I have had my 6130HS-20 for over 3 months. I was running WinXP Pro SP1, with 1GB of Ram. All my USB devices were working fine up until 2 weeks ago. Then they all suddenly stopped working and whenever I plug them in, I get a balloon popping up from my task bar with the message "USB Device not recognized. One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Window does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message." The devices work fine, as I can use them in other computers. When this first started happening, I was able to get them to work for a while by rebooting then after 20 minutes or so, they would stop working again. Now they don't work at all. The USB drivers load during boot up, and when I plug my optical mouse in, the light comes on, so it is getting power. I upgraded to SP2, hoping that might help, but nothing changed. I downloaded all the latest USB drivers from Averatec and Microsoft, and tried all the fixes posted on the forums, but to no avail. I sent Averatec Support an email outlining my problem, but they haven't responded. Has anyone else had the same problem and managed to fix it? Any help to get them working again would be greatly appreciated.

I'd run the restore, after backing up your data. If it still doesn't work, it may be a physical problem that needs an RMA.

    bubba,

I used to loose my USB ports after shutting down, or a standby. But, that was before I wiped my drive and did a clean install of Win XP. Now everything works great. However, on occasion I will get the ballon that says one of my USB devices is not functioning. Usually, it my small powered hub I use that's the culprit. I just have to remove the power and plug it back in. Then Windows recognizes it again. Go figure.

My history with USB 1.1 and 2.0 is clouded with non-working and malfunctioning USB devices! You'd think the designers would have all the kinks worked out by now, but I don't think that's the case. Sometimes I think it's malware from the internet that causes many of my problems - with all my computers.

You already tried what I was going to suggest. Good luck.

Thanks for the help symbiont and redjr.

I will try the restore and see if that helps, and check again for malware, which may have been missed on earlier scans. If that doesn't work, then I may just replace the original 60 gig HDD that came installed in the computer with an 80 gig 5400 rpm HDD, and do a clean install with Win 2K instead of XP, to see if it will last longer. Then I can use the 60 gig as an external storage HDD. I haven't had this problem with my other laptops, one running WinXP Pro, the other Win 98SE. Neither of them are Averatecs. So I don't know if it is a WinXP software problem, an Averatec hardware problem, or a combination WinXP/Averatec problem.

I've had my 6130 for about a month. I just started having the same problems. I called customer service and they suggested that I use an XP feature where I could change the configuration to a previous known working date. That didn't work!!! They said the next step is to back up the drive and use the restore disk. If that doesn't work, it goes back to them.

It sure seems like a hardware problem to me. All of the USB ports quit at the same time. I turned it off for about 12 hours and the ports were usable for a short time. then they stopped working again.

Any more suggestions? I sure hate to have to send it in and wait for weeks to get it back.

Did this include the port in the back? All mine are working fine, and I've been using this laptop since around July.

Yep. All 3 of the USB ports are now non-functioning.
