As of yesterday my 6130 HS will not read any disc media. "My Computer" shows the drive as available, but it will not read any media.
I have tried blank CD-R, DVD-R, burned CD-R & DVD-R, original CDs, data CDs and orginal DVDs.....nothing registers.
I have uninstalled and re-installed through the Device Manager, and have restarted more times than I can count.
Averatec support could only suggest the un-install (which I had already done) and second option to re-format. Although a PIA, I would have no problems doing that....except that the computer will not recoginze the recovery discs to do the re-format!
Any other options before I return my laptop again for the THIRD time in two months for faulty hardware?
I'm half-tempted to simply go buy a replacement drive and do it myself so I don't have to deal with returning it again.

I would say that the drive is dead. If it's under warranty, ask if you can send only the drive back, and keep the computer (if you need it)
I don't think it is possible to buy a cdrom drive yourself, it is not easy to change .. -
Frontier,
How long did you have it for? I hate to suggest it but I think if there is an option to return it ,that I would. I bought one Thursady but something told me that there would be a problem with the DVD drive and returned it Friday. The two in the store looked like they would fall off in a second and flimsy all around. Everything else I loved and thought was built well for the money. I also wanted an extra notebook for backup and thought it would be a refreshing change from dealing with Dell and all the extra bloatware,etc...
I would consider after two months asking them for a new exchange but I think if they did it,you might end up with a refurbished one anyway.
I don't know anything about changing the drive but from looking at it ,I think I might even be able to do it. That might be the way to go and possibly sell it since you've had such a bad experience.
Are you going to call them again and see what they say? I would assume you want a working DVD drive!
I wondered how long you've had it but you didn't answer. I wondered how long the warranty is too. I'd like to know out of curiousity and for future reference if you'll tell me. I was disappointed returning the next day but like I said it was only because of the DVD drive being flimsy. I thought it would be trouble in the future. I saw them in the store but I thought people play with them, they are display models and try it for myself.

That sucks! I would have given up on the thing by now. It seems the only real options is to return the damn thing again or to replace the drive.
I upgraded my dvd drive a few months ago to the NEC ND-6500A and it's been working great so far. The drive cost me a little over 100 bucks at newegg.com and it only took me about 5 mins to replace the old drive.
But it's up to you Frontier, The drive is really simple to replace so dont worry about that. Just figure out if it's worth the 100 bucks not to go through averatecs return process again. -
Well the drive itself is a piece of cake to remove. I've already pulled it out once (no screws, just a locking mechanism) to see if that would help, but no to avail.
I just wanted to check and see if anyone had any suggestions, but now I'm going to request that they let me send the drive back to them first, instead of my whole laptop.
What I would like to do is buy the cheapest drive I can (burner or not), then test it and see it if works. If a different one does, then I think they should definately let me just send this drive back, and not the whole notebook.
Thanks for the replies. I'll keep the post updated....
Oh, and I've had it since last Sept, from Sam's Club. I am going tomorrow to talk to a manager with my whole story (two previous returns for the same problem, returned to me damaged, and now this) and see if they will give me my money back. I'm not counting on it, but this is really getting ridiculous. -

Well of course corporate policy is I can't return parts, only the whole laptop. And, since this problem is unrelated to the last problem, I have to pay to have it shipped back.
The customer service that this company offers is horrible. As soon as I get it back, the hd is getting wiped clean and it goes up for sale. Won't even turn it on, because I gaurantee that something else will break. Not even worth it, I'll take a $500 hit not to have to deal with this company ever again. -
Finally got it back yesterday.
They just swapped my HD into a re-furbished unit. I can tell because 1) The S/N is different and 2) this one has cracks and scratches in it that mine didn't.
That's what sucks. Their equipment fails, even after I take care of it. But to save money, they send me a re-furbished unit, so I have to get the consequences of someone else that didn't take care of thier computer. Great CS huh?
Anyone want to buy a 6130HS-20? -
The dvd drive in my 6130-20 is a flaky discountinued lite-on 431s that reads sparingly and burns slower than a snail with matches. Replaced it with a nice slot loading pioneer and all my problems went away with reading/ writing performance. Just replace the crappy drive with a new one.

MarcusJ, what model pioneer did you get? Is it an Internal that actually fits in the 6130 internal connector? I've had trouble finding a suitable replacement.. -
Hi guys(gals). I too am having troubles with my lite-on combo drive. I plan on just replacing it myself, but I have a question. In most ads for drives, they are shown having flat fronts instead of sloped, like the side of the Averatec. Can that be swapped over? If not, does it look ok? Rex.
