well, after one year of ownership, my averatec 6130HS seemed to possibly develop my first major problem outside of the cracked screen.

I was using a corded mouse with my laptop (was working fine), battery was just a bout dead, so hibernated, changed batts, turned back on, and, now my usb ports don't work!
Restarting doesn't seem to help. Before now it has been working fine. I guess i did have one port that was picky and didn't always like everything, but this is annoying, as i cannot use any usb devices.

    Any suggestions???!

Have you tried leaving the battery out and just running off of AC power? You could try and do a clean install of Windows XP Professional but make sure you back up all your important data.

Well, after a few restarts, and a couple failed starts (froze on login), my usb ports have started working again. I have recently gotten ahold of pro and will be putting it on soon, so hopefully it was maybe just a freak driver issue and not a motherboard problem.

edit: 10 minutes later, my ports are screwing up again. Was just doing some simple programming for a class, and now the mouse wont work anymore. The tracking led in it just blinks rapidly. Sometimes unplugging it and plugging it back in will get it to work, but not always.

well, now i have recieved my first BSOD since i upgraded from win 95. Was still using VS.net 2003 pro, and was trying to run my program when i got the bsod, i just got a glimpse of it as i was hitting keys, so it restarted on me. Windows reports it as a driver failure, which i guess would be related to the usb problems. Anyone else have any ideas? the most recent thing i have installed is VS.net 2003 pro.

I'm thinking mabye you have to recalibrate your battery. Do you have a 4 port powered USB hub laying around plug that into the back USB port and plug the AC adapter into the the Hub, then plug your mouse into the hub and see if anything happens. It could be your USB ports aren't getting enough power. Have you checked the device manager to see if the USB ports are functioning properly?

How do you recalibrate the battery on the 6100 series other then drainging to zero through use? which i do quite often as i need every bit of power i can get.

Device manager reports all is fine. The only time somthing pops up as bad is when i plug in my mouse and it says unknown device (or the something liket that).

I don't really see how the mouse which needs 100mA of power could be overloading a 500mA port; and no, i don't have a powered hub to try. I also tried my powered external HD. When i plug that in, i get nothing from windows related to it.

Right away i guess i will try putting pro on. I hope its just some driver issue or something. But the weird part is it just happend, like windows ate something it shouldn't have.
Heres to hopeing that Pro will solve the problem.

You know maybe it is a driver issue well anyway good luck. Sorry that I wasn't more helpful.

Something else to add to the mystery, i have tried installing the usb drivers over what was there twice, no dice. And while my mouse was blinking and not working, i looked in device manager, and it doesn't report any problems.

well, i think i have narrowed it down to pretty much the motherboard. I come to this conclusion from the fact that after a system restore with the restore discs, my USB still doesn't want to work right and still fails on me. My mouse would work for a bit, then stop working and would just start blinking rapidly. and i am pretty sure the mouse is fine as i was using it on my other computer for a while with no problems.

**** that sucks. Are you going to have the Techs at future shop order you a new one? Are your other USB ports failing as well?

Yeah, all my ports are bad now (usb). Before i did have one port that was touchy and only liked certain devices. But know they will only work for a few minutes after bootup.

Yeah, i am going in to futureshop with it tomorrow and will see what will be done. As really, i have a bad screen (bunch of dead pixels, most REALLY hard to find tho), cracked screen backing, and now the usb ports. So I do have alot to get fixed now. Also i have reformatted this thing way too many times. After a few months it would really start to bog down on me and perform badly. I've done it at least six times in the last 10 months.

So i am hoping that best case secnario is that they will replace it with something new and better (with much haggling of course). Or at least to get it fixed and to not be without it for too long as i need it for university.

Usually you only need to do a complete install of the OS twice a year once every 6 months. The only time I had to reinstall my OS is when I switched from XP home to PRO and that was a week after I bought the notebook (about a year ago) mind you I'm running Spy bot search and destroy in the back ground as well as MS anti spyware tool. I use Firefox to browse the web and thunderbird as an e-mail client and I use a registry fixer everytime the computer boots up to check the registry. All I can say is good luck RadcomTxx.

Hi radcom. I had a similar problem and thought I'd add it here in case there's any relationship. when using my usb drive i sometimes have a problem because it is attached to my key chain. The weight of the whole mess pulls downward and causes me to lose connection. I have to support it and then it will work. I am thinking for your case it could just be a bad connection in the port itself and maybe that could be repaired without replacing the motherboard. Try wedging it into one position or another and see if there is any effect. Rex.

I don't think that this is the problem. As after a short time of using my computer, ALL USB ports will fail. And no USB device will work.
With my mouse, when i disconnect and reconnect, it would just blink rapidly and windows would say connection error(or something like that) and when it fails, device manager reports no problems.
With my external HD, windows just didn't see it at all.
and both devices work fine on my desktop

    Hey Rad,
I have the exact same problem as you. After about twenty mins, or when my laptop heats up my usb ports would crap out. If i pull out the usb device (ie mouse) and plug it back in, the light at teh bottom of teh mouse would blink rapidly and it would say unrecognized device or something like it. I brought it in to staples since it was still under warranty, and they checked it and they think that when the laptop heats up, the motherboard expands and maybe the circuit is cracked somewhere so its a broken circuit. Since its under warranty, they're gonna replace the motherboard, and put new thermo compound in it. I get it back this week, so i'll keep u posted.

Hey had my laptop back for a few days now and decided to update u guys. They didnt replace the motherboard but first tried changing thermo compound and cleaning out the exhaust area. They said the heat from the processor was screwing up sensors around the area. I've been using it for a couple of days now and no real issues with the USB. They used OCZ(the silver one, i forgot the name) thermal compound BTW.

hmm, i wonder what futureshop will find wrong and what they will do. I gave them a large list of about 11 things that have happened to me at one time or another.

The thing that sucks tho, is that he said that it will prolly be 2-3 weeks before i get it back which really sucks. I have began thinking of selling it and getting an ibook. How much do you think i could get for the 6130HS with 3 batteries in total? (in canadian funds please!)
