tried redoing the driver for the PCMCIA/ATAPI IDE Controller, no dice... tried redoing the Cardbus Accelerator thing as well, still nothing.
The more stuff I try, the more I get to thinking that it's just a defective part and I'm pissed off that I hadn't caught it sooner. At least I had enough sense to bring my USB SD reader along with me.

If I can get my hands on one, I'll definitely give it a try, but I don't know anyone with any of those format of cards.
Thanks for the suggestion though.

Clean your Averatec 6100! http://www.ubercam.ca/Clean6100.pdf -
If you can, why don't you give a mmc or a memory stick a try, i've had my laptop since last sept, and mine works fine (Using a MS, Not SD). It could just be having a problem accessing SD type.

This just happened to me as well. I've been using the cardreader for about 2 months with SD Memory stick.
Today I got my new SanDisk Ultra II 1.0 GB memory chip. Put it in. Nothing. I know that area of the Averatec 6130 gets pretty warm so immediately I thought hardware failure. The chip worked find in the camera and another card reader.
So before panicking I decided to reinstall the PCMCIA Driver 1.0.6.0. The instant it was installed, XP saw a new device. No problems since and it can read the SanDisk Ultra II without incident. Still, I'm thinking it had something to do with it. Its the only thing that changed. -
The thing is mine has never worked. I've tried every version of the drivers that I could find. It never worked with SD, never has, and unfortunately likely never will! I'm frustrated with it and I give up, good thing I have my external SD reader.

ubercam,
Sounds like a warranty item, but probably to much trouble to risk sending back your 6130 for repair. The easiest route as you suggested is an external media reader. Mine has worked fine from day one. I made sure I tested a couple days after buying my 6130.
redjr... -
Hindsight is always 20/20... I did actually test it a couple days after buying it, but I had just installed Windows over again and figured I hadn't gotten the driver's sorted out properly, and I thought I'd just sort it out later.
I'm not sending it in to Averatec, they'll probably void my warranty because I've changed the thermal compound on the CPU, even though it enhances the laptop's performance, but that's getting off-topic.
Anyways, thanks for the suggestions, but I've come to the conclusion that there's nothing I can do about it, and I've got the next best thing, an external reader.
Thanks,
